Title: Ethnonepotism

It's OK for admissions to be "white":

https://www.yahoo.com/news/harvard-admissions-data-shows-america-030249515.html

Quote
America’s most elite colleges and universities really don’t want the public to take a peek behind the curtain and get a better understanding of who gets admitted and why. And it’s not for the reasons you might think.

The urban legend endures that any Latino or African-American who applies to one of these ultra-selective schools can write their own ticket. But the truth is, the people who get the lion’s share of those tickets, who issue the tickets, and who, in fact, run the ticket booth are white.

The real pigs at the trough are white people who have connections, make donations or otherwise encourage wealthy alumni boosters to send more checks. T’was always thus.

A new study proves what the relatively few students of color who will ever have the chance to attend selective colleges and universities have long suspected: Despite what people call “imposter syndrome”—i.e., the insecurity that some Latinos and African Americans feel about whether they deserve the opportunities they’ve been afforded—they aren't imposters at all. Far from it. Rather, they’re among the most deserving of admission.

The numbers show that, for the most part, students of color had to work harder in high school to get into these elite schools than white ones with hook-ups, deep pockets or alumni pedigrees.

Moreover, in many cases, this pattern will continue throughout their entire professional lives. Merit only gets you so far.
...
Researchers from Duke University, the University of Georgia, and the University of Oklahoma dove into those documents and analyzed something that looms large in the admissions process of elite schools yet is rarely talked about: admissions preferences for recruited athletes, legacies, those on the “dean’s interest list” (read: donors), and children of faculty and staff—a group collectively referred to by the unwieldy acronym of ALDC).

Using data from the Harvard lawsuit on 166,727 U.S. applicants to Harvard between 2009-2014, the professors did a good job of breaking down who has been getting in and why they’ve been getting in.

According to their findings, more than 43 percent of the white students admitted were ALDC. But the share for African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos was less than 16 percent. Furthermore, the research shows, roughly three-quarters of white ALDC admits would have been rejected if not for their ALDC status. Finally, eliminating preferences for athletes and legacies would make the pool of admitted students much less white.

As a Mexican American who went to Harvard, I hear only one thing in these findings: vindication.

You see, Latino and African American students who go to Harvard, or other highly selective college and universities, tend to arrive on campus with a ringing in their ears. It’s the sound they heard in high school of jealous white classmates sniping that if they hadn’t been people of color, they wouldn’t have gotten in.
...
When I walked through Johnston Gate and into Harvard Yard in the Fall of 1985, I was one of just 35 Mexican Americans in a class of about 1,600 undergraduates. That’s only about 2 percent. Add in Puerto Ricans, Cuban-Americans, Colombians and others, and the total number of Latinos might have reached 5 percent.

Most of us were straight-A valedictorians, student body presidents, self-starters who had rocketed through high school kicking ass and taking names.

Meanwhile, 75 percent of Harvard’s student body was at that point still white.

Which reminds me of the second sound that people of color often hear in our heads as we make our way through the college experience. As we associate with our white classmates, it sometimes occurs to us that some of these people aren’t all that. A lot of them don’t seem that smart. They don’t spend a lot of time in the library, and yet they walk around campus with an impenetrable air of confidence. Indeed, some appear to have simply skated through life with help from their parents, from society, and ultimately from the admissions office.

Now thanks to a very important study, my friends and I know that we weren’t imagining things. There were, in fact, some imposters on campus. And now we know who they were.

To put it another way, Harvard's admissions policy is as un-American as is its architecture:

Watching European nations open their arms to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians in less than a week, the father of three can't help but compare their fates.

"We are wondering, why were Ukrainians welcome in all countries while we, Syrian refugees, are still in tents and remain under the snow, facing death, and no one is looking to us?" he told Reuters in a refugee centre where 25 families are sheltered on the edge of the Mediterranean city of Sidon.

