No Probe Into Prince Andrew Over Jeffrey Epstein Claims, Says UK Police

Quote

UK police said Friday that no investigation has been launched into Prince Andrew after an anti-monarchy group filed a complaint based on recently released US court documents detailing people linked to accused sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

A New York judge on Wednesday began to unseal the identities of those linked in the documents to disgraced US financier Epstein, who killed himself in 2019 while awaiting trial.

In them, Andrew, who is formally known as the Duke of York, is accused of groping a woman, which he denies.

13 times the royal family has faced racism allegations through the years

Quote

Allegations of racism in the British royal family span back centuries.

Several British monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth I, King James I, and King William III, directly supported or enabled the slave trade in the UK from the mid-1500s until it was abolished in 1833, The Guardian's David Conn reported in April. Neither the late Queen Elizabeth II nor King Charles III, the country's current monarch, has ever publicly apologized for the atrocities from which the institution has profited.

More recently, a new book about the royals, titled "Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy's Fight for Survival," by Omid Scobie shared details of recent racism allegations against some members of the royal family.

The original Dutch translation of the book was temporarily pulled after its release on November 28 as it reportedly named Kate Middleton and King Charles as the royals who made racially insensitive remarks about Prince Archie's skin tone before he was born in 2019.

The section of the book references Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, where they said family members had spoken about their "concerns" over the duo's son Archie's skin tone.

The royal family has been under the public microscope in recent years, facing allegations of problematic language and behavior that stretch into the business side of the institution. For example, a 2021 investigation conducted by The Guardian showed that Buckingham Palace once prohibited "colored immigrants or foreigners" from office roles and a July 2023 report by The Independent said that racist language had been used in the royal family's art collection.

The late Queen Elizabeth II never apologized for the monarchy's role in the slave trade.

millions of enslaved African people were transported from Britain to its then-colonies in the Caribbean, North and South America, and other countries during the 16th century until 1807 in exchange for goods.

The Guardian's David Conn reported in April that a number of British monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth I and James I, supported or profited from Britain's slave trade.

The late Queen Elizabeth II, who reigned from 1952 until 2022, never publicly apologized for the monarchy's involvement.

Queen Elizabeth's late husband, Prince Philip, made controversial racial remarks during royal engagements over the years.

Philip was known for his controversial humor through the years and often made comments that are considered racist.

Harry was criticized for using a racial slur when talking to an Asian army colleague in 2006.

The late Queen faced backlash for not publicly showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020.

In 2021, the palace reportedly ditched plans to hire a diversity chief despite having a low percentage of non-white employees.

A 2021 investigation, conducted by The Guardian, revealed that the palace once banned "colored immigrants or foreigners" from office roles.

Buckingham Palace banned "colored immigrants or foreigners" from being employed in office roles until at least the late 1960s, according to documents obtained by The Guardian's David Pegg and Rob Evans.

According to the documents, which were released in June 2021, the Queen's chief financial manager said in 1968 that people from ethnic minority backgrounds were allowed to be employed as domestic servants in the royal household, but were banned from holding clerical jobs.

The Guardian report also stated that the late Queen Elizabeth was exempt from race and gender equality laws since they were introduced in the UK in the 1970s. This means women and people from ethnic minorities working for the royal household have been unable to complain to the courts if they believe they have been discriminated against on the basis of race.

Queen Elizabeth's former lady-in-waiting Susan Hussey made racist remarks towards a charity founder at a palace event in 2022.

Ngozi Fulani, the founder of Sistah Space, a charity that supports African and Caribbean women affected by domestic violence, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that she was asked by a member of palace staff where she "really came from" at a palace reception in November 2022.

Most recently, The Royal Collection Trust was accused of using racist language in official documents.

King Charles’s visit to Kenya unearths memories of ‘unresolved injustices’

Quote

A five-day visit to Kenya by Britain’s King Charles III is unearthing memories of atrocities committed during the six-decade colonisation of the East African country.

According to the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC),  the colonial administration masterminded the extrajudicial torture and killings of 90,000 Kenyans during that period.

As King Charles landed in Nairobi on Tuesday for his first state visit to Africa since becoming king after Queen Elizabeth II’s death last year, some Kenyans were waiting for him to formally apologise for the “acts of violence” as Charles described them.

But the monarch stopped short of doing so.

Some see it as a reminder of the dark colonial past, during which thousands of people were tortured and killed as they fought for the country’s independence.

the visit is an insult to the people of Kenya and a reopening of old wounds.

His colonial brothers … wreaked havoc in our country and tried to wipe us out,” she said. “I heard him in the news yesterday that he regrets the acts of the colonialists, but there’s nowhere he says how he plans to compensate all those people.

Indigenous Kenyans call on King Charles III to compensate them for stolen land

Britain’s King Charles III began a four-day visit to Kenya on Tuesday. Communities in western Kenya are using it as an opportunity to press their case for compensation for injustices they suffered when the country was under British rule.

