"Velcros. They are not as water-resistant anymore, but otherwise are still functional."

This reminded me of some old sandals I still have. Thinking of it now, would you agree that sandals are more earthly and non-Western than conventional shoes are?

"Same! On the other hand, I despise performative grungers who deliberately damage new clothes (or furniture etc.) in order to then mend them so as to fabricate the style. They are in my eyes no better than those who undergo cosmetic surgery to fake a gracile face shape."

Yes absolutely. What's worse is when people buy clothing that are already (performatively) damaged, making the inauthenticity even more lazy. Even working class baseball caps aren't spared. Gone are the weatherworn and well-seasoned hats people have worn on the job since they were teenagers, now truck stops sell hats with an insincerely made "grimy" look to them fresh off the shelf. It used to be commonly understood that Counterculture requires commitment and authenticity. What happened? Posers must die.

Going back to this thread's topic, may I risk a rare Counterculture stamp of approval for this one?

Even if you and I may not like how the song sounds itself, when it came out it felt noteworthy for a popular song's message to be a lighthearted passion for thrift. Its just a breath of fresh air compared to most of what's out there today.

"Seriously, what kind of shoes are they? They're still holding up after all this time?"

Velcros. They are not as water-resistant anymore, but otherwise are still functional.

"I always try to mend my clothing, the stitches and patches are a point of pride for me."

Same! On the other hand, I despise performative grungers who deliberately damage new clothes (or furniture etc.) in order to then mend them so as to fabricate the style. They are in my eyes no better than those who undergo cosmetic surgery to fake a gracile face shape.

The characteristics you describe are also reflected in:

The grunge look typically consisted of second-hand clothes or thrift store items

"Grunge ... became an anti-consumerist movement where the less you spent on clothes, the more 'coolness' you had."[106]

I myself have so much coolness that I am still wearing the same pair of shoes that I used to wear to school in the 90s.  8)

If a necessary condition for something to be called Counterculture is promotion of anti-Western aesthetics, then the main issue is whether or not its American influences count as anti-Western. Chronologically, the Counterculture era had already begun in America by then, so a strong case can be made that citypop artists perceived American influences as anti-Western. It should especially be noted that American aesthetics are associated with anti-conservatism in Japan:

That's what I was stuck on. I know many in Japan call citypop "Western" at first glance for its American influences alone, but I agree that's not really the case once you look beneath the surface at its anti-conservative connotations.

Quote
which would appear to be a symptom of low self-esteem, whereas we typically associate Counterculture with the regaining of self-esteem by "non-whites". I think what was going on at the time was that citypop artists were dissatisfied with Western aesthetics but felt safer challenging it with American aesthetics. As they saw other artists successfully challenging Western aesthetics without relying on American aesthetics, the citypop artists rejoined the mainstream, thus citypop as a separate genre faded away.

Is it fair to say that there are some Counterculture genres are superior to others? I would consider lo-fi, for one, to be superior. The uniquely relaxing atmosphere of lo-fi aside, lo-fi is incredibly nostalgic as well. You don't really have a lo-fi song without a sample from a movie or sound effect from the '90s. To me, lo-fi is the musical equivalent to Japanese minimalist art, as its characteristics of understated low-fidelity easily fits these Aryan concepts influenced from Zen Buddhism:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi

Quote
In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi (侘び寂び) centers on the acceptance of transience and imperfection.[2] It is often described as the appreciation of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete".[3] It is prevalent in many forms of Japanese art.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ma_(negative_space)

Quote
In modern interpretations of traditional Japanese arts and culture, ma is an artistic interpretation of an empty space, often holding as much importance as the rest of an artwork and focusing the viewer on the intention of negative space in an art piece. The concept of space as a positive entity is opposed to the absence of such a principle in a correlated "Japanese" notion of space.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shibui
Quote
Shibui (渋い) (adjective), shibumi (渋み) (subjective noun), or shibusa (渋さ) (objective noun) are Japanese words that refer to a particular aesthetic of simple, subtle, and unobtrusive beauty

Quote
Shibui objects appear to be simple overall, but they include subtle details, such as textures, that balance simplicity with complexity. This balance of simplicity and complexity ensures that one does not tire of a shibui object, but constantly finds new meanings and enriched beauty that cause its aesthetic value to grow over the years. Shibusa walks a fine line between contrasting aesthetic concepts such as elegant and rough or spontaneous and restrained

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_pop

Quote
There is no consensus among scholars regarding the definition of city pop.[2] In Japan, the term referred to music that projected an "urban" feel and whose target demographic was urbanites. Many city pop artists did not embrace Japanese influences,[2] and instead largely drew from American funk, soft rock and boogie.[9] Some songs feature tropical flourishes or elements taken from disco, jazz fusion, Okinawan, Latin and Caribbean music.

It should especially be noted that American aesthetics are associated with anti-conservatism in Japan:

https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Yanki

Quote
The name "yankii" is borrowed from the English word "Yankee", a name taken from the American GIs who gave the Japanese their first glimpse into the world of rock ‘n’ roll.[1]

in contrast to conservative Japanese preferring European aesthetics. So from this angle citypop could be considered Counterculture. On the other hand, we cannot ignore the attempt to minimize Japanese influences in citypop (back to first link):

Quote
"City pop" referred to the likes of Sugar Babe [ja] and Eiichi Ohtaki, artists who scrubbed out the Japanese influences of their predecessors and introduced the sounds of jazz and R&B—genres said to have an "urban" feel—to their music. ... The term has drifted in and out of the musical lexicon ever since. ... With a term as vague and broad as city pop, it's natural that no one seems to be agreeing on what the label actually means anymore.[2]

which would appear to be a symptom of low self-esteem, whereas we typically associate Counterculture with the regaining of self-esteem by "non-whites".

"Would you have not preferred any infrastructure created during Counterculture?"

The main problem is that infrastructure of that period still had to accept modern norms in order to fit in with surrounding infrastructure.

"Were Counterculture architects fans of pre-colonial architecture?"

Some might have been. Certainly there was awareness that Western architecture was wrong for most parts of the world. We can continue this discussion here:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/issues/decolonized-housing-(america-edition)/

"Have they admitted their designs would have never surpassed pre-colonial architecture?"

I do not recall encountering such admissions.

“I definitely prefer pre-colonial architecture.”
Would you have not preferred any infrastructure created during Counterculture? Were Counterculture architects fans of pre-colonial architecture? Have they admitted their designs would have never surpassed pre-colonial architecture?

I’m thinking of a difference between Counterculture era music and today’s music. In Counterculture era, there were fewer big companies that decided on much fewer designated demos to be released. Today’s era doesn’t have that sort of top-down approach as anyone with access to the internet can strive for fame and become successful (which is why not only are not many musicians on a legendary level, but many of 21st century’s top music sounds as degenerate as National Socialists’ pick of degenerate musicians despite being of completely different genres: https://trueleft.createaforum.com/colonial-era/hitler-the-face-of-anti-tribalism/msg14811/#msg14811 ).

“Many people are tempted into waiting for it to happen, to the extent of being willing to bring an indefinite number of new generations into existence.”
They are slaves to society’s status quo. Even when they watch stuff like Sailor Moon, they take its morals as fiction as opposed to consideration.

"Are there also things in the Counterculture era that cannot surpass pre-colonial aesthetics?"

I definitely prefer pre-colonial architecture.

"there is a small chance it would happen."

Of course, and that's the problem. Many people are tempted into waiting for it to happen, to the extent of being willing to bring an indefinite number of new generations into existence.

“I also grew up with Western classical music and never liked it.”
Of course it already existed. It predates the Counterculture era. But the Counterculture was a relatively new thing (meaning around your time). That may have sounded a little progressive, but that was less about valuing the newer things than it was about determining if it was out of nostalgia. Are there also things in the Counterculture era that cannot surpass pre-colonial aesthetics?

“Your start off assuming anything from the past will eventually be surpassed by something in the future (and that this is a good thing). And so long as it doesn't happen you merely think it hasn't happened yet.”
But regardless, there is a small chance it would happen.
Of course every True Leftist here is rooting for you, and sure people need to know what is abundantly available before they think about creating entirely new content. But it would take more efficient natural methods to make creation and fashion history. Anyone can complain about the status quo, but at Hitler’s time, it was almost made happen.

But at the end, what’s more important than disliking existing Western music is preventing more music from existing. And that it’s almost ok to like any music. Hitler’s favorite music at the time was already Westernized, but he preferred it over creating new music. Most of the performed music at that time were not original (they were especially out of fan tribute).
So if one were to perform or create art or other content, it should be out of fan tribute. That almost happened during post-Counterculture era:

I also grew up with Western classical music and never liked it.

"But don’t be surprised if someone later than yourself with your current ranking thought the purpose wasn’t fulfilled and finds a later music culture better than Counterculture:"

You are a progressive (and hence Westerner), then. Your start off assuming anything from the past will eventually be surpassed by something in the future (and that this is a good thing). And so long as it doesn't happen you merely think it hasn't happened yet. I, on the other hand, am a regressive. I do not want it to happen and do not like those who try to make it happen.

“The music that has the greatest emotional impact on me is Counterculture music.”
Are you sure it’s not because it’s what you grew up with? Because the ones I knew who thought so were born in the middle of Counterculture (who’s outlook peaked in their teens right before 9/11).
If I’m wrong then maybe it could be because music has been more prominent in pop culture than music was in ancient times (which, along with pronunciation-dependent languages, survived less than pottery, architecture, clothing, visual artwork, pronunciation-independent languages, etc), so of course there’s going to be more counterculture music to chose from.
If you actually think Counterculture was the peak of culture, go ahead. But don’t be surprised if someone later than yourself with your current ranking thought the purpose wasn’t fulfilled and finds a later music culture better than Counterculture:

But then again, I got to do some self discovery to see if I’m worthy or not. I might be. I might not be. Who knows. I have to find out. I have to know myself and my qualities, discover my passion, and if there is something in need of fulfillment, then I might use my inner qualities to fulfill it. If there is something I’m passionate about, I would contribute faithfully. If I were to create, I’d have to already have been a fan. Just to be sure, it is what you said about Eurocentrist New China:
https://trueleft.createaforum.com/issues/media-decolonization/msg26470/#msg26470
Quote
The correct attitude is for you as an artist to start off subjectively as a fan of the pop culture product you yourself are producing. If even the producer is not a fan, how can the consumers be expected to become fans? Yet this is the attitude most absent in "New China". Instead, prod
And Sailor Moon vs Crystal
https://trueleft.createaforum.com/counterculture-era/the-archetype-of-the-warrior-how-films-help-empower-us-all/msg24643/#msg24643
Quote
I am firmly in the camp that appreciates the original series precisely for not sticking to the comic book source material (unlike Crystal).

