Napoleon, who in many articles we often find as a person who admires the Koran, actually used Islamic sentiment as his political tool to win the hearts of Muslims. In the edict that he disseminated to the people of Egypt, he opened it with the sentence of the creed that bore,

"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, there is no god but Allah, He does not have children and He does not have partners in His power" (bismillaah al-rahmaan al-rahiim, laa ilaaha illaa Allaah, laa walida lahu wa laa shariika lahu fii mulkihi).

Napoleon then continued, that he and his troops came from the French nation (millah al-Faransaawiyyah) whose country was upheld on the principles of freedom (al-hurriyyah) and equality (al-taswiyyah). Their goal in coming to Egypt was to liberate this strategically located, great civilized country from "Mamluk tyranny and greed" (al-zulm wa al-tama' min al-Mamalik).

The commander who has a track record of extraordinary victories then asked the respected figures in Egypt to tell the Egyptians that in fact the French nation is also a Muslim nation (quuluu li ummatikum inna al-Faransaawiyyah hum aydan muslimuuna mukhlishuun), in which they has “destroyed the throne of the Pope who has always incited Christians to fight against Islam” (kharibuu Kursiyy al-Baabaa al-ladzii kaana daa'iman yahusshuu al-Nashaaraa 'alaa muhaarabah al-Islaam).

That is part of the contents of Napoleon Bonaparte's edict to the people of Egypt. From some of the contents of the edict, we can see the values of the French Revolution that Napoleon tried to instill in the people of Egypt. It is Liberté, égalité, fraternité which is defined as freedom, justice and brotherhood.

Muhammad 'Ali was a person who systematically westernized the lives of the Egyptian population. He was so amazed by the advanced European civilization thanks to industrial excellence and revolutionary thinking. He also forged close ties with Egyptian intellectuals who used to study at Napoleon's Institut d'Égypte.

One of them was an al-Azhar scholar named Hasan al-'Attar (1766-1835). In al-'Attar's view, the land of Egypt must change its conditions and the knowledge in it must also change and be replaced with something new. The change he meant was a total change in European culture after the scholars and sheikhs – in his view – failed to continue the strenuous efforts of Muslims in the past.

The story of the impact of Western thought on Muslims, of course, does not end here. However, the gap between Napoleon's first arrival in Egypt and the collapse of the Caliphate, spanned more than 1 century.

Quote
“In every country we enter, we dig the ground to dismantle pre-Islamic civilizations.

Our goal is not to return Muslims to the pre-Islamic beliefs, but enough for us to make them vacillate between choosing Islam or those old civilizations.”

Theodore Cuyler Young, Near Eastern: Culture and Society

Nativization, which is defined as "a movement to minimize the role of Islam in a nation by awakening the glorious pre-Islamic culture or history and cunningly portraying Islam as something foreign and destroying old culture", was used by the colonialists as an effective way of reducing resistance. as well as destroying the people's faith in Islam itself. In Egypt, Napoleon Bonaparte unearthed the remains of the glory of the Pharaohs (ancient Egypt) and popularized them back to society.

This is the pattern that occurs when orientalists enter Islamic lands, namely carrying out various covert archaeological activities.

This was even noted by Sultan Abdul Hamid II, the greatest Ottoman sultan before his downfall. In his diary, the sultan said that many archaeologists from Germany, England and France had asked the caliph for permission to enter Iraq, Syria and various Islamic areas to conduct various archaeological research.

Sultan Abdul Hamid, who had read this political movement, of course did not grant this permission. However, there were also many archaeologists who managed to secretly infiltrate the Caliphate. The famous ones are Wilfrid Scawen Blunt who travels around Syria, Egypt and Najd and Lawrence of Arabia who has many activities in Riyadh, Syam and Iraq.

As intelligent beings, human awakening depends on thought. Thoughts on what? About life, the universe, humans, and the relationship between these three things and something that existed before those three things existed.

So, people have to think. Before there was life, the universe, and before the existence of humans, what was there? Then after life, the universe, and humans are over, where will they go? What will happen?

If humans can think about the essence of these 3 aspects, then humans will rise.

What people think about then is, not only worldly aspects. But also preparing for something that will happen after he (human) is gone. The language of Islam is the hereafter. Ukhrowi. The essence of all of this, is about thinking. Thought is a keyword.

So, what are the comments of other Muslim thinkers?

This time from Prof. Syed Naqib al-Attas. He was originally born in Bogor, then moved to Kuala Lumpur and founded ISTAC (International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization), an extraordinary campus. In his book entitled, "Islam in Malay History and Culture", he stated,

History has taught that the more beautiful and complicated the art style, the more it indicates the decline of mind and reason; The Greek Acropolis, Iran's Persepolis, and the Egyptian Pyramids, do not shine a light on reason and reason.

In assessing the role and impression of Islam, the characteristics that must be looked for by them are not in monuments and temples, (or) in sculptures and wayang - characteristics that are easy for the physical eye to see. However, in language and writing that actually shows intellect and reason encapsulates thought.

That's the reason on my difficulties on working with Islamic movements, they still have a bit western mindset which emphasize intellectuality and empiricism rather following Mohammed mindset which emphasize the "ghaib", or something which the answer can be searched through thinking and seeing the patterns without seeing directly with experience. Even Mohammed can made powerful rational teachings without much writings and empirical theory. That's only obstacles when I work with the Islamist alongside the workers's union.

And that sentences which quoted can be resulting this meaning, if the reason led to empathy and simplicity, then it will be accepted to the Islamic thought. Islam consider empathic feelings as an intellectual. But western thoughts see the feelings and empathy is irrational, like what are said by British liberal philosoper David Hume.