In the Arab world, where 12 million Syrians have been uprooted by war, critics ranging from Hariri to activists and cartoonists contrast the Western reaction to the refugee crisis triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine with the way Europe sought to hold back Syrian and other refugees in 2015.

Some recalled images of refugees walking for days in harsh weather, or losing lives in perilous sea crossings as they tried to breach Europe's borders.

On Monday, four days after Russia launched its attack, the European Union said at least 400,000 refugees had entered the bloc from Ukraine, which has land borders with four EU states.

Millions more are expected and the EU is preparing measures which would offer temporary residence permits as well as access to employment and social welfare - a swift opening of its doors at odds with its response to wars in Syria and elsewhere.

Where are the usual voices complaining that flooding the market with labour will lower wages, and that providing social services to people who never paid taxes into the system is foolish? They are suddenly all looking the other way now that the beneficiaries are "whites".

French professor drives 1,200 miles to offer his house to Ukrainian refugees

VYSNE NEMECKE, Slovakia (Reuters) - When Russia invaded Ukraine last week French professor Yves Gineste didn't think twice - he set off on a four-day drive to the eastern edge of Slovakia to offer his Perpignan house to refugees.

Bearing a cardboard sign seeking "One family for a house in France, travel and house free", he registered with a charity at Vysne Nemecke, a crossing on the Slovakia-Ukraine border.

A few hours later he was helping 26-year-old manicurist Nastia Kiselyova, along with a friend travelling with her daughter and niece, load their belongings into his camper van prior to heading back the around 2,000 km (1,200 miles) to southwest France.

On hearing of the invasion "I could not believe it," the 70-year-old, a professor in medical research who works six months of the year at Kyoto University and normally rents the Perpignan house out, told Reuters.

There have been Afghan, Syrian and other refugees in and around Slovakia for a long time. Why didn't Gineste offer his house to any of them all this time?

A Romanian restaurant serves up to 100 free meals a day to Ukrainian refugees — its staff often break down in tears over the escalating crisis
...
In addition to providing free meals to Ukrainian refugees, Cristea said she organized a donation of food cans, bottled water, and packaged sweets for them. These efforts have been matched with "hundreds or thousands of activities of this kind" all across Romania, she added.

"There are many that are doing more, especially in northern Romania, where most of the Ukrainians arrived," Cristea said.

Does anyone want to guess whether or not they treated Afghan etc. refugees similarly? Does anyone want to guess why not?

If we had been treating Muslim or “Middle Eastern” migrants like this from the beginning, I would wager that there’d currently be a lot less of the “extremism” and general exclusionary attitudes that rightists accuse these migrants of. But as usual, rightists prefer to unwittingly create the problem/feedback loop, and then blame it on someone else.

VESZPREM, Hungary, March 9 (Reuters) - Two days after arriving from the bombarded outskirts of Kyiv following a gruelling journey, 24-year-old Ukrainian Olga Yasnopolska signed a contract to work for a large German automotive parts supplier in western Hungary.

Meanwhile, "non-white" refugees are frequently prohibited from getting jobs despite having been in a country for years.

Quote
Yasnopolska, who worked for the railways in Ukraine, said the job contract gave her some sense of security.

"It's a relief that we have somewhere to stay and now I have a job, and we are in safety," she said, with a tired, faint smile.

Translation: it's OK to be a "white" refugee.

Quote
She also hopes to find a job soon that will allow her to take care of her baby.

I am sure she will get one rather quickly. All the same people who deliberately make life miserable for "non-whites" will go out of their way to help her.

Quote
'UKRAINIAN-FRIENDLY JOBS'

In the wake of the European Union's 2015 migration crisis some eastern members, led by Poland and Hungary, refused to take in people fleeing war and poverty, saying an influx from Africa and the Middle East would threaten their Christian traditions.

But hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians had been working in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic even before the current exodus.

Since last year, companies across the manufacturing, information technology and construction sectors in the region have been jostling to attract employees as their economies rebounded fast from the COVID-19 induced slump.