And from the example of legendary figures of many cultures, their cultures were deficient in quality, so it needed a hero with empathy to make it strong. That’s when they come in. But they weren’t toying with fame, honor, etc. Because the cultures didn’t provide that. They were toiling with growing their culture to what it later became. Do you think Motown provided the Jacksons with a good life and that they were in for the trends? No. The Jacksons (especially Michael) made the best of what they got and used their inner strengths. They went through the struggle so they deserve the success
Of course this is more about already existing cultures. This is not to say one should create a culture to grow it.

"Do you think in a post-Counterculture world, live music is better than recorded music?"

These days I personally only listen to Counterculture-era recordings. If I want the stage atmosphere I can watch a recording of a concert.

"Can people attempt challenge all the music available (especially Eurocentric music like K-pop)?"

We can already place Kpop and Counterculture music side by side to compare which is better, therefore there is no need to challenge Kpop with new music.

And if people at any point in time challenge the music available at that time, when does it end? This is precisely the Western world:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/true-left-vs-right/homo-hubris/msg16791/?topicseen#msg16791

Quote
Western art is persistently creative, never rigid and traditionalist. New artistic epochs emerge (Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo, Classicism, Romanticism, Naturalism, Impressionism) in opposition to prevailing conventions with increasing acceleration from the Renaissance onwards, led by artists who purposely wanted to break away from the prejudices of their age, innovate and experiment, and demonstrate thereby their own artistic genius.

Quote
Western Europe always differed profoundly from the East. In the East [artistic] styles lasted for thousands of years, and there seemed no reason why they should ever change. The West never knew this immobility. It was always restless, groping for new solutions and new ideas (p. 131).

Among European painters there was an “urge to be different,” do something new, find a new way to enhance the aesthetic effect of the work, convey something different about the world, new life experiences along with permanent aspects of human nature. Using originality and restless creativity as his central criterion, Gombrich could not but pay far less attention to an Eastern artistic tradition that remained continuously the same through the centuries.

Quote
the sublime originality of Western art in its incessant striving for new forms of aesthetic perfection. Other civilizations remained content with reenacting the perfection they had achieved in the past. The West was different

which is what we are trying to avoid! The world we want to get back to is the non-Western one!

"How should they give up if they’re passionate about it?"

They can still be fans.

"But do you think so?"

I do not.

"If not, why?"

The music that has the greatest emotional impact on me is Counterculture music.

"And someone’s music could challenge post-Counterculture music. Can’t it?"

Why not just place post-Counterculture music side by side with Counterculture music to compare them?

And again, if post-Counterculture music can be challenged with post-post-Counterculture music, which can then be challenged with post-post-post Counterculture music, which can then be challenged with post-post-post-post Counterculture music, and so on, when does it end?

But what if it the newly released music was from sincere fan tribute (even if it is not your taste)?

“So what is your question?”
Do you think in a post-Counterculture world, live music is better than recorded music? I know you said that in the counterculture, recorded music only used to be a reliable path, but now there’s so much recorded music to chose from while live music just happens once. Also live music was dominated in non-Western cultures while recorded music dominated in the post-renaissance world (due to the convenience of music sheets) as we will never know what pre-colonial music sounded like. So I ask again, is live music (at least on occasions) better than recorded music in this day and era? If there’s anything I need to clarify, please say so.

“You start off presuming musicians must exist at any given time”
Im not saying they should exist. Im saying that people should be allowed to make music. Can people attempt challenge all the music available (especially Eurocentric music like K-pop)?

“I am arguing that this condition has already been reached.”
But a lot of people are already involved in music at the current moment. How should they give up if they’re passionate about it?

“but you need to be able to state precisely how much more will bring us to enough, and explain why no less than that.”
Ok, but it will take a lot of music listening and a lot from my spirit to figure it out.

“As far as I can remember, I have never claimed that pre-colonial music was superior to Counterculture music.”
But do you think so? If not, why?

“In any case, Counterculture music was justified by the need to challenge Western classical music supremacism.”
And someone’s music could challenge post-Counterculture music. Can’t it?

"There are not as much postmodern musicians creating original live songs as there are musicians creating original recorded songs. Besides live performances happens once (unlike recorded performances that can happen infinitely). If any audience member records the performances and shares it, they’re the ones recording it. Not me."

So what is your question?

"Whats the point of the musician if music cannot even be performed (let alone created)?"

Your (Western) logic is the wrong way round. You start off presuming musicians must exist at any given time, and then demand they keep generating music in order that their existence always has a "point". Actually, musicians only need to exist until there is enough good music available. I am arguing that this condition has already been reached. Therefore there is no need for additional musicians.

You can disagree that there is enough good music available at present, but you need to be able to state precisely how much more will bring us to enough, and explain why no less than that.

"Also why were works of the Counterculture era (or even the romantic era) created if neither won’t get to the level of true pre-colonial music?"

As far as I can remember, I have never claimed that pre-colonial music was superior to Counterculture music. If you think I have made such a claim, please link to the exact quote, and I will gladly adjust my wording to remove any confusion.

In any case, Counterculture music was justified by the need to challenge Western classical music supremacism.

“I do not understand.”
There are not as much postmodern musicians creating original live songs as there are musicians creating original recorded songs. Besides live performances happens once (unlike recorded performances that can happen infinitely). If any audience member records the performances and shares it, they’re the ones recording it. Not me.

“Same question: how many times does the same song have to be covered before you will say: "OK, this song has more than enough covers already. Let's stop covering this song."?”
They’re just covers. They’re not original songs.
Whats the point of the musician if music cannot even be performed (let alone created)?

“how much of such directional music does there have to be before you will say: "OK, we have more than enough directional music already. Let's stop with the directional music."?”
The point is to lead people to their preferred music culture. There may be a lot. There may be little. But as long as everyone finds their style, then mission complete.

Also why were works of the Counterculture era (or even the romantic era) created if neither won’t get to the level of true pre-colonial music?

"For the latter, could it mean being an anonymous ghost musician?"

It could, but that still doesn't answer how much music will be considered more than enough.

"Could it mean only performing written songs live when it’s occasional?"

I do not understand.

"What about performing covers of other music?"

Same question: how many times does the same song have to be covered before you will say: "OK, this song has more than enough covers already. Let's stop covering this song."?

"What about in media platforms/services where good music is rare?"

Different platforms with different definitions of good music will automatically each host more music that fits their own definition of good music respectively. People looking for good music will then gravitate to whichever platform's definition best matches their own. I don't see any problem here.

"What if the music was meant to direct people to already available music?"

Same question: how much of such directional music does there have to be before you will say: "OK, we have more than enough directional music already. Let's stop with the directional music."? (It's like you put up a sign inside a building pointing to a location, and then you put up another sign pointing to where the first sign is, and so on. How many signs before you can agree that there are already more than enough signs?)

"What if the music currently made will attempt to “stand still”?"

If you can make such a claim about your music today, the next person can make the same claim about their music tomorrow, and so on. Whereupon music is surely not "standing still"!

"All I want to do is make what is good music."

Is this about you being the one making the good music, or is this about good music being available? If the former, that is where space-filling comes from when person after person thinks like that. If the latter, how much good music must there be in the world before you can say: "There is more than enough good music in the world already."? If you ask me, this quantity has already been exceeded thanks to the Counterculture era. Even if you do nothing except listen to music every day, you could spend a lifetime listening to Counterculture era music and not run out of good content to listen to. This topic is supposed to demonstrate this. But if you ask Westerners, no finite quantity of good music will be considered enough.

"would it be a good idea to start another musical culture?"

If you are doing so because you are qualitatively dissatisfied with all music currently available, it could theoretically be justified. Are you? But even in that case, what if after you the next person claims similar motivation (but including your musical culture within what they are dissatisfied with) and starts yet another musical culture, and so on? Clearly the result would be the space-filling of possible musical cultures. Therefore I would advise a degree of scepticism. Certainly in your case since just a few posts ago you seemed to like Counterculture music, it is hard to believe that all of a sudden you are dissatisfied with it, and more likely that you are just looking for an excuse to add stuff. But even if for the sake of argument we assume that within a mere one day interval you have entirely changed your opinion of Counterculture music, then given you are capable of such change, who is to say that you will not change your opinion about your own prospective musical culture later, and thus feel the need to start a second new musical culture, and then a third, and so on? When does it stop?

“Remember space-filling as a Western tendency?”
I am not sure about space filling, but I am sure of cultural appropriation.

“I cannot stop you, but I hope I can persuade you to not do this.”
Then I’ll try not to do it.

“Are you going to remove the sacredness from Counterculture music too?”
All I want to do is make what is good music. If appropriating Counterculture music is not the way to go, would it be a good idea to start another musical culture? Because that’s what Hitler did with NS Germany as explained in the main site:
Quote
Folkish nationalism is not to be confused with civic nationalism. Civic nationalism is, like ethnonationalism, concerned with preserving the traditional culture of a country, but merely differs from ethnonationalism in that it does not require the preservers to be unanimously the blood descendants of those traditional ancestors. The consequence of successful folkish nationalism, in contrast, would be the creation of a new culture altogether. Hitler’s original choice for the name of his party was ”Social Revolutionary Party” before later settling on “NSDAP” for practical reasons. Nevertheless, National Socialists are necessarily social revolutionaries in thinking.
So in logic, could I start a new musical culture? If so, what are the key elements to good music? And how can I turn bad music that I happen to like into good music? Have any artists (Counterculture or otherwise) did so? I’m aware a lot of artists were supposedly influenced by Western classical music but ended up making music that was qualitatively superior.

