After centuries of Western imposition of Western norms onto "non-white" characters whether non-Western audiences like it or not, finally we get the reverse: non-Western norms imposed onto "white" characters regardless of whether Western audiences like it or not! Well done Capcom!
I'm still not going to be playing SF6, though. They have to go back to 2D for me to ever play another SF game. For now I'd rather keep watching Western brains melt:

It was a classic trope in Counterculture-era live-action dramas too:

This the point: it is a form of assurance that neither person is vacancy-filling, unlike in scenarios where either person takes initiative to begin a relationship from nothing upon which the subconscious motivation for the initiative is doomed to forever remain suspect. Non-vacancy-filling is a prerequisite for genuine romance. Which is not to say it has to be relatives. Neighbours or meeting via school/work or chance encounters in general are fine too.

What makes this whole situation even more bizarre is that the Japanese press were absolutely baffled by the Western reaction to all of this. So several

But here is the thing, the western audience does not approach the cousin question purely through a legal lens. In the UK, in the

The fact that the general Japanese reaction can be boiled down to "What's the big deal?" clearly indicates that this is a classic case of culture clash.

It's a reminder of how normal the Japanese writers think this situation is

Actually, most east Asians doesn’t find this as a problem and consider it a really good story writing way, it is a cultural thing alright

What happened to "love is love"?

Westerners are just crying because they're Westerners, different cultures take this marriage as a normal thing.

If they find it fine in Japan then maybe they should have used or made one of the Japanese members of the roster have this storyline rather than choosing an American character considering most of us find that stuff disgusting.

Alex is an American character that was made to cater to the American audience. Yet the writer clearly doesn't know a single thing about America's marriage structures and taboos. That writer needs to be fired or removed. They weren't up to the task and are woefully inadequate for the job.

Honestly getting really sick of the "Step-sister" trope in anime.
It was a classic trope in Counterculture-era live-action dramas too:

The Second Cousin thing is gross too, but SO many shows just treat 'growing up with someone as the opposite gender' as a fast track to romance.