Czech job vacancies climbed to a record high of nearly 364,000 in February. Romanian vacancies reached 45,600 in the fourth quarter of 2021, up by 10,000 in annual terms.

In Poland, which has been a top destination for Ukrainian workers for years and has received more than 1.3 million refugees since the war began, employers reported 116,500 job vacancies in February.

Work agencies and companies are now hoping to tap into the large pool of refugees, trying to arrange accommodation for Ukrainian workers' family members and their children.

None of which they did with "non-white" refugees.

Quote
"This 1 million women with children is in reality about half a million people who can actually enter the workforce and the Polish economy will be able to absorb them easily within a few, three or four months," said Krzysztof Inglot of the Employers of Poland Association.

You did not say this when the refugees were "non-white".

Quote
BestJobs, a Romanian recruitment platform with 32,000 open positions, has introduced a "Ukrainian friendly jobs" tag.

Jitka Souckova, marketing director of Grafton Recruitment in Prague, said there were many jobs in manufacturing or logistics, where Ukrainians could work even without speaking Czech.

Yet the frequently stated reason for not letting "non-white" refugees get jobs was because they were not fluent in the local language. Supposedly, a worker lacking fluency in the local language would endanger the other workers in case of fire hazards and other emergencies. What happened to all that?

Quote
Gabor Berta, head of the Man at Work temp agency office in Veszprem, through which Yasnopolska found her job, said the biggest problem was finding accommodation for all the Ukrainian workers they have placed and their families.

Meanwhile, many "non-white" refugees are still living in tents, and the camps are bulldozed once every few months.

Quote
"This situation is different," he said. "Here you cannot say to the Ukrainian employee that 'I am sorry I have too many workers now', or 'sorry we need to halt production, please can you go home'. Now, they cannot go home."

You say all of this just fine to "non-whites". The situation is certainly different when the refugees are "whites'.

Two Refugees, Both on Poland's Border. But Worlds Apart.

KUZNICA, Poland — On the day war broke out in Ukraine, Albagir, a 22-year-old refugee from Sudan, was lying on the frozen forest floor at the gateway to Poland, trying to stay alive.

Drones sent by the Polish border patrol were looking for him. So were helicopters. It was night, with subzero temperatures and snow everywhere. Albagir, a pre-med student, and a small band of African refugees were trying to sneak into Poland, down to the last few shriveled dates in their pockets.

“We were losing hope,” he said.

That same night in a small town near Odesa, Katya Maslova, 21, grabbed a suitcase and her tablet, which she uses for her animation work, and jumped with her family into a burgundy Toyota RAV4. They rushed off in a four-car convoy with eight adults and five children, part of the frantic exodus of people trying to escape war-torn Ukraine.

“At that point, we didn’t know where we were going,” she said.

Over the next two weeks, what would happen to these two refugees crossing into the same country at the same time, both about the same age, could not stand in starker contrast. Albagir was punched in the face, called racial slurs and left in the hands of a border guard who, Albagir said, brutally beat him and seemed to enjoy doing it. Katya wakes up every day to a stocked fridge and fresh bread on the table, thanks to a man she calls a saint.

Ethnonepotist =/= saint

Quote
Their disparate experiences underscore the inequalities of Europe’s refugee crisis. They are victims of two very different geopolitical events but are pursuing the same mission — escape from the ravages of war. As Ukraine presents Europe with its greatest surge of refugees in decades, many conflicts continue to burn in the Middle East and Africa. Depending on which war a person is fleeing, the welcome will be very different.

From the instant they cross into Poland, Ukrainian refugees such as Maslova are treated to live piano music, bottomless bowls of borscht and, often, a warm bed. And that’s just the beginning. They can fly for free all across Europe on Hungary’s Wizz Air. In Germany, crowds line up at train stations, waving Ukrainian flags. All European Union countries now allow them to stay for up to three years.