"Is it insulting that I enjoy a soundtrack without knowing the context?"

No.

"I didn’t intend to act like a Westerner. I was trying to de-Westernize myself by learning the traits of Counterculture music and of post-Counterculture music, so I can apply it musically."

That is precisely what is Western about your behaviour. The Counterculture era is over. If you had genuine respect for that era and its music, you would not want to create more music like it (thereby debasing the value of the originals), and especially not by breaking it down into abstract traits and then replicating those traits in your own music despite not being from the Counterculture yourself (meaning that your music did not come from your spirit but from your studied knowledge of the form of the music that came from other people's spirits). But Westerners instead only think: "I like Counterculture music, therefore I will create more of it!" Remember space-filling as a Western tendency?

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/true-left-vs-right/if-western-civilization-does-not-die-soon/msg17836/#msg17836

One way or another, Westerners will try to fill every space they get their hands on.

This is what you are in danger of doing. You want to fill the space of Counterculture music, instead of letting the space remain unfilled (as non-Westerners would). If you go ahead with this, I will regret ever recommending all these songs to you, because I will only have ended up assisting you in disrespecting the Counterculture era, which was never my intention. (But at least my racial theory will have been proven correct yet again.) I cannot stop you, but I hope I can persuade you to not do this.

Nothing would be worse for Counterculture music than for it to be reduced to an assembly formula (based on those traits you so want to understand). By this very method, Western civilization has already removed the sacredness from so many other things. Are you going to remove the sacredness from Counterculture music too?

"In other words, it’s pretentious."

Trying too hard is not necessarily pretentious. There are some who try too hard with sincere artistic intentions rather than to impress others.

"theme from 78-80."

I of course consider 79 by far the best of the three. I also like 89 and 97, the latter especially well-suited as the theme of In Memory of the Walther P-38, the only story where the main villain is actually on Lupin's own level instead of being many levels lower:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1PXQ-ju9aQ

I personally would have preferred them to revert to 89 for subsequent TV specials, instead of continuing to use 97.

"On the contrary, how faithful is Cowboy Bebop to Lupin III:"

I am aware that it is a derivative, but I was never a fan of it. Not that I have anything against derivatives in general (heck, Sailor Moon is a derivative of Sukeban Deka, and I love both!), but the Cowboy Bebop characters just did not interest me. (Also, the space travel setting might have been a turn-off for me.) As for the above BGM, it feels too choreographed, unlike the Lupin theme which flows much more spontaneously. In this it mirrors my impression for Cowboy Bebop overall: it just seems to try too hard.

The ending theme also lacks sentimentalism compared to Lupin III counterparts:

Yea. I always listen to the theme from 78-80. On the contrary, how faithful is Cowboy Bebop to Lupin III:

It’s good. For some reason I always like a good order of chords/bass-lining. It always makes the melody and instrumental powerful.

But I did check out the Sailor Moon 5 month marathon posts. I was watching Sailor Moon recently and as of now I’m at the part where Chibiusa found out Usagi and her friends were Sailor Moon and her scouts. "Tradition"

I think "tradition" in the wrong term to use. "Tradition" should mainly be limited to contexts, where deviation from tradition causes the deviant to become out of step with non-deviants and hence disrupts the general order. In music, this is not the case, since a deviant from an established style does not prevent non-deviants from continuing in the established style. More importantly, when we use the term "tradition" we imply initiated violence, which does not apply here either. The artist signs a contract with a record label voluntarily, so if the label then vetos a song the artist want to include, the artist has to go along with the decision, but can choose not to renew the contract when it expires.

“ how about:”
21st century pop music (e.g. EDM, Trap, some Synthwave) is kind of like that (especially those produced by Eurocentrists). They release the same sort music that only NPCs enjoy just to milk profit.

Also recently that I hear this, I think of this about Japanese Jazz:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_jazz
Quote
By the 1970s, the Japanese economic miracle paved the way for Japanese jazz musicians to achieve international fame, along with new musical genres such as city pop, kankyō ongaku, and Japanese folk music.[5] Japanese jazz musicians also began to evolve past Blue Note mimicry and experimented with free jazz, fusion funk, and bebop, among others. This furthered the distinct sound of Japanese jazz. During the 1980s, digital music technology began to influence Japanese jazz.
Blue Note was a Jewish Jazz company. Japan actualizing its Jazz style is more noble than slavishly following traditions. (On the contrary, following tradition can be good for temporary reasons like discovering one’s own style/identity. Tradition usually matters when it is permanent like mindlessly following it. Can’t it?)

“Surely no one would confuse this with Western classical music?”

I was just listening to the song again, and wow it was messy.

"I refuse. The point is to perceive it directly.”
If you won’t then I will. Firstly, the composition is messy. It just included unnecessary wobble synths and synth sequencers and infused ballads and R&B in an ugly way. Of course there are good songs that do that, but the other audio tracks in the post-Counterculture song of Kwan and Tam seems interfered. Not to mention the bass-lining/chord-progression. I don’t know if they were going for smooth or romantic but it was confusing.

It would have been less disappointing if sung by a pair for whom I did not have high expectations. So if this song had to be released one way or another, I would of course have preferred it to have been sung by another pair (preferably post-Counterculture-era debutants). But it would still be a bad song. In other words, I agree that another pair singing it would have been preferable, but disagree that this would have made the song good.

And sure maybe I should have let you say your opinion, but at least describe traits in composition, melody, instrumentation, lyric, etc that you do not like about the song.

“is something like this what you have in mind?”
I like the song. It basically added elements of lullabies into a classic rock and roll song (unlike Counterculture in the West that embellished orchestra and pretentious guitar solos into songs of genres not respected by the status quo).

"But how was anyone supposed to know 9/11 would happen?"

I do not mean that artists should have tried to anticipate anything. I'm just saying that quitting while you are ahead generally leads to a cleaner legacy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-kmB2KxVTI

and should be more encouraged in artistic culture. But the influence of capitalism has encouraged the opposite tendency: to milk as much profit as possible from any success.

"Also, anything released after that date in 2001 could have been finished in creation before that date, so is it really a matter of release?"

You are correct. I am obviously not referring to such content.

"My biggest criticism is that it ignores their track record of “coolness”. Can you explain why the song is bad, but with specifics (not using subjective words like spiritless, painful, etc)?"

I can only use subjective words for such topics, and am proud of this. Trying to objectivize that which was meant to remain subjective is what Westerners do.

You yourself talk about its lack of "coolness", "coolness" also being subjective. On the other hand, I do not entirely agree, as your criticism would imply this song would be good if sung by some other pair without a track record of "coolness", whereas I would not want to listen to this song again no matter who was singing.

"What are examples of the same sensitization of dance music but with lullabies?"

I don’t see why the song itself is that bad. It’s kind of descent (unlike Fan’s return to regular music at the end of Counterculture). "Around what percentage of authors/artists/etc degenerated quickly?"

I have never done a quantitative study, but impressionwise it felt like almost everyone, except those who wisely retired before the Counterculture era was over. Listening to the latter category is actually the best for nostalgic purposes, since even if they were not regarded as particularly cool at the time, in the long run they have ensured nothing but positive memories of themselves:

In contrast, it doesn't matter how superhumanly cool you were during the Counterculture era:

“How do you degenerate so fast when you literally have your own good songs still fresh in your memory to compare your new releases against?”
Then time needed to continue to see what those artists are actually like. Around what percentage of authors/artists/etc degenerated quickly?

“There is much less competition in children's songs”
Then Fan certainly succeeded with children’s songs.

As for my last statement you quoted, I was talking about children’s content catering to each individual issues, like Fan’s song teaching about dental hygiene and especially Tong’s song attempting to understand stuttering problems and finding a way to solve it. All while having a consistent style. (Like the sutras in Dharmic religions)

I think it strengthens the example. How do you degenerate so fast when you literally have your own good songs still fresh in your memory to compare your new releases against?

"Don’t forget this link:"

Thanks!

"But in terms of audience, was Fan more successful with children’s songs than with her prior regular songs?"

There is much less competition in children's songs, so it's hard to compare. Certainly, fans of her early songs (including myself) also enjoyed her children's songs, so I don't believe she was losing any success by doing children's songs.

"And from what I see, Counterculture children’s content really seemed to make efforts to understand not only its collective audience leading to its style as a whole but its diverse spectrum of individuals leading to its songs."

I guess so. For example, here is a regular song (starts 18:41) about cars:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLU6D73zEkE

So when a few years later miniature cars became fashionable among children, guess who got the deal for the associated song?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xH5ivc22ZM4

Instead of giving it to an established but generic children's song singer, they gave it to the established subject matter singer (despite lack of prior children's song credentials). The result was not bad either. The headband might also be the most epic item of clothing I have seen in an MV.  :)

Which is noble since it rejects natural conditioning. Hopefully, mindfulness can be encouraged musically for those who struggle with non-neurotypical conditions (like ADHD, Autism, etc).

But is that "someone" someone living in the Countercuture era or someone living now? Hindsight makes a big difference. This is why a better test would be time travelling back to the Counterculture era and playing the post-Counterculture song to people back then.

"do you know if there’s a translation of the song?"

I do not know of one. But as she explains in the talk show, she sings the first verse from the POV of the main character (0:23) who struggles with stuttering. “The real test is whether or not you could imagine sneaking a post-Counterculture-era song (ballad or not) back into the Counterculture era and successfully passing it off as a Counterculture-era song.”
I would think the real test would be whether or not someone could tell apart a Counterculture era song from a post-Counterculture era song in the first place.

