Canadians uninterested in King Charles’ coronation, British monarchy, survey suggests

King Charles III took centre stage for his first Commonwealth Day as monarch, with this year's theme being "forging a sustainable and peaceful common future". As Crystal Goomansingh reports, while diversity and culture played a prominent role in the annual service, critics say the realities of the Commonwealth's colonial history can't be ignored.

New polling results suggest Canadians are largely indifferent to King Charles, and more than half believe his May 6 coronation is the right time for the country to reconsider its ties with the monarchy.


Only 12 per cent of respondents said it was good news that Charles is now King, compared to 14 per cent who said it was bad news and 67 per cent who were indifferent.

Only 13 per cent of those surveyed said they felt a personal attachment to the monarchy, compared with 81 per cent who didn’t.

Well, I don't think Wilson is a "libertarian", nor is Harry for that matter, so I'm not sure what your point is?

I also do not see Wilson being anti-British monarchy because it was a colonial empire? I doubt Wilson, as many other British people, see the British monarchy as a world oppressor...

It's reported the mother and her cub were being kept in tiny cages - branded "crush cages" due to their size and how they stop the creatures from moving about.

Hearing her cub in distress as a worker went to puncture its stomach, the mother reportedly broke free from her cage.

She then rushed over and hugged the cub until she strangled it to death, before running at a wall head-first to kill herself...

I saw all this going on in hundreds of cases. At first, I was disgusted or outraged. I later came to realize the tragedy of this suffering and to understand its deeper causes. The King danced with Anne Frank’s step-sister and praised the “wonderful” work of a Jewish charity during a visit on Friday.

He toured the JW3 Community Centre in Finchley Road, north London, to learn about its work as the Jewish community prepares to start celebrating Chanukah this weekend.

The King was greeted by Roxane Zand, the Deputy Lieutenant for Camden, and was shown various activities in the centre by Raymond Simonson, its chief executive.

“It’s extra special for a King to take time and come to the Jewish community and speak to everyone and shake hands with everyone, it’s amazing really. I won’t forget this until the day I die, an experience like that, to be kissed by the King.”

From 1907 to 1908, Adolf Friedrich led a scientific research expedition in the region of the Central African Graben and traversed Africa from east to west. In 1908, he was awarded the Eduard Vogel Medal of the Association of Geography of Leipzig. The insects from his expeditions and residence in Togo are in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin and in the Senckenberg Museum

From 1910 to 1911, he led an expedition to Lake Chad and the northern rivers of the Congo to the Nile in current Sudan. Adolf Friedrich and his companions explored the then little-known primeval forest region of the Congo tributaries and the basin of Lake Chad. Individual groups extended their explorations to the Bahr el Ghazal near the upper Nile, while others travelled to south Cameroon and the islands of the Gulf of Guinea. Vom Kongo zum Niger und Nil ("From the Congo to the Niger and the Nile"), a two-volume work based on the 1910–1911 expeditions, has an excellent reputation today for its detail and images.

From 1912 to 1914, Adolf Friedrich was the last governor of Togoland in German West Africa; he was invited for the official celebration of the independence of Togo in 1960. After World War I, he served as the vice-president of the privately chartered German Colonial Society for Southwest Africa; his brother Johann Albrecht was president from 1895 to 1920.

The colony was established towards the end of the period of European colonisation in Africa generally known as the "Scramble for Africa". Two separate protectorates were established in 1884. In February 1884, the chiefs of the town of Aného were kidnapped by German soldiers and forced to sign a treaty of protection.[3]