Watching all this on a TV in a safe house in th

e Polish countryside, where it’s too dangerous for him to even step outside, Albagir, who asked that his last name not be used because he crossed the border illegally, said he was almost in a state of shock.

“Why don’t we see this caring and this love? Why?” he asked. “Are Ukrainians better than us? I don’t know. Why?”

No, you are better than them. Their ancestral civilization created almost all of the problems in the world today:

etc.

Your ancestral civilization did not. But they are "white", and their ancestral civilization thinks it's OK to be "white". That is why.

Quote
What Albagir experienced has been repeated countless times, from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel, as European governments have made it difficult for migrants from Africa and the Middle East to enter their countries — sometimes using excessive force to keep them out.
...
“This is the first time we are seeing such contrast between the treatment of different groups of refugees,” said Camille Le Coz, a migration analyst in Brussels, who added that Europeans see Ukrainians as being “like us.”
...
Maslova’s family walked into the kitchen and saw the three-course meal that their hosts had prepared for them, and cried. They stepped into the bathroom to a row of brand-new toothbrushes, soaps and shampoos, and cried. They saw freshly washed sheets, towels and blankets lined up on their beds, and cried.
...
A few nights later, while Maslova and her family were admiring a stack of toys that their hosts brought for the children, Albagir and three men with whom he was traveling were arrested. They had made it across the Polish border undetected, but the driver they hired to get them to Germany forgot to turn on his headlights and was stopped. Albagir said Polish police officers stole their SIM cards and power banks; disabled their phones (so they couldn’t call for help); and drove them back to the place they dreaded: the forest.

At least 19 people have frozen to death in recent months trying to get into Poland after Polish border guards pushed them back into this forest, human rights groups say.

Polish officials insisted it was not their fault.
...
“Go! Go!” the Polish guards yelled at Albagir’s group, shoving them at gunpoint toward a barbed-wire fence in an isolated part of the forest, Albagir said. The guards threw one of the men into the fence so hard that he sliced open his hand, Albagir said. When interviewed, he showed a gash mark between his fingers.
...
“He punched us, he kicked us, he threw us down, he hit us with sticks,” Albagir said.

He said there was one light-skinned Kurd detained in the garage with them whom the soldier didn’t touch.
...
For Maslova’s family, the treatment just gets better and better. Poterek enrolled her brother and sister in a primary school — the Polish government has extended free education and health care to Ukrainian refugees.

“It seems like the whole country is slightly bending the rules for Ukrainians,” said Maslova, after a doctor refused to accept payment for a visit.

...
Last Thursday, Janusz Poterek spoke to a friend about finding Maslova a job as a translator.

That same afternoon, Albagir and the others made it to a safe house in Warsaw. Once again, they were told not to step outside.

When do we nuke Poland?

https://us.yahoo.com/news/does-the-ukrainian-refugee-response-expose-a-european-double-standard-experts-weigh-in-212817039.html

Quote
The reception of Ukrainian refugees by European countries has been vastly different from previous refugee crises where European countries were largely resistant to being a safe haven for those escaping persecution, including the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis, where since 2015 more than 1 million Syrians have sought refuge in Europe with little to no support.

“It's a striking difference,” Lamis Abdelaaty, a professor of political science at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, told Yahoo News.
...
some critics see a double standard in how Ukrainian refugees are being treated compared with asylum seekers from other countries.

Poland, which has accepted more than 60% of the 3 million Ukrainian refugees, was a big detractor of Syrian refugees just a few years ago. The leader of Poland's conservative party and current deputy prime minister, Jarosław Kaczyński, has been one of the most outspoken critics against refugees. In 2017, he said that accepting Syrians would be dangerous and would "completely change our culture and radically lower the level of safety in our country."

Now European leaders are praising the continent’s largely unified response.

“The response by Europe has been remarkable,” the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said in a statement.
...
“Since the Syria crisis erupted more than 10 years ago, we’ve seen that there was a high level of reluctancy from Europeans to share the burden amongst themselves,” she said.