“(Note about the third example: it is designed to help children overcome stuttering. She also drew the comics for the same project:”
I may not understand the song, but do you know if there’s a translation of the song? If not, are there any Counterculture era songs from Tong’s country for (Taiwanese?) second language speakers?

“For contrast, here is an embarassingly bad song of hers also from during the Counterculture era but prior to her finding her true path as a children's song specialist:”
I didn’t really like the song. When the high note right before the chorus leads me to expect a key change, the chorus rather maintains the key unsatisfying-ly.

“Rather than a ballad vs non-ballad issue, I think the more important factor is children being her intended audience. This is what enabled her to both initially develop her style and thereafter maintain it.”
So it’s more about the audience than the actual music. Since Tong’s audience were kids, of course should could have easily maintained it. But if Tong’s audience were adult hedonistic party goers, then of course the audience of the Counterculture are going to move on, resulting in the artist’s pressure to change style. Wouldn’t it be?

"ballads"

This is a very broad category. I am aware that there are ballads today, but they sound very different from those of the Counterculture era, so the same artist merely having ballads then and ballads now is insufficient to imply a maintained style. The real test is whether or not you could imagine sneaking a post-Counterculture-era song (ballad or not) back into the Counterculture era and successfully passing it off as a Counterculture-era song.

"How would you compare Tong’s maintained style with an actual Korean drama ballad (from Counterculture era)"

During the Counterculture era, no one outside of Korea paid attention to Korean media (which is how it should have continued), so such a comparison would never have been made in the first place. (That's why it sounds insulting to suggest such a comparison!)

In any case, Tong also had many non-ballad children's songs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3_haWVmvMI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9frEapk3esE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_T12Aw3zbY

(Note about the third example: it is designed to help children overcome stuttering. She also drew the comics for the same project:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhFuybyUeCs )

For contrast, here is an embarassingly bad song of hers also from during the Counterculture era but prior to her finding her true path as a children's song specialist:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkfqWVLDnjU

Rather than a ballad vs non-ballad issue, I think the more important factor is children being her intended audience. This is what enabled her to both initially develop her style and thereafter maintain it.

It seems like you really admire X Japan.

What I can tell from most of the music you like is that the way that the songs are played/sung are not constrained by arpeggio/fingering/. For example back in this link:
https://trueleft.createaforum.com/counterculture-era/is-counterculture-still-alive/msg18890/#msg18890
The chords in track 2 were elongated to let out more sound. This is compared to that of track 3 which were ornamented resulting in confined sound.

Even Carpenter understands this struggle as there’s no room for breath:

“By tonal complexity I mean the complexity of the sound in a single instant  sof time.”
So basically texture density.

“a choir singing a song will always be more tonally complex than a solo singer singing the exact same song, but not necessarily more dynamically complex.”
In fact, an opera can be more dynamically complex than a chorus, requiring to project in a big venue as much as a chorus does while still being able to sing quietly compared to a chorus all according to the sheet music’s complicated instructions.

“The BGM you linked to is jazz, a genre which predates the Counterculture (despite the particular composition occurring during the Counterculture era). As a genre, jazz is still too concerned with showing off skill.”
Then what would you consider an example of Counterculture piano?
Title: Re: Recommended music to listen to
Post by: 90sRetroFan on April 01, 2025, 06:31:10 pm
By tonal complexity I mean the complexity of the sound in a single instant of time. Dynamic complexity should refer to the complexity in volume trajectory along the time axis (e.g. across at least several beats). For example, a choir singing a song will always be more tonally complex than a solo singer singing the exact same song, but not necessarily more dynamically complex.

"Counterculture piano:"

The BGM you linked to is jazz, a genre which predates the Counterculture (despite the particular composition occurring during the Counterculture era). As a genre, jazz is still too concerned with showing off skill. Counterculture music should be as much as possible about conveying sentiment, and hence performers who overemphasize virtuosity are looked down upon as artistically insincere. The best performers by Counterculture standards are those who have high skill (to match their high sensitivity) but who never use more of it than the meaning of the song itself demands, and who also do not deliberately stack their albums with difficult songs. Performers with less skill than sensitivity but who accept this and perform within their capability are still more respectable by Counterculture standards than performers with more skill but who use it even when there is no reason to do so (which is already a sign of low sensitivity), and/or choose difficult songs just for the sake of it (another sign of low sensitivity).

“The way I see it, the synthesizer was more of an initial battering ram to break down the ingrained presumption that tonal complexity is better by default. Once this had been achieved, there was a reduction in synthesizer prominence and also a return to non-electronic instruments but now used in a less pretentious way.”
That is what you mean my tonal complexity? I would think tonal complexity would mean that a synthesizer could be taken advantage of all the notes like a piano would could have been. Dynamic complexity would have been the term I was looking for.

But is this what you are talking about? Western piano:
https://trueleft.createaforum.com/true-left-vs-right/western-civilization-is-ugly-48/msg3981/#msg3981
Counterculture piano:
https://trueleft.createaforum.com/human-evolution/facial-aryanism/msg16878/#msg16878
In the former, both hands get mixed up and varied. In the latter, we know which hand is the melody and the chord progression because both hands are discrete from each other and don’t take advantage of the whole keyboard input.

I'm just saying that "folkish" is not the term we should use to label what you have described.

Also, I would not say that synthesizer sounds are a necessary condition for music to be considered Counterculture. The way I see it, the synthesizer was more of an initial battering ram to break down the ingrained presumption that tonal complexity is better by default. Once this had been achieved, there was a reduction in synthesizer prominence and also a return to non-electronic instruments but now used in a less pretentious way.

(Similarly, neon signs and painted signs were not mutually exclusive, but the former influenced the latter to use simpler colour configurations.)

I have previously posted examples of non-synthesizer songs, including most obviously some songs with single instrument accompaniment to vocals:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/counterculture-era/recommended-music-to-listen-to/msg23191/#msg23191

as well as songs in which the synthesizer clearly takes a back seat to the mechanical instruments:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/counterculture-era/recommended-music-to-listen-to/msg21694/#msg21694

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/counterculture-era/recommended-music-to-listen-to/msg21413/#msg21413

The last example also answers your question about piano vs synthesizer. While both are keyboard input, the former produces a different sound depending on how hard the key is struck whereas the latter is unaffected by how the key is struck. You can hear the difference in the song.

But wait. How does the synthesizer differ from Western classical music’s most common solo instrument, the piano?
Title: Re: Recommended music to listen to
Post by: HikariDude on March 31, 2025, 08:02:51 am
But there is a staple sound in each of those music cultures. In the case we have been talking about, the staple sound is synthesizers.
Even in music within Counterculture franchises/icons that don’t have neon lights as their aesthetic, there is still a staple sound.
For example, MJ’s style of funk. Zelda has a distinct ancient sound. Chinen’s style of rock and singing. Kudo’s style of singing. Sukeban Deka’s distinct style of music. Sailor Moon has a distinct magical style. Even D&D has a slightly distinct romantic style of Eurobeat compared to MAX, Amuro, etc (though a lot of their songs seem to be covers of European songs).
Those artists/cultures have distinct, predictable styles that true fans appreciate (and false fans appropriate).

The “staple” sound in Western classical music is tonal/instrumental/dynamic/etc variety, which is not a staple as it is not simplified or predictable. K-pop and other post-Counterculture music is no different.

I hope I’m understanding it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "folkish"/"folkism" with regard to music. Folkism is a principle about how to form alliances:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/human-evolution/ethnotribalism-the-computer-simulation/

While you could argue that Counterculture music produced in different countries are collaborating against Western classical music supremacism, they are not allying in the sense of one sacrificing itself for the sake of another (music does not work that way), therefore "folkism" is probably the wrong term to use.
Title: Re: Recommended music to listen to

“In the second and third videos, I am having trouble finding the neon/LED.”
I’m guessing either you not find the third song that bad or the second and third song music doesn’t match with neon or LED lights or some other reason I cannot think of.

This is more to do with the instrumental variation  of the songs themselves.

I know I should have found an example of neon and LED lights since that’s what the current discussion would be.
But all I wanted to understand was the basis of the movement’s music, and from what I understand, music should be folkish.
The folkish purpose of Counterculture music is electronics for instrumentation as synthesizers are an evolution of guitar amplifiers from the post-WWII rock and roll era. There’s also folkism in ancient music as the general purpose of music in any ancient civilization was fewer and simplified staple instruments.
There is no folkism in an orchestra due to minimal common traits. And even without orchestras, Western classical music is not prevented from displaying tonal complexity. The only “purpose” of Western classical music is diversity (ie. complexity) in its true ignoble sense, which is not a real purpose due to lack of simplification.

But in conclusion, I only wanted to understand what the basis is of True Left music itself (not specific to synthesizers, neon, etc) and to see if you validate that theory above.

In your first video, it is still much more unpredictable due to both the the much larger total number of different colours involved and the lack of discretization.

In the second and third videos, I am having trouble finding the neon/LED. Could you please post timestamps?

“once the arranger decides on a particular discrete sound for a whole keyboard line, every note of that line can then be counted upon to sound exactly the same (except for pitch difference, obviously).”
And then a synthesizer with a different sound can be added for instrumental variation/complexity.

"Then what would you consider K-pop to have used instead?"

Kpop should never have existed.

"I would not consider synthesizers that predictable since they can be adjusted to any sound imagined"

In theory, yes, but in practice once the arranger decides on a particular discrete sound for a whole keyboard line, every note of that line can then be counted upon to sound exactly the same (except for pitch difference, obviously). That is what I meant by predictable. Similar to the discretized colour inside every part of a neon tube (as opposed to, for example, the continuously varying colours in an oil painting):

"But doesn’t the comparison I made still coincide that OSTs and other music have progressed to sound more instrumentally complex?"

Sure, of course I prefer the SNES version of Kakariko Village. But when I listen to it I don't especially feel like I am back in the Coounterculture era the way I feel when I listen to the examples that I posted, because even Kakariko Village (the place) itself is not in the Counterculture era.

