New climate data shows global temperatures continuing to rise sharply | DW News
Quote
For the first time the world was 1.5 degrees warmer compared to pre-industrial times. It was actually anticipated that this important threshold would only be reached in the next few years or the next decade. Recently, scientists expressed "alarm" over the latest findings that the so-called AMOC, a system of ocean currents in the Atlantic, is about to shift due to rapid ice melt. If it were to fail, Europe would see a dramatic drop in temperatures of up to 10 degrees on average. In southern hemisphere countries, warming could intensify, and in the Amazon region, the rainy and dry seasons could be reversed. Sea levels would rise at a speed that would make it impossible for humans to adapt in time. Have we already exceeded the key 1.5-degree limit agreed in the Paris Climate Accord for good?

West of England train disruption and cancellations due to flooding

Quote

Some train services have been disrupted and cancelled due to heavy rain overnight.

Due to flooding between Pewsey and Westbury, Great Western Railway said services between Reading and Taunton via Westbury may be delayed or cancelled.

GWR also said flooding was affecting alternative routes which would normally be used to divert services.

Given the level of disruption, GWR advised passengers not to travel.

Flood warnings issued across the East of England for Tuesday

Quote

Residents of the East of England have been warned of further flooding.

Continued heavy rainfall across the region has led to a series of flood warnings in Norfolk, Suffolk, Peterborough, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire.

Flood alerts, which are less serious, have been issued in parts of Essex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

A flood warning was issued for the River Nene at Cogenhoe Mill Caravan Site, near Northampton, and further upstream at Whittlesey near Peterborough.

Similar concerns were raised about the River Nar near King's Lynn, in Norfolk, and the River Waveney at Beccles, in Suffolk.

Flood warnings were also issued for the River Ouzel at Leighton Buzzard, Stoke Hammond and Great Brickhill, in Bedfordshire.

Mystery of Siberia's giant exploding craters may finally be solved
Quote
Eight giant, 160-foot-deep (50 meters) craters in the Siberian permafrost have baffled scientists since their discovery more than a decade ago — but a new theory may finally explain how they formed.

The craters are unique to Russia's northern Yamal and Gydan peninsulas and are not known to exist elsewhere in the Arctic, suggesting the key to this puzzle lies in the landscape, according to a preprint paper published Jan. 12 to the EarthArXiv database.

Researchers have proposed several explanations for the gaping holes over the years, ranging from meteor impacts to natural-gas explosions. One theory suggests the craters formed in the place of historic lakes that once bubbled with natural gas rising from the permafrost below. These lakes may have dried up, exposing the ground beneath to freezing temperatures that sealed the vents through which gas escaped. The resulting buildup of gas in the permafrost may eventually have been released through explosions that created the giant craters.

But the historic-lake model fails to account for the fact that these "giant escape craters" (GECs) are found in a variety of geological settings across the peninsulas, not all of which were once covered by lakes, according to the new preprint, which has not been peer reviewed...

France and Germany seek EU assistance while battling against flooding

The regions of Lower Saxony and Thuringia in Germany and Brittany and Nord-Pas-de-Calais, which remains on red alert in France, face particularly harsh flooding due to heavy rainfall.

France answered the call by offering help to Germany, which included flood containment barriers and 16 vehicles that have begun operations. On the other hand, multiple pumps were expected to leave Wednesday from The Netherlands, Czechia and Slovakia to France.

UK weather live: New Met Office warnings as hundreds of flood alerts still in place after Storm Henk

Quote

Hundreds of flood warnings remain in place after Storm Henk swept across the UK leaving a path of disruption,

There are 271 flood warnings and 293 flood alerts across the UK today as heavy rainfall is expected to lead to further chaos.

The Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning across the south of England until 3am tomorrow

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: “The track of the heaviest rain remains uncertain but there is a chance of 20 to 30 mm of rain falling in a 6 to 9 hour period for a portion of the warning area, with a few places seeing as much as 40-50 mm.

“Much of this rain is falling on already wet ground and therefore, impacts are more likely. Meanwhile, a stalled weather front will continue to bring rain and showers across the northeast.”

Scientists say the risk of a volcanic eruption in Iceland remains high, even though seismic activity has decreased in the past few days.  A state of emergency remains in effect and some 4,000 residents of the town of Grindavik near the capital Reykjavik have been evacuated as a precaution. On Monday they were permitted to enter their homes for a few minutes to gather essentials.

Mystery of African elephants dropping dead unravelled by scientists

Quote

The cause of mysterious mass deaths of African elephants has finally been unravelled — and scientists who authored a new report say that the outbreaks could be more likely to occur amid conditions created by the ongoing climate crisis.

Thirty-five African elephants in northwestern Zimbabwe dropped dead under baffling circumstances between late August and November 2020. Eleven of the massive herd animals died within a 24-hour period.

“They died over a very narrow window. That’s one of the most enigmatic parts of the whole puzzle. That many animals dying quite close together but not right next to each other over such a narrow space of time. It’s really to my mind, rather unique, certainly in this part of the world,”