Abdelaaty also notes a striking difference in the framing of the Syrian refugee crisis and the Ukrainian refugee crisis.

“In 2016, [the Syrian refugee influx] was framed as a huge ‘crisis for Europe,’ and it was a crisis for how European countries were going to respond to this,” she said, adding that Syrians were labeled as migrants, not refugees, as a way to “delegitimize their request for protection.”

Abdelaaty believes that the Ukrainian crisis is being framed in such a way that leads others to have empathy for those fleeing the conflict
...
However, not all refugees fleeing Ukraine have had the same experience. African and Indian men and women, many of whom went to Ukraine to further their education, have regularly reported being denied space on trains or buses or faced ridicule at the border. They have complained of a sometimes hostile reception from Ukrainian authorities and officials from other European countries that have by and large taken in scores of Ukrainians.

This disparity in treatment, for many, illustrates a hypocritical attitude they say has always been present across Europe.
...
“There was no one offering their homes to Black people, no one offering to pick up the Black individuals. There was a tremendous amount of people offering help and support, but I feel like it was limited to Ukrainian nationals alone. And we know what that means. It’s excluding a group of people.

NEVER FORGIVE. NEVER FORGET.

Refugees From Other Wars Want to Know Why White Ukrainians Get VIP Treatment

Hint: it is not because they are Ukrainians.

Quote
ROME—The queue outside the Baobob refugee soup kitchen in central Rome is filled with desperate migrants and refugees every single day of the week. In recent months, most are from Afghanistan and war-torn African nations like Somalia, Sudan and the Tigray region of Ethiopia. There aren’t any Ukrainian war refugees standing in the cold, though. They have been welcomed into warm homes and care facilities. “They are white, so they get special treatment,” a man from Afghanistan who worked as a translator for Italian peacekeepers in Afghanistan before the Taliban regained control over the country told The Daily Beast as he crouched beside the tent nearby where he sleeps.

Correct answer!

Quote
The man doesn’t want his name published out of fear it will negatively impact his asylum request, which he launched more than a year ago. He and thousands of other war refugees in Italy are stuck in bureaucratic limbo that can take two or three years before they learn if they can legally stay even when they are from countries that have suffered longer wars than the four-week invasion of Ukraine, whose refugees do not have to go through the same process—even though they are not part of the European Union. Ukrainian refugees are automatically granted a right to stay for 90 days—no questions asked. If they want to extend the stay, they can apply for a 90-day extension.

While no one disagrees that Ukrainians need assistance and support as their country is besieged in this unfair war, there is a growing sense of a double standard when it comes to the color of refugees’ skin and their treatment.

Actually, I disagree. At minimum, Ukrainians should move to the back of the queue. Only when all refugees from chronologically earlier crises have been absorbed should we even consider what to do with Ukrainian refugees. Anything better for Ukrainian refugees is favouritism.

Quote
Andrea Costa, who runs the Baobab center in Rome, told The Daily Beast that while he agrees wholeheartedly that the Ukrainian refugees need help, so do the African and Middle Eastern refugees.

And the latter have needed help for much longer, and have waited for help for much longer, which is why they should not now have to be kept waiting even longer while "white" Ukrainian refugees do not have to wait at all!

Quote
And he sees hypocrisy in calling those helping Ukrainians “saviors” while those who save African refugees are often prosecuted for people smuggling, referring to a number of NGO rescue boat captains currently facing charges in Italy for rescuing migrants and refugees.

Very good point. Anyone still remember Mayor Lucano of Riace? He was a true saviour. This is what happened to him:

Lucano’s dream was to bring an abandoned place back to life by welcoming migrants — creating a community in Riace where they could live and possibly work while seeking asylum. And for over a decade, his dream became a reality for countless people arriving in Italy in search of a better life.

Yet on Sept. 30, Lucano’s life became a living nightmare. Judges sentenced him to 13 years and 2 months in jail, far in excess of anything sought by prosecutors.

The judges must think it's OK for Italy to be "white".