“the synthesizer is associated strictly with the Counterculture era, therefore Kpop, which is a phenomenon that began after the Counterculture era ended, should not be using it”
Then what would you consider K-pop to have used instead? Because today’s music production is electronic so of course musicians these days are going to use something as electronic as synthesizers. If you mean that the way K-pop artists appropriated synthesizers to be included for instrumental variation, then I would agree (like the E-Girls version of ‘Odoru Pompokolin’ I posted). Or do you mean that K-pop (and other post-Counterculture music) should have implemented an instrumental folk of their own time rather than appropriating synthesizer music. Then I would also agree.

“Think of a neon sign as an optical version of a synthesizer track”
With that logic, think of LED lights as an optical version of Trap/EDM music. LED lights (a result of neon lights) and Trap/EDM music (results of synthesizer music) have already existed before Counterculture ended, and yet post-Counterculture-era takes credit for both. Memes and emojis also existed before Counterculture ended and are also taken credit by post-Counterculture-era. In other words, post-Counterculture-era has no true aesthetics.

“predictable acoustics as its core feature”
I would not consider synthesizers that predictable since they can be adjusted to any sound imagined in terms of oscillator, LFO, envelope, etc. and additional synthesizers with different adjustments can also be added to its mix.

“I oonsider Zelda a bad example, however, as it is set in an ancient fantasy world”
But doesn’t the comparison I made still coincide that OSTs and other music have progressed to sound more instrumentally complex?

"While one can argue that synthesizers are a product of progressivism"

I do not see it this way. I see orchestration as a progressive mindset in the sense of adding more and more different instruments into simultaneous play in order to achieve ever-increasing acoustic complexity. The synthesizer represents open opposition to this by offering predictable acoustics as its core feature.

"Various tracks within any pre-3D game OST can work really."

I oonsider Zelda a bad example, however, as it is set in an ancient fantasy world. In my previous post, I deliberately chose games in contemporary settings to emphasize the music's specific and proud association with that time period, equivalent to a neon sign in architecture (which would look out of place in Zelda for sure!) Think of a neon sign as an optical version of a synthesizer track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7i4qcPmVJc

or a synthesizer track as an audial version of a neon sign:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr_wGg_04_E

Now return to Double Dragon:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZXDV06UH-c

Notice the neon signs in the background?

Similarly Streets of Rage:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3YbN-K2zL8

Neon signs again!

"Though I can’t really seem to understand your dislike for K-pop, which is usually synth heavy"

As I keep trying to explain, the synthesizer is associated strictly with the Counterculture era, therefore Kpop, which is a phenomenon that began after the Counterculture era ended, should not be using it. Yet it does. Therefore I dislike it, in the same way that I dislike neo-Nazis using the swastika. Your question is equivalent to: "Though I can't really seem to understand your dislike for neo-Nazism, which is usually swastika heavy."

“The rejection of the synthesizer by the Western classical music circle is evidence of its anti-Western potential”
I have praised synth music in the past:
https://trueleft.createaforum.com/counterculture-era/recommended-music-to-listen-to/msg18850/#msg18850
Quote
I like a lot of disco and synth-pop and their derivatives.
While one can argue that synthesizers are a product of progressivism, it does share some traits in common with pre-colonial instrumentation. For example, instruments of ancient civilizations were folkish and populist just like synthesizers.

“it is actually best to listen to various themed tracks from the same OST”
Various tracks within any pre-3D game OST can work really.

2D BGM:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMnZite_lB0
3D BGM:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsq5STyuNAs
Note there is less “varied” timbres in the former.

Though I can’t really seem to understand your dislike for K-pop, which is usually synth heavy and incorporates a lot of elements from Electronic and Hip Hop music. Perfume is also an EDM unit with traces of 1980s synth-pop.
By only using text to describe post-Counterculture music, what makes Counterculture synth music different? I’m guessing the reason for post-Counterculture electronic music inferiority is when more songs started to show more tonal differentiation, due to the prominence of orchestras in OSTs of popular media.

Counterculture era song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Lwm8DtXyTs
Post-Counterculture era version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqlbS5fZxMw
Again, the less varied timbres in the former.

But what do you think? Do you validate my observation? If not, what do you think it really is?

Your question in its current form would require a book-length treatment to answer properly. I would recommend you break it up into more localized questions in order to suit the medium of forum discussion.

For now, I will only say that one of the most important sounds associated with Counterculture music is the:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthesizer

Quote
Synthesizers were initially viewed as avant-garde, valued by the 1960s psychedelic and countercultural scenes but with little perceived commercial potential. Switched-On Bach (1968), a bestselling album of Bach compositions arranged for synthesizer by Wendy Carlos, took synthesizers to the mainstream. They were adopted by electronic acts and pop and rock groups in the 1960s and 1970s and were widely used in 1980s music. Sampling, introduced with the Fairlight synthesizer in 1979, has influenced genres such as electronic and hip hop music.
...
However, debates were held about the appropriateness of synthesizers in baroque music, and according to the Guardian they were quickly abandoned in "serious classical circles".[30]

The rejection of the synthesizer by the Western classical music circle is evidence of its anti-Western potential.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthwave

Quote
Synthwave (also called retrowave, or futuresynth[5]) is an electronic music microgenre that is based predominantly on the music associated with the film soundtracks of action films, science fiction films, and horror films of the 1980s.[2] Other influences are drawn from the decade's art and video games.[3] Synthwave musicians often espouse nostalgia for 1980s culture and attempt to capture the era's atmosphere and celebrate it.[9]

Since the last conversation I had with 90sRF seems done, I got a question for this topic.

What was the evolution of post-WWII Counterculture music until the early 2000s (the music itself, not the MV or anything else next to the music)? Can it be explained like:
https://trueleft.createaforum.com/questions-debates/re-dress-decolonization/msg5862/#msg5862

I just want to understand what the basis is of Aryan/True Left music.

TIMBER TIMBRE - MAGIC ARROW
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icJOkfS7ImA

Quote

Lyrics:

Mystic palm, gem and tarot
A few escape your magic arrow
I saw you reel them in for miles
Each captivated crooked smile
And you know you can heal them all
Your double diamond disposition
Refractions of your center prism
Your magic arrow flies precision
And you saw it from that vantage point
Perimeter scratched on the nation's native hide
And we saw those christian clippers glide
Over white caps and white sails hide
Over white knuckles
And I was fine 'til I saw the pale horse ride
And open up it's gape across the ocean floor
You were fine 'til you saw the white rider take
And take some more
Our mother's milk double faro
A few escape your magic arrow
And with a Christ as bayonet
Oh you siphoned off the hellion's threats
And even in your ghastly visions
Your magic arrow flies precision
Whistles like a boiling potion
Charges like a locomotive
And you saw it from that vantage point
Perimeter scratched on the nation's native hide
And we saw those christian clippers glide
Over white caps and white sails and hide
Over white knuckles
And you were fine 'til you saw the pale horse ride
Open up it's gape across the ocean floor
You were fine 'til you saw the white rider take
And take some more

And no, this is not a request.
Hundreds of years of forced silence got a lot on my chest.
And we don't need your approval on our style of address.
Or style of the dress, I'll rock a head wrap and bulletproof vest.
And start my lyrical sermon with this Mother you guessed it.
Just so we're clear on who governs reproductive requests.
It's not up to anyone's opinion on how I protect it.
I'm part of collectives from Mali to Mecca getting bigger.
And our premiere gon be major no longer hidden figures.
We out to level the playing field for them young queens.
Coming for that wage gap til we recoup them Hidden figures.

If this a man's world we came here to grab the equivalent.
And watch the future reimagined by the hand of the feminine.

Sa-Roc feat David Banner: The Who? (Official Music Video) Produced by: Sol Messiah
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUBRq4yzDYc

Interestingly, when I was in the 5th grade and fresh off the boat I was instructed to give a presentation in front of my fifth grade class whilst pretending do be a famous American fore-father. I chose George Washington. My mothers friend, who was experienced in theater helped me put the presentation together. The presentation started with me asking the class, "I bet you don't know who I am?". Long story short, met that 5th grade teacher 20 plus years later somewhere, can't remember where exactly, but after a brief discussion the teacher confirmed to myself that he still shares the video of my presentation to class as an example of a successful presentation. I vividly remember standing next to a bunch of girls in my class at the lunch counter some days after the presentation and heard them over-saying things such as, "Can you believe he pulled that off", and, "What an amazing presentation", etc. I dated every girl in my 5th grade class, and have always felt bad for not dating the girl in the wheelchair that asked me out. One of the biggest regrets of my life. Digressing, the above song always reminds me of this past of mine...

So, did you enjoy our 5-month Sailor Moon music marathon? For me, it was a chance to return to many songs and BGMs that I actually own on CD (purchased during the 90s) but mostly haven't listened to recently. (I also plan to rewatch the series itself again soon, something I have wanted to do for a years but kept putting off.) Starting next month, I will take a break from posting music daily. I still have much more to share, so I am merely slowing down the pace.

Good music never becomes boring from relistening. This applies to a lot of Counterculture-era music but to almost no music since (including the reboot Crystal music). It was the Counterculture era which made Sailor Moon legendary, and that was the way the producers should have left it instead of rebooting. The 90s version is the version that we should always remember:

"I’ve been watching Sailor Moon for the first time, and I really like Usagi’s characterization. She’s lazy, but has a strong sense of justice that compels her to action despite her laziness. At least Crystal doesn’t have the typical 3D CG art style like Miraculous Ladybug, that popular Sailor Moon-inspired show that came out in 2015 and got really popular:

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miraculous_1.png

There have been attempts by certain Japanese studios to create cartoons in a 3D art style as well (including Studio Ghibli with their movies), but most of these attempts seem to have been ridiculed so far. In “the West” though, 3D CG animation is basically inescapable (either because 3D is genuinely preferred, or more likely because it’s easier and more cost effective than other forms of animation)

Anyways, I’ve been listening to this on repeat, because I’ve been extremely down in the dumps lately:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3ObWCtU6eI

I’m realizing that I’m not very useful in threads like these, because my music pool at any given time is very shallow. It’s hard to find good songs that inspire me emotionally, so I mostly just listen to the same few songs every single day on repeat, until I accidentally stumble upon another song that I like, and then that song usually replaces another song in my tiny pool, just so that I can retire it for a bit

Also, I’ve been watching Sailor Moon for the first time, and I really like Usagi’s characterization. She’s lazy, but has a strong sense of justice that compels her to action despite her laziness. I feel like that’s the perfect combination for a hero, because that type of person is much less likely to abuse the power bestowed upon them

Speaking of songs that inspire me, I really like Soldier of Love (Ai no Senshi). I’m feeling really battered down lately as I mentioned, so the lyrics make me feel a bit better

Also contrast the superiority of the 90s art style:

So, in this month we have successfully covered the music of Season 1 of Sailor Moon. Now what? Should we continue directly into another month covering the music of Season 2, and so on? Even if we don't do it at once, I will probably do it sooner or later, so why not do it all in one stretch?

