A Canadian news source reports that a Chinese warship came within 150 yards of colliding with an American destroyer in the Taiwan Strait during a joint U.S.-Canada exercise.

(3 Jun 2023) US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin vowed on Saturday that Washington would not stand for any “coercion and bullying” of its allies and partners by China, while assuring Beijing that the United States remains committed to maintaining the status quo on Taiwan and would prefer dialogue over conflict.

Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu has said that Beijing seeks dialogue over confrontation with the United States, warning that any conflict between the two nations would bring “unbearable disaster for the world”.

Speaking at Asia’s top security summit, the Shangri-La Dialogue, on Sunday, Li said the world was big enough for China and the US to grow together.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has said that it is "unfortunate" that his Chinese counterpart has declined to meet him at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore this week. Mr Austin said both countries need to communicate to prevent dangerous encounters between military aircraft. His comments come as he met with top Japanese officials in Tokyo, where he pledged to bolster both nations' deterrence capabilities.

I think if China is given "permission" by the West and Western allies to manage The Far East and "help" Russia collapse in exchange for letting the West manage the Western territories of Russia (after it collapses), such a deal could benefit everyone

With a weakened Russia, then China can expand itself out in the 'Stans' and rebuild the ancient Chinese sphere of influence they once had.

Japan and China have used a new military hotline for the first time. Years of negotiation culminated in a 20 minute phone call between the Japanese Defence Minister  and his Chinese counterpart.

A similar hotline has been in place between the Pentagon and the Chinese defense ministry since 2008. But that hasn't always worked.

Washington says Beijing refused to pick up the phone after shooting down a suspected Chinese spy balloon off the US coast in February. The presence of the spy balloon also led US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to postpone a visit to China

But both sides have moved to improve what is an alarming lack of communication, especially given the growing tensions over Taiwan. President Joe Biden's National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met with China's top diplomat Wang Yi last week.

As anti-anti-China activists complain that policies advanced by Joe Biden inflate the Chinese threat, the administration is starting to concede their premises. The State Department hosted a panel discussion in October exploring “possible links between U.S. foreign policy and anti-Asian” sentiment. Although U.S. officials stopped short of endorsing the claim that hawkish China policy causes racism, Representative Judy Chu (D., Calif.) urged them “to refrain from rhetoric that singles out China alone as a threat,” and a panelist from the Southern Poverty Law Center endorsed the work of Stop AAPI Hate. In the coming weeks, the Department of Homeland Security will host a similar panel in conjunction with the Asian American Foundation, a new outfit co-founded by Joseph Tsai, the Alibaba executive who has defended Beijing’s squelching of the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement.

Perhaps some agreement between China and the United States could be made that if China refrains from visits to Russia we could refrain from visits to Taiwan

The only country with a large enough population to take Russia is China.

What is better than retaking Siberia and harvesting its’ resources? Owning the people that harvest those resources and then sell you those resources at below harvesting cost.

China and India are milking Russia for all it is worth. In some near future China might try a land purchase in Siberia. You know how France and Russia had to sell territory to the US in the 19th century to keep fighting elsewhere. I am sure China is putting together an offer for water and oil rich areas in Siberia. An offer that Russia cannot refuse.

Republican lawmakers are tearing into U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm after she held up China as a model for the United States to emulate on climate change.

At the annual SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, on Friday, Granholm praised China's efforts to tackle climate change, saying the communist country "has been very sensitive, and has actually invested a lot in their solutions, to achieve their goals."

"We're hopeful that, you know, we can all learn from what China is doing," Granholm said.

Her comments drew a heated response from GOP House members, who accused her of "siding with China against American energy producers."