The discrepancy between “types” of refugees was made crystal clear in the days after Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine. Thousands of Africans who were working and studying in Ukraine were stopped at the Polish border while white Ukrainians were quickly ushered through, according to Human Rights Watch.
...
At the Santa Sofia Ukrainian Church in Rome, organizers have had to turn people who are delivering supplies including clothing and medicine away due to the outpouring of generosity. “We have told them to give the excess to other refugee groups in the city,” a church official told The Daily Beast. “We are overwhelmed with donations.” Meanwhile the Baobob center regularly publishes its list of needs: canned food, children’s clothing and shoes, diapers, and medicine.
...
Back in Italy at the food line, there is little belief that the Ukrainian situation will make any difference to how war refugees from elsewhere are received.
...
Italy has allotted 13,000 places in refugee centers for Ukrainians. “We were wondering if there was a place to sleep even for Sudanese fleeing a civil war who has already seen the deaths of 300,000 people or for Afghans stranded from Europe on the border between Bosnia and Croatia. We asked ourselves if they deserve peace too. Beyond skin color, that’s it.” The Baobob group posted, noting that Italy set up a National Emergency Fund with €10 million to respond to the “serious crisis: The Ukraine one. Only the Ukrainian one.”

I am sure there exist other individuals like Lucano. I am also sure that if they try to do what Lucano did, they too will be imprisoned for it. This is why the focus has to first be on exterminating racists; only after that can we be practically effective in helping "non-white" refugees on a large scale.

Fleeing War in Ukraine, They're Met With Employers Offering Paychecks

PARIS — German companies are touting thousands of jobs for Ukrainian refugees. Portuguese firms promise language training for Ukrainians looking for work. In Lithuania, businesses are providing on-site child care to help Ukrainian women move seamlessly into the workplace.

As the wartime exodus from Ukraine grows larger, companies are rushing forward with offers of employment, from high-level engineering jobs to retail and factory work, to help those displaced by the fighting settle quickly — as well as to fill their own labor shortages.

The outreach is happening with a speed and scope that is rare for the European Union. Unlike refugees who have flooded Europe from wars in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, the 3 million Ukrainians fleeing Russian bombs are being placed on a fast track for protection and employment, as governments waive visa requirements and provide almost instant access to labor markets and education.

Thousands of jobs are being offered exclusively to Ukrainian refugees by on-the-ground recruitment agencies and through a vast network of online job boards that has sprung up across social media.
...
jobs have been offered before they have decided whether to stay.

Some offers are aimed at filling openings that have languished in Europe since the reopening of economies after coronavirus lockdowns, in industries ranging from health care in Germany to warehouse work in the Czech Republic.

The global temporary staffing agency Adecco last week launched a recruitment site to match Ukrainian job seekers with employers. More than 200 companies have posted jobs and about 900 Ukrainians have registered on the platform.

“Work underpins their ability to begin new lives and secure their futures,” said Adecco CEO Alain Dehaze.

In Germany, where over 300,000 jobs are unfilled, a group of entrepreneurs created JobAidUkraine to help refugees find work as they arrived by rail, bus and air. On a recent day, nearly 30,000 online visitors scrolled through over 5,000 jobs listed by companies from London to Lisbon, Portugal, for McDonald’s shift work, human resources specialists, software developers and nursing aides.
...
In Portugal, the government is providing courses in Portuguese as part of the broader European Union effort to fast-track integration. Portuguese companies have already registered 20,000 job offers for Ukrainians in information technology, transport and hospitality.
...
In Lithuania, with 20,000 Ukrainian refugees, companies are finding ways to accommodate working mothers, said Inga Balnanosiene, the director of employment services at the Lithuanian labor ministry.

All of this could have been done just as easily for earlier waves of refugees. It was not.

Quote
“This will help solve our labor shortage problem, even temporarily, and our people are not afraid that they will lose their own jobs because we have enough for everyone,” she said.