Unfortunately, one part of the lyric video is wrong. It should be “sole survivor” instead of “soul surviver”

What I really wanted to focus on though, was the meaning of the song:

Quote
At its surface, this song is about Satan, and his descent to Hell (his "dive"). But according to Dio, there's a lot more to it, and the main character isn't really The Devil. "The song 'Holy Diver' is really about a Christ-figure, who on another place, not Earth, has done exactly the same as we've apparently experienced or were supposed to have experienced on Earth: dying for the sins of man so that man can start again and be cleansed and do it properly," … "So, the same thing happened on this other far-distant planet, and all the people on this planet are calling him the Holy Diver because he's about to go to another world to do what he did to the first: absolve them from their sins by having himself killed. And the people are saying to him, 'Don't go,' with innuendos of tigers and stripes and hearts and being eaten. It was meant to show just how selfish humanity is, that this one form of humanity on this one world said, 'No, don't go down there and save anybody else. Stay here, we need you, you are ours.'"

Quote
This song is an expression of Dio's rebellion against his Catholic upbringing, which he felt distorted the message of the religion. Instead of teaching by love, the nuns would keep order by smacking the kids with rulers and telling them they would go to Hell if they didn't behave.

I don’t know how anyone could listen to the song and arrive at the conclusion that it’s about the Devil. I like the song, because this descent or dive that the song’s narrative centers around, mirrors the Gnostic idea that fragments of light turned soldiers of God, willingly descended down into Yahweh’s creation to undo his scheme

On a related note, “The Holy Divers” would be a cool name for a Gnostic activist/paramilitary group, or even a circle of bodhisattvas

Welcome to Sailor Moon Month!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bBpiHJm3t0

As soon as I started looking through the playlists:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mm2UHRMKtic

it became apparent that there is far too much music from this gargantuan franchise to fit into just one month:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H18Pbn4Zix0

In fact, it is looking like just the Season 1 music could easily fill up a month!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77DJIdhBUEM

So perhaps we will have to do multiple months?

Did you enjoy Lupin III month? I chose to focus on the pre-2000 music because I feel that the closing decades of the 20th century is the period which Lupin authentically belongs in, and I believe that the songs and BGMs that I have chosen reflect this: these are sounds from an indescribably better era that ended a long time ago, and that's the way we should let it stay. Why force more and more unnecessary new additions to the Lupin musical repository year after year? Why not just relisten to it when it was not only at its purest and best, but effortlessly so? It never felt insufficient back then, so why should it ever? I present our finale:

So now instead of the announcement being serendipitously positioned between the two Lupin III songs sung by Sailor Moon voice actors, we now have the **** Pet Shop Boys gatecrashing the lineup. Oh well, at least get get a real-time microcosm of how there truly is no safe space from the ravages of Eurocentrism.....

So, did you enjoy Duet Month? While the songs we have listened to this month express the convoluted emotions that often come with romance, I want to close by reminding everyone that, although love may enable us to endure them, none of these are what true romantics actually ever aspired to, on the contrary they were everything that we wished we could have avoided. All we originally ever wanted was as simple a love story as possible. The purest romanticism is the capacity for timeless contentment in what the unromantic would consider boring. Because it is the anti-romantic who desire to be endlessly stimulated with novelty:

Next, as promised, we will be temporarily leaving postmodernity as we move onto wuxia duets. How do you use music to evoke the ancient world? There are many ways, but perhaps the simplest method is:

Male-female pairings are the most common because they provide a larger vocal space to work with. To illustrate this, time to bring back this classic pairing:

Welcome to Duet Month!

We will be starting off with pop duets, then sometime in the middle sidetracking to wuxia theme songs (where duets are even more common), and then returning to more pop duets to finish. Let's get straight into it!

To tie up another loose end, two of the Polygram grand collaboration became a couple in real life:

Wing was the song that got Chinen onto the Oricon Top 10 for the first time. Being in a toiletry commercial probably helped:

Commercials were frequently a factor in propelling performers to iconic status back in those days. I guess I should also repost:

I do. I have heard Chinen's music ever since you recommended it to me, including 'Wings'. The song has a good tone, the rhythm is bouncy and calming, there is some emotional impact, and it fits well with the MV. Whereas 'Be Yourself' took place by a field, 'Wings' took place by a beach. How much water is in it feels like one of those water-filled gravure presentations you posted.

"Perhaps it is the collaborative element itself? People working together for a special occasion have a different chemistry compared to people (e.g. a band/group) who work together all the time."

I guess when something exciting or energetic is done for a special occasion, it generates excitement. Similarly D&D, despite being rookies, only released one album (being low in quantity) leading them to be a unit to remember (being high in quality).

K-pop companies do not learn from it. Though companies like YG intend to be about quality over quantity, the amount of releases of energetic music does not generate the same quality enjoyment as D&D and the first three collaborations. Even their wardrobe is Eurocentric. That has not stopped spoiled K-pop fans from demanding Blackpink to release a comeback:

https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/blackpink-fans-protest-yg-entertainment-8546381/

"The next grand collaboration after these three was indescribably inferior, and my theory might account for why."

That is almost exactly like all those K-pop idol MVs. The party music, embellished sets, quantity classifications of cinematography and editing, and even their face shapes are low in quality. Though I do not have as much prior knowledge on the artists of the first three collaborations either, I would feel hyped when my favorite people are together. Even then, that should also be saved for special occasions.

I am learning a lot from our conversation and I feel inspired. However, since all good things must come to an end, should we end right here?
Title: Re: Recommended music to listen to

"Frankly, I wasn't sure what the term was for the two collabs that make them different from other cliche dance songs. What would make an energetic song work better than another energetic song? What did the collab have that other energetic songs do not have?"

Perhaps it is the collaborative element itself? People working together for a special occasion have a different chemistry compared to people (e.g. a band/group) who work together all the time. From the perspective of the audience, seeing them on-screen together might also generate a foundational excitement, similar to crossover excitement in fiction (when characters from one franchise appear in a different franchise). Even the MV editing staff might be affected by this and thus edit more attentively than usual (note in all three collaboration the use of extremely rapid cuts that however do not feel messy).

The next grand collaboration after these three was indescribably inferior, and my theory might account for why. Startup label Go East stupidly decided to use four rookies instead of using established artists. Since this was practically their first job, it did not feel like a special occasion for them, thus no special occasion chemistry. From the perspective of the audience, since we have no prior memory of them in solo work, there is no crossover excitement either - instead, we viewed them as if they were a group. The result? Sorry to make you listen to this crap (note also the slower cut rate in the MV, but still more messy feel - clearly even the editing staff were uninspired):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6GnOAdBsJM

(And what's with the choice of set? The other three chose sensible sets (street, ball court, disco) and this one went with..... canyons (wtf?!?))

Anyway, after this one, there were no more grand collaborations. Way to deflate the entire trend in one blow.....

"This is the case with Yeung, who clearly never even bothered to understand what the song is supposed to be about and is merely transferring the lyrics straight off the page into the mic via her mouth."

I understand. Yeung is innocent, but Kwan and Fan are more sensitive.

"Which is why for a few years she specialized in children's songs:"

I did not know that, but it makes sense.

"who found her true voice by attending a concert of her own idol:"

So in other words, the radical individualist approach works for vocal training.

"Having once found her true voice, she thereafter never changed it again, which is what I support."

I guess that is the closest thing to neoteny that vocal training can do.

"Where does this earliest one (Kwok being one of the participants) fall along your casualness spectrum compared to the other two?"

The earliest feels more casual than Polygram's collab in terms of how toned down it was, but Polygram's feels more casual for how much fun and emotion it feels to have. But either way, they are both less casual than Capital's later collab due to its emotion.

Frankly, I wasn't sure what the term was for the two collabs that make them different from other cliche dance songs. What would make an energetic song work better than another energetic song? What did the collab have that other energetic songs do not have?

"Kwan's voice has more innocence than Yeung's"

Sensitivity =/= innocence. It is possible to be innocent precisely due to lack of sensitivity, by not even noticing things that the more sensitive have already noticed. This is the case with Yeung, who clearly never even bothered to understand what the song is supposed to be about and is merely transferring the lyrics straight off the page into the mic via her mouth. She is innocent(!) of the meaning of the song. That is not a compliment.

"Fan's who sounds like she retained it from childhood"

Which is why for a few years she specialized in children's songs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21u1_SRIkyI

from which she got her iconic concert-finisher:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StAJmSX5Jdc

"Vocal training and care should not try to change one's voice or 'improve' it, but to prevent damage to their current voice.