The colonial administration took hundreds of square kilometres of land that communities in western Kenya had lived on for generations and handed it to British settlers.

Much of it became tea plantations that today belong to multinational companies and are worth billions of euros.

"The money which is obtained here is being siphoned out of this country to foreigners ... who are enjoying the fruits of our Kipsigi soil," said Joel Kimetto, an activist for the Kipsigi indigenous group.

"King Charles needs to know that we are still suffering. He needs to compensate us for the losses we have suffered," added Kibore Cheruyiot Ngasura, a local who was evicted from the land to a detention camp during Britain's colonial rule.

King Charles III seeks to look ahead in a visit to Kenya. But he'll have history to contend with

Quote

King Charles III wants to look to the future when his state visit to Kenya starts on Tuesday. But first he will have to confront the past.

As Charles prepares for the four-day trip to Kenya, he is facing calls to address the legacy of eight decades of British colonial rule, as well as complaints that foreigners still own large swaths of rich farmland, and that the U.K. has failed to accept responsibility for the crimes of British soldiers stationed in Kenya.

The trip will also be closely watched around the world, because it's the king's first state visit to an African nation and his first to a Commonwealth member since he ascended the throne last year. It comes at a time when the U.K. and the royal family is under pressure to re-examine the history of colonialism and apologize for its role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

"History never disappears," said Nick Westcott, a professor of diplomacy at SOAS University of London

In the age of colonialism, Kenya was one of the jewels of the British Empire.

the Mau Mau Rebellion of the 1950s, which hastened the end of colonial rule, but continues to cloud relations between the U.K. and Kenya. Colonial authorities resorted to executions and detention without trial as they tried to put down the insurrection, and thousands of Kenyans said they were beaten and sexually assaulted by agents of the administration.

For the U.K. and allies like the United States, Kenya is a strategically important hub of relative stability and democracy in East Africa, as they combat the threat from Islamic extremists based primarily in neighbouring Somalia.

renewed a defence agreement that underpins cooperation on counterterrorism efforts and allows British soldiers to train in Kenya.

a new generation of Kenyans question what links, if any, their country should have with its former colonial power, which left behind not only memories of brutality, but also colonial-era laws

The Rift Valley of western Kenya remains a flashpoint for concerns about land ownership, because most of the fertile region's tea and pineapple farms are owned by foreigners.

Veteran politician and human rights activist Koigi Wamwere says the continued ownership of huge parcels by British citizens while local people have no land is an "injustice that should be corrected."

Kenya and the U.K. "cannot move forward until they apologize, offer reparations and return the land they stole," he said.

Dozens of people are gearing up to protest what they describe as crimes committed by British forces stationed in Kenya.

Under colonial rule the institution of the sultan was formally preserved as part of a French policy of indirect rule, or at least the appearance of indirect rule. Under the French Protectorate, the 'Alawi sultans still had some prerogatives such as the power to sign or veto dahirs (decrees). In the Spanish zone, a Khalifa ("deputy") was appointed who acted as a representative of the sultan. In practice, however, the sultan was a puppet of the new regime and many parts of the population saw the dynasty as collaborators with the French. The French colonial administration was headed by the French resident-general, the first of whom was Hubert Lyautey, who enacted many of the policies that set the tone for France's colonial regime in Morocco.[39][46]

‘Not my King!’: Protesters in Scotland boo, heckle King Charles

Quote

Anti-monarchist protesters gathered in Scotland on Wednesday to boo, yell and chant “not my King” ahead of King Charles’ thanksgiving service in Edinburgh.

A service of dedication for King Charles and Queen Camilla, as a way to mark the coronation, took place at St Giles’ Cathedral, where Charles was presented with the country’s crown jewels.

Hundreds turned up Wednesday afternoon along the Royal Mile leading to the cathedral with yellow placards, loudly expressing their displeasure with the royal visitors.

The protests took place during Scotland’s Royal Week, or “Holyrood Week,” which marks Charles’ first since becoming King. The occasion will be marked by several celebrations, including a 21-gun salute, a flypast and a procession through the streets of Edinburgh.

One of the groups involved in the demonstrations was Republic, a pressure group campaigning for the abolition of the monarchy.

Protester Evie Smith, who lives on the Royal Mile, told SkyNews that while she’s in favour of the monarchy, she wants to see the British Royal Family put more money “back into the country.”

“Some people can’t even afford a Sunday dinner. Others like nurses are also looking for better pay,” she told the outlet.
“I would like to see [the Royals] give significantly more back, as well as all the billionaires.”

Grant McKenzie, a member of Republic, told Good Morning Scotland that protesters are upset with the amount of money being spent on pomp and pageantry.

“It’s being forced upon us. We’ve got an unprecedented cost of living crisis,” he said.

“I don’t think the public in the U.K. are particularly interested in their taxpayer money being put towards a parade up and down the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. It’s tone-deaf.

“Of course, people are going to be able to enjoy it if that’s what they want to do. Protests by their very nature are disruptive. We will be making ourselves visible and heard.”