When earlier refugees were looking for jobs, the response was: "They'll take all our jobs! Jobs should go to natives first!" Nativism is already bad, but now it has been proven beyond doubt that rightists were merely pretending to be nativists. Their true motivation is ethnotribalism. Translated, the above part in bold reads: "It's OK for non-natives to be "white"."

Peter Chernyshov, who headed Kyivstar, Ukraine's biggest mobile phone company, contacted two British families on Sunday after reading that they were having to pay for hotels in Poland for Ukrainian refugees whose applications to join them in the UK had been delayed.
...
Lauren Corbishley, an NHS mental health nurse, has so far spent £1,000 on hotel bills for Yuliia Meshchierriakova, her partner Glib and daughter, Maryna, 17, who fled Kharkiv when the war began. "I am so very grateful to him," she said.

Sarah Ockelton, an NHS dietetics assistant practitioner whose sponsored Ukrainian refugee, Nataliya Nikolaienko, had faced being made homeless in Poland when her free accommodation ends on Tuesday, said: "What a kind man. I am in shock. It is fantastic news."

None of this was done for refugees from the earlier crises. We all know why not.

"White" refugees must live in luxury:

Family barred from hosting Ukrainian refugees because home has bare floorboards

A British family has been barred from hosting Ukrainian refugees because their home has bare floorboards, as council officials start to check Homes for Ukraine accommodation.

One householder was ordered to board up an internal glass door even though it had safety glass, while another was told they would be rejected if they failed to put locks on all their windows.

Council checklists warned against stairs that were "excessively steep", bannisters with gaps that were more than 100 mm wide, looped cords or chains for blinds, low windowsills, poisonous plants or any damp or mould.
...
A couple in Hull taking in a lone Ukrainian refugee from Sumy said they were told they needed to pay for a service for their two-year-old boiler, while friends taking in a family were told to update their electrics and lighting, costing them £850.

It followed BBC reports of families being rejected because plug sockets were too low for children or being told to drain their ponds if they were taking in children.

A woman hosting four refugees in a two-bedroom flat above her hairdressing salon had to spend £450 after two visits by a council inspector judged that her five smoke alarms were not adequate and that she had the "wrong type of plaster" in the shop ceiling.
...
But some councils have gone further. South Derbyshire District Council asked on its form: "Is the property free from hoarding?" Buckinghamshire required that outdoor play equipment should be safe and securely attached and greenhouses should have safety glass.

Meanwhile, "non-white" refugees can live in outdoor tent camps which are bulldozed once every few months.

"We need to build up our capacities very quickly" - Moldova's Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita
Quote
Moldova's Prime Minister Natalita Gavrilita spoke with DW ahead of a donor conference and said that besides the parties to the conflict, Moldova is the country most affected by the war. "About 15% of our trade was with Ukraine and Russia and Belarus. The Odesa port was a very important logistics port," the prime minister said. These come on top of other issues also seen in other European countries such as rising energy costs and high inflation which has "already reached 18% in Moldova." Gavrilita said that more than 400,000 people have already fled Ukraine into Moldova, of which 100,000 have decided to stay. "At a stable population of around 2.7 million, this represents more than 3% of our population, almost 4%," she said, adding that most of the refugees were vulnerable people in need of aid. Moldova is also dealing with a separatist region along the border with Ukraine — Transnistria — where Russian troops have been stationed. Gavrilita said Moldova is "concerned" about their presence, but added that they have not seen "any specific plans or movements" that indicate those forces would engage in the war in Ukraine.

Quote
With more than 4.9 million Ukrainian refugees fleeing Russia’s invasion of their country, the Biden administration announced in late March it will accept 100,000 people who are escaping that conflict into the U.S.

While pro-immigration activists usually welcome such an announcement, some are criticizing what they see as a double standard being applied at the southern border that favors Ukrainian refugees over Black and brown migrants who have already been waiting. In March, over 3,000 Ukrainian refugees were processed at the U.S.-Mexico border, while refugees from other countries have been waiting months — and in some cases years — for their asylum cases to be heard.