I disagree. Some of the ultimately best singers started off with a voice that was unable to fully express the emotions they had inside them. In such cases they benefited from the change to their voice that happened during their career. The most legendary example is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nz5eli-NZ1M

who found her true voice by attending a concert of her own idol:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtDca-6nGBQ

during which as a fan in the audience she cheered so loudly for the duration of the concert that the next day her voice had changed and she was finally able to sing the way she wanted to in her mind. Thus she credits her idol for magically gifting her true voice to her through his music. (Miraculous anecdotes such as these abounded during the Counterculture era.) Having once found her true voice, she thereafter never changed it again, which is what I support.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnYpl2Ef3f4

Of course I agree that if you are fortunate enough to start your career with a voice that already matches your inner personality, you should not try to expand it. But not every singer is so fortunate. If they were not allowed to find their true voice, they would have to adjust their songs to suit their starting voice, which would mean their songs become less sincere as well!

"the vibe felt more casual and day-like than the dance songs by Amuro and Kwok. The video also suits the song. D&D also feels more casual for dance music. Why is that?"

Actually, that one itself was Polygram's response to the following earlier collaboration by Capital:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmR5LUICCaY

which then incited Capital to counter-respond with its second one. Where does this earliest one (Kwok being one of the participants) fall along your casualness spectrum compared to the other two?

"See what I mean?"

I see that even though Kwan's voice has more innocence than Yeung's, Kwan still has a hint of maturity compared to Fan's who sounds like she retained it from childhood. That gives me a thought. Vocal training and care should not try to change one's voice or 'improve' it, but to prevent damage to their current voice. On the other hand, could her vegetarianism be the reason for her voice?

"Kudo responded deftly with a single whose A-side demonstrated that she could beat the dance-freaks at their own speciality any day she wanted to:

...

more importantly whose B-side pointed back to what truly timeless music sounds like:"

Though Kudo's A-side was more organic than Amuro's song while still being danceable, we can judge the emotion of the B-side better since it does not have an added dance beat.

"since you like energetic dance songs, what do you think of the following two (rivalling) grand collaborations?"

I remember when you posted it when you were contrasting them to K-pop music. Here's my comment on them. Along with the first song, 'Wou Bom Ba', the vibe felt more casual and day-like than the dance songs by Amuro and Kwok. The video also suits the song. D&D also feels more casual for dance music. Why is that?

As for the second song 'Ai Qing Shang Lian La La La', it was more casual and organic and had more emotion than the first one.

Here is something else I thought. Similar to how ballads are more timeless than dance songs, acoustic music is also more timeless than electronic music. I do not know how fair it is to judge instrumentation since all instruments have their individualities, but electronic instruments needs more energy and thus being more complex and with less quality than acoustic instruments. Post-Renaissance instruments like the harpsichord and piano are also less convenient than pre-Renaissance instruments. I assume instruments like the harp also became heavy and inconvenient by the Renaissance. The DAWless trend uses electronic instruments that are smaller and more convenient, which probably explained the Synth-pop movement of the 1980s:

Quote
The emergence of synth-pop has been described as "perhaps the single most significant event in melodic music since Mersey-beat". By the 1980s synthesizers had become much cheaper and easier to use. After the definition of MIDI in 1982 and the development of digital audio, the creation of purely electronic sounds and their manipulation became much simpler. Synthesizers came to dominate the pop music of the early 1980s, particularly through their adoption by bands of the New Romantic movement.

So in order for a culture to happen, it must be accessible. It is a part of:

"The first singer sounded more motherly while the second singer, Kwan, sounded more childlike. There is more emotion and innocence in Kwan's voice."

There is no doubt that Kwan excels in vocal sensitivity, but childlike is not how I perceive her singing; on the contrary, I perceive a weariness embedded in her sensitivity. In the above cover she only applies it partially, but I still get the feeling that she is reminiscing a more innocent time in the past, as opposed to being innocent in the present. In her own work she goes all the way with this sentiment:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/human-evolution/facial-aryanism/msg17680/#msg17680

However, this difference is inadequately highlighted so long as she is placed alongside singers who do not even have the elementary vocal sensitivity to work with in the first place. What we really need is to contrast her against another singer on a similar level of vocal sensitivity but expressing a more childlike sentiment. I might just have the perfect example:

"Though I am a fan of energetic and danceable music, there is something about a good quality ballad that feels magical."

"This was the norm for thousands of years before recording existed!"

This gives me a thought. Individual with fewer talents contribute more to their talents than an individual with more talents do to their talents. One reason why Nakata's music (including his songs made for Perfume) sounds mediocre is because he does more than just music. Not to recommend anymore music from him, but in one of his 'golden rules' at 6:33 (note the low quality aesthetics) (Mute your audio if you need to.):

https://youtu.be/5WMyjU5RweU?t=393

So in other words, he does not even contribute that much to music. You can tell from the art direction, the overly compressed production and even his clothes that his aesthetics are spiritless. Wagner on the other hand did not intend to create his total artwork by himself. Hitler did not intend to create his whole NS state by himself either, as he simply approved of the architecture, uniforms, art, propaganda, politics, etc.

"Case study:

...

steamrolled for eternity by:"

The first singer sounded more motherly while the second singer, Kwan, sounded more childlike. There is more emotion and innocence in Kwan's voice.

"Even more fun is when you commission a song from a composer, release it:

...

and then the composer himself(!) releases his own infinitely superior version to show the world how it was meant to sound:"

I would be happy to comment on the composition since I love compositions. The first version was a good simple start but it did need improvement. As for the second version, it sounded like it was grown out of the composer's imagination. Though I am a fan of energetic and danceable music, there is something about a good quality ballad that feels magical.

Something I learned about art. Simpler aesthetics are quicker to create. But when a relatively simple aesthetic takes the same amount of time to create as a relatively complex aesthetic, the former has more quality than the latter.

"Could the same be said for performers to concentrate on performing?"

This was the norm for thousands of years before recording existed!

"What about those who are required to get the effect by a due date?"

If you have to release a certain number of songs by the deadline but you have a really good one that you want to work on more, you can just release a different one (mediocre if need be) for the deadline instead and hold onto the good one for a subsequent release, thereby gaining additional time to work on it.

The main point is, once you release, there's no taking it back: you are declaring that this is the best version of this particular song that you are able to produce. In other words, if someone else then covers it better than you, you are permanently owned. Case study:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm0QAEC2IDE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEqfLnbm3RQ

Could the same be said for performers to concentrate on performing?

"Some people like to try over and over until they get exactly the effect they want."

What about those who are required to get the effect by a due date? Because that was the point I was trying to make. Rather than practicing over and over until they get their effect by their own pace, some artists are challenged to get their effect by a certain deadline. If I am wrong, explain.

"gig"

There is also a difference between recording and live performance. These days it is expected that you have to do both, but back then it was a viable path for some musicians to be literal recording artists who concentrated primarily on recording:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsx0DY4eOCU

And why not? Some people like to try over and over until they get exactly the effect they want. It is an artistically respectable attitude! Film actors are not less respectable than stage actors, so why should studio musicians be less respectable than stage musicians?

Here is my reply.

Those were sincere songs. I liked the third song, the last build of momentum. One thing I see in the music you like is that they were easy to follow along. You cannot get that with most of today's electronic music. Even Counterculture electronic music was that simple. This reminds me of a quote about northern and southern climates:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/human-evolution/temperature-effects/msg20860/#msg20860

Quote
Quote
People in the north had to evolve not just the intelligence to build shelter, make warm clothes, and invent weapons for killing big game. They had to think ahead, and this is one of the most important human traits.

...

How much better would the world be with less thinking ahead?

From that logic, a good song requires less deadline-based rehearsals. Deadlines reflects an artist's skill but limits their imagination. I believe a true rehearsal should not have a due date to complete by, but rather be a lifestyle. That way the artist/performer can go by their own pace and will also feel more prepared when a gig comes. Not only that but it will feel less like work and more like a hobby (contrast with an artist/performer who rehearses just for one gig).

What do you guys think? This topic does not have to be between me and 90sRF. It could use other people too.

I will henceforth when no one is replying just be posting whatever I am listening to myself at the time, thereby enabling regular addition of new content. Nevertheless, feel free to interrupt at any time with requests for elaboration from previous posts (no matter how far back!) and I will be more than happy to digress to go in-depth on particular artists for as long as there is interest, or connect smoothly from one to another (rivalries, collaborations, etc.) as the discussion may take us.

Yamaguchi was most certainly not specifically a singer. Her Akai series of dramas dominated the 70s:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_PhyXBHVhk

The heroine archetype that she established would go on to be imitated for many years after her early retirement*. (Only Minamino (to her credit) ignored it and thus belatedly brought in the 80s archetype.) The way I would describe it is that it took Kudo and Minamino combined to dethrone Yamaguchi, the former displacing her musically and the latter dramatically. This in itself is a tribute to Yamaguchi's outsized impact in pop culture.

(* This was also Yamaguchi's wisest move, as it meant the world would never have to watch her decline.)

"Minamino does not even come close to Kudo in terms of strictly musical significance. The ones to meaningfully compare to Kudo (the Purple Queen) are her predecessors Yamaguchi (the White Queen), Matsuda (the Red Queen) and Nakamori (the Black Queen). Of course Kudo remains my personal favourite among these."

I see. If there is one thing I can learn from that quote, it is to judge individuals of a similar association and not to judge different associations. Whereas Kudo shares a common result with Minamino, Asaka and Nakayama (Four Divas), Kudo shares a common cause with Yamaguchi, Matsuda and Nakamori (who were more specifically singers), so comparing the difference between Kudo and the former three is not as effective as comparing Kudo with the latter three.

"I know you would listen to Minamino and Kudo"

I listen to Minamino's Sukeban-Deka-related songs only:

whereas I listen to all of Kudo's early (2000 and before) solo work:

and am happy to recommend more here if you or others want me to.

Minamino does not even come close to Kudo in terms of strictly musical significance. The ones to meaningfully compare to Kudo (the Purple Queen) are her predecessors Yamaguchi (the White Queen), Matsuda (the Red Queen) and Nakamori (the Black Queen) each of whom was at one time the top female singer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOosQoScFfU

But considering total significance in pop culture as a whole, Minamino easily catches up on account of Sukeban Deka II, which is the definitive epic of Counterculture-era Japan:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/counterculture-era/the-archetype-of-the-warrior-how-films-help-empower-us-all/msg18991/#msg18991

compared to which Kudo's best drama:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/counterculture-era/is-counterculture-still-alive/msg19002/#msg19002

is decidedly minor in impact.

