Killer fungus becoming more infectious and spreading worldwide
Quote
Study says fungus uses proactive ways to evade drugs and human immune response
Quote
A drug-resistant variety of the common fungus Candida auris is gaining virulence and spreading across the globe, scientists warn in a new review.

Fungal infections, which affect nearly 6.5 million people each year, are associated with a high mortality rate of over 50 per cent even with antifungal therapy.

Candida auris is a type of invasive yeast that can cause deadly infections, especially in people with weakened immune systems.

It was first discovered in 2009 in the ear canal of a patient in Japan and soon spread to many countries, including India, where it was identified as a major public health threat in 2014.

The latest research review reveals several unique traits of the fungus that enable it to spread rapidly. Candida auris is already found in at least 61 countries on six continents.

The study notes that the fungus is rapidly becoming resistant to drugs due to its ability to switch from a yeast-like growth form to a filament-driven spread. It also has cell wall proteins that enable it to stick to human skin “like glue” and colonise it.

“Skin colonisation by C auris is a significant medical concern because colonised patients may facilitate inter- and intra-hospital transmission of C auris to other patients,” the study, published in the Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews, points out.

The fungus is equipped with “efflux pumps” on its cell membrane that can remove antifungal drugs before they can kill it. It also sticks together to form slimy biofilm layers on surfaces making it hard for drugs to penetrate.

It’s unclear if there are any other means by which the fungus resists drugs, the study says. “The diagnosis of C auris infections is often hampered by misidentification, leading to delays in starting appropriate antifungal therapy,” the review explains.

“Taken together, these data underscore the need to develop novel antifungal agents with broad-spectrum activity against human fungal pathogens, to improve diagnostic tests, and to develop immune- and vaccine-based adjunct modalities for the treatment of high-risk patients.”

The review calls for improved efforts to raise awareness about the fungal disease via better surveillance mechanisms, especially in resource-poor countries. It notes that three new drugs that are currently in clinical trials could likely become available for treatment of this fungal infection soon.

Super fungus spread world wide
Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus, is spreading worldwide, posing a significant public health threat. It was first discovered in Japan in 2009 and has since become a major public health concern in India and the United States. The fungus is resistant to multiple antifungal drugs and can cause severe infections, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems. It has been found in at least 61 countries across six continents, and its spread is attributed to factors such as climate change and its ability to colonize human skin. The CDC reports over 7,000 infections across 27 US states, and the World Health Organization has designated it as a "critical priority fungal pathogen."

David Muir fans 'sending prayers' as he halts ABC show to report on 'horror site'
Quote
David Muir fans have been "sending prayers" after the ABC journalist dramatically halted his show to report on the "horror site" of the Washington State floods.

Earlier this week, the state of Washington was plunged into chaos after a flooding disaster. A National Water Prediction Service (NWPS) revealed flood risk across Washington state as days of heavy rain hit the state, leading up to the threat of record-breaking, deadly flooding in some areas.

Muir reported on the news as he hosted ABC's World News Tonight on Thursday, December 11. "We do begin tonight here with a state of emergency in Washington State. Look at the pictures coming in, catastrophic flooding, up to 100,000 people have been told to be on alert to evacuate on a moment's notice," Muir reported. It comes as fervent Trump supporter Kristi Noem's appearance before plastic surgery is revealed in throwback photos.

• CNN's Kaitlan Collins corrects Trump in brutal takedown after his 'stupid and nasty' comments

"Raging waters, entire neighborhoods under water tonight," Muir continued. He said hundreds of National Guard members have now been activated, with helicopters making water rescues.

The 52-year-old then handed over to ABC correspondent Trevor Ault, who was in Washington to report on the flooding. He said rivers have been "raging out of their banks" as the flooding continues, with more than a foot of rain already.

A clip of the report was shared on Instagram with the caption, "Washington state is under a state of emergency after days of torrential rain caused rivers rise to historic levels, raging out of their banks. With several water rescues already underway, over 100,000 Americans face flood evacuations."

Fans headed to Instagram to send their well wishes after the natural disaster that has swept Washington State. Fans aired their concerns underneath ABC's post.

One fan wrote, "Prayers for those in Washington floods," as another said, "Thank you for all your prayers!!! they opened the dams so the dams won’t get any damage or break but it’s causing flooding in other areas. "

"I am here in Seattle and it’s a horror site! Please pray for us !!" a third person begged. Someone else urged those affected to, "Evacuate, be safe."

Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson called the situation "extremely serious" on Wednesday. "The next few days are critical," he said. Flooding has hit at least eight rivers and creeks in the western parts of the state, as per the National Weather Service, with some expected to break flooding records.

Water could rise by over six feet in some locations, causing deadly conditions for thousands of people. Some of the worst hit areas include the Skagit River at Mount Vernon, which they estimated that by Friday, the river could break its record flood level of 37.4 feet by more than two feet.

By late Thursday morning, Skagit River at Concrete, Washington's river was expected to break its record level of 42.2 feet as it's already more than six feet above the major flooding stage.

Ethiopian volcano erupts for first time in 12,000 years, sending ash cloud to Delhi | DW News
Quote
Ethiopia's Hayli Gubbi volcano has erupted for the first time in recorded history. It's thought to be nearly 12,000 years since it last erupted. The eruption covered nearby villages in volcanic dust and sent a cloud of ash cloud drifting across the Red Sea. Plumes have already reached Yemen, Oman, northern Pakistan, and India, where they caused flights to be cancelled. No casualties have been recorded, but officials say the livelihoods of livestock owners could be affected as the ash may reduce available grazing areas.

COP30 talks end without roadmap for fossil fuel phase-out | DW News
Quote
The COP30 climate talks in Brazil have wrapped up, with delegates reaching a modest agreement in addressing climate change challenges.
Nearly 200 countries approved the deal, which includes steps to triple financing for developing countries to cope with extreme weather. But the main COP30 document left out any details about phasing out fossil fuels, that dozens of nations were demanding. The United States was notably absent from the two-week summit, which also saw protests and large street marches.

Is a category 6 hurricane possible?

Yes, a Category 6 hurricane is possible. Research suggests that with the current climate patterns and rising sea temperatures, storms could potentially reach wind speeds of 192 mph and above. However, as of now, the Saffir-Simpson scale has five levels, and while a Category 6 storm is theoretically possible, it is not expected to be a common occurrence in the near future. The scale is designed to capture the most extreme storms, and the current scale already includes the highest levels of hurricane intensity.
