Yes, it looks like the actor's lower jaw in the 1987 version is quite wide, but he has good eye area. Perhaps that was the best they could find. I definitely agree that the 1997 version is better. However, I did not know it existed, as the 1987 version was the most famous, setting off the Ayodhya protests and Hindu nationalism.