Overall, both are deservedly among the greatest icons of that era.

"but would the quote mean you would listen to Nakayama and Asaka?"

I listen to Asaka's Sukeban-Deka-related songs only, though her own season (III) sucked (her best contribution to the franchise was in Minamino's movie - I just watch that and her own movie and pretend III never happened). In my opinion, she rode Minamino's coattails to fame.

Nakayama I proudly avoid like the plague.

Something I read on the Wikipedia for Sukeban Deka actor Yoko Minamino is that she was considered as one of the shitennou (others in bold):

Along with Shizuka Kudo, Miho Nakayama, and Yui Asaka, Minamino was considered one of the Four Divas (四天王, Shitennō) of the time until she temporarily suspended her career in 1992.

But if you would like to tell me, what have you listened to at the moment?

How would you contrast modern South Korean music with Counterculture examples? Would artists like Seo Taiji and SM Entertainment's 90s artists (e.g. H.O.T, S.E.S.) be the examples. If not, would the examples be Trot or something else?

I actually would have preferred Lufkin to have never got involved (though with Komuro being her boss she didn't really have a choice) with 1998 FIFA World Cup music:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLKBqhEp_uM

which tried to be epic (in particular, to cater to Western audiences) and ended up being a pretentious embarassment, comparing especially unfavourably with:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J__OgqG1CXs

which set out to make fun of the whole event (catering purely to local audiences) and ended up becoming a festive classic. This goes back to what I was saying about how catering to Western audiences never ends well (but laughing at them - note the MV's inclusion of deliberately excessive quantities of Western architecture, but shot in humour, to say nothing of opening the arrangement with the French national anthem - can work wonders!).

Then the quality of their music stood out.

"I don't think this is a good comparison. Serious artists typically need a lot of privacy. Arranging for them to live together would lead to all kinds of extra trouble."

I see. It does seem less stressful for an artist/viewer to be alone, that way they can only deal with the art. As for me when I have space and listen to music or enjoy art, I do have a vivid imagination, and when I sense something that does not fit in with my music and imagination, I feel quite disturbed.

Maybe people destined to be artists probably shouldn't have roommates, that way their spiritual quality improves at their pace.

"D&D has more emotion and simplicity in their music, and not to mention it's much neater and higher quality than Perfume's music."

It is probably a good thing that D&D ended before the Counterculture era ended. Had it tried to continue, it might have been pressured to adapt to subsequent trends. As it is, at least we can remember it as an untainted phenomenon marking the last few years before the collapse.

I don't think this is a good comparison. Serious artists typically need a lot of privacy. Arranging for them to live together would lead to all kinds of extra trouble. Indeed this is why they need managers/agents/PAs/etc. to keep them from having to interact with the outside world more than is necessary.

D&D, though where that sexist Eurocentrist Nakata got its influence for Perfume's "Techno-pop" concept, sounded much different from Perfume. D&D has more emotion and simplicity in their music, and not to mention it's much neater and higher quality than Perfume's music.

There's a practice in Western classical music that has revived in the EDM scene (which probably came from Aristotelean philosophy). Tension and release. Where it is the duty of a viewer to judge art for what it demonstrates, tension and release (also known as the build and drop in EDM culture) is an auditory illustration that makes it difficult to judge the demonstration, which lies the artist's intent to manipulate our reactions (Jewish tendency). On the other hand, I'd prefer it if it was done to demonstrate a song's value or to narrate a play or movie (which most of the time, it doesn't).

D&D, despite their music's genre being EDM, had less tension and release, which makes it easier to judge the emotion in their music.

"I like this approach (as opposed to everyone doing their own ads) as [sharing ad space] generates an atmosphere of solidarity between artists."

Not to mention it requires less work to put up. Living with roommates demonstrate the same purpose since it builds an alliance between the people living while requiring less work to live in (which both practices suit well for:

).

They often shared ad space with Chinen back in those days. Example:

I like this approach (as opposed to everyone doing their own ads) as it generates an atmosphere of solidarity between artists.

Since you gave examples of both Western and non-Western games in both Counterculture and post-Counterculture eras here:

The same divergence can be seen in wrestling games.

1990s Western:

1990s non-Western:

2010s Western:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqCmqmS10So

2010s non-Western:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5XjVIJif_w

What would be your examples in music (both Western and non-Western music from both 1990s and 2010s)?

Edit: Since you were mentioning wrestling as a game genre, I was thinking of suggesting a music genre. For example, Electronic Dance Music.

"back in the 90s I mainly relied on radio and TV shows, as well as sampling booths in CD stores."

What in today's time would you say works like radio, TV and CD stores where the person runs it for the viewers?

"does Drill have that 'spirit' you described in pre-colonial aesthetic superiority?"

Whet Moser wrote that Keef's songs are "lyrically, rhythmically, and emotionally diminished, which is why they sound so airless and claustrophobic ... It's not even fatalistic, because that would imply a self-consciousness, a moral consideration, that isn't there in the lyrics. It just is, over and over again."[25]

"If going to the country isn't your way of finding good artists, then how do you find good artists?"

Nowadays with YouTube etc. it is easy to find most stuff online, but back in the 90s I mainly relied on radio and TV shows, as well as sampling booths in CD stores.

"MAX (Chinen's girl group)"

No.

"Wait was it the same Rina?"

There is no Rina in MAX. There is a Lina and a Reina:

neither of whom are the same person as Chinen:

The closest Chinen came to collaborating with MAX was a compilation:

which wasn't much good anyway.

Wait was it the same Rina? Like Perfume, Chinen went to Okinawa Actors School. The difference is that Chinen was Counterculture.

But Perfume isn't to blame for their music. The blame is their producer, Yasutaka Nakata. Perfume has had some songs that weren't made by Nakata, which were 'Omajinai Perori', 'Kareshi Bochuchu' and 'AkihabaLove'.

BTW I'm listening to a 1996 album by MAX (Chinen's girl group), and it's good.

So if YMO appealed to their home area than overseas, then they could've appealed better to your taste? Ok, so I guess if I want to listen to new music, then Drill and Jersey Club (the public aesthetic in NY) can be my new music. No, I actually do remember liking Drill music, and I still kinda like it. It's energetic, fast pace and clubby, except does Drill have that 'spirit' you described in pre-colonial aesthetic superiority?

I'm also thinking I have to go to Japan in order to know what artists are actually better. If going to the country isn't your way of finding good artists, then how do you find good artists?

"Do you consider Yellow Magic Orchestra to be Counterculture?"

This is complicated. In terms of motivation:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Magic_Orchestra

Quote
they were "tired" of Japanese musicians imitating Western and American music at the time and so they wanted to "make something very original from Japan."[49]

but this ironically made YMO more widely known in the West (due to implicitly Orientalist audiences seeking exoticism):

Quote
performing to sold-out crowds during tours in the United States and Europe.[6] The single "Computer Game" had sold 400,000 copies in the United States[6] and reached No. 17 in the UK Charts.

than many of their contemporaries whose more locally limited audience led to them ultimately typifying Jpop to a greater extent in the long-term. This is a recurring phenomenon throughout non-Western pop culture:

1) A producer in a Westernized country tries to be non-Western.
2) Orientalist consumers in the West like the product because it (trying to be non-Western) feels exotic.
3) Eurocentrist local consumers observe the producer's prestige in the West and consequently overrate the producer.
4) The producer, in order to maintain their overrated status, ends up catering more to consumers in the West than to local consumers.
5) The local consumers (continuing to overrate the producer) accept this and hence end up adapting their tastes to match those of their counterparts in the West.
6) Thus the producer who set out to be non-Western ends up Orientalizing the local consumer market instead of genuinely nationalizing it.

To admit it, you have a better taste in aesthetics than me. Last night I was confused because Perfume was the only artist I would listen to, due to how familiar I was with them. Now embodying your taste, it's kinda torture. But I don't know where to start fresh.

The artist you posted admittedly sounded awesome due to how organic it sounds, but it's not my style. I like a lot of disco and synth-pop and their derivatives. I also like pop vocal artists (specifically groups) that dance. K-pop does count, but it's too Turanized. If I was mentioning Counterculture-era examples, Michael and Janet Jackson are my favorite artists. Their dances are fun. Their music is unifying. Their concepts are creative. Their wardrobe is neat. Do you consider Yellow Magic Orchestra to be Counterculture?

Thank you for your fair opinion. I'm always willing to improve.

"these are my examples"

I painfully listened to all of them and came out the other side proud to not share your tastes.

"would you rather prefer the Counterculture influenced examples where Electro House progressivism didn't influence the composition yet?"

I do not consider any of your examples to be discernibly Counterculture-influenced.

As far as I am concerned, the last respectable Jpop artist was:

Romantic magnum opus (healing my faith in true love since 1998):

Moving my examples from:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/ancient-world/the-superiority-of-pre-colonial-aesthetics/

Quote
Definitely not for enjoyment. Because it sounds spiritless (spirit as described above):

Polyrhythm does sound overproduced with its instrumentation not sounding clear or simple, but Polyrhythm was their most famous song (released in the late 2000s when Counterculture was almost completely transitioned), and I remember listening it wasn't my most favorite. However, these are my examples, starting with the Counterculture influenced songs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ7Aubpgyto

Their outfits were simpler and in unity. There were 3D graphics in the backdrop, but it's not that much realistic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMlbl-cAHGk

The images in 0:09 , 0:55 and 2:35 were Counterculture influenced. Others weren't.

This modern example isn't so perfect, but it got me into Perfume. Besides it is a little less grandiose than Polyrhythm:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99Ux_h7aeOM

Their outfits can improve but it's still possible to emulate. Also that the villain was wearing a Western suit.

In faith to your anti-progressive movement, would you rather prefer the Counterculture influenced examples where Electro House progressivism didn't influence the composition yet?