“That is very different than the treatment that has been received by largely Black and brown refugees over the last two years, while the border has been closed to all asylum seekers due to a law known as Title 42, which is billed as a public health measure needed to keep the U.S. public safe from rising levels of COVID in the world, but really functions to keep out asylum seekers that are Black and brown,” Nicole Ramos, director of the Border Rights Project at the legal services organization Al Otro Lado, told Yahoo News.
...
Ramos said refugees from Haiti and other countries fall squarely within the protections provided by U.S. asylum law but are being denied the opportunity to access the legal process. Those who have already waited months for their cases to be processed are often just as desperately in need of humanitarian assistance as refugees from Ukraine.

Francel Celestin is a Haitian immigrant who is waiting, along with his wife and three children, for their asylum case to be processed in Tijuana, Mexico.
...
Like many Haitian migrants, he isn't sure what to make of priority potentially being granted to Ukrainian refugees.

“For me, I feel small. I feel small because we come from the Caribbean, and they come from Europe. They left because of a war in their country, but it is their war. But we also left because of a war — because in our country, children cannot walk alone, and we cannot live a decent life for our children,” Celestin said.

If Ukrainian refugees themselves had any conscience, they would refuse to accept processing until all refugees who have been waiting longer than themselves have been processed first. But they don't, because they don't.

Germany expels Afghan refugees to accommodate Ukrainians
...
US-based Foreign Policy magazine recounted the story of helpless Afghan families which arrived in Germany as refugees fleeing the Taliban rule but were quite recently expelled by the German government to make room for incoming Ukrainian refugees.
...
“The evictions purposefully weren’t publicized. Some people had lived in their homes for years and were ripped out of their social structures, including children who were moved to locations far from their respective schools,” said Tareq Alaows, a board member of the Berlin Refugee Council, a collaboration of different organizations helping to improve conditions for refugees in the German capital and making sure their rights are adhered to.
...
According to the report, the eviction decision was made by Berlin’s Senate Department for Integration, Labor, and Social Services. The department argues that the move is “based on operationally necessary and difficult considerations” and that there is no alternative because Ukrainians, including many women with children, needed a roof over their heads and a bed.

So if new refugees from Afghanistan arrive, will Germany by the same reasoning expel the current Ukrainian refugees because these new Afghan refugees would need a roof over their heads and a bed? We all know the answer.

https://fargowells.com/afghan-refugees-evicted-to-make-room-for-ukrainians-media/

Quote
According to surveys, Germans favor admitting Ukrainian refugees over Afghans and others. A poll taken last year found that 60% of respondents didn’t want their government to take in any more refugees. Even as then-Chancellor Angela Merkel announced plans to welcome tens of thousands of Afghans, Armin Laschet, the leader of Merkel’s CDU party, told voters that 2015 “must not be repeated,” referring to Merkel’s decision to welcome around a million Middle Eastern and African migrants.

However, 91% of Germans in March supported taking in refugees from Ukraine. This, combined with Poland and Hungary – normally staunch opponents of immigration – taking in hundreds of thousands of displaced Ukrainians, has prompted liberal pundits and activists to accuse European nations of applying “double standards” to refugees, depending on their country of origin.

Even if we assume all 40% who wanted the government to take more refugees are among the 91% supporting taking in refugees from Ukraine, that still leaves 51% of outright ethnonepotist Germans. This is why no leftist should support democracy.

BEIRUT (AP) — Umm Khaled hardly leaves the tent where she lives in northwest Syria, and she says she doesn’t pay attention to the news. But she knows one reason why it is getting harder and harder to feed herself and her children: Ukraine.
...
The biggest provider, the U.N. World Food Program, began this week to cut the size of the monthly rations it gives to 1.35 million people in the territory.

The Ukraine crisis has also created a whole new group of refugees. European nations and the U.S. have rushed to help more than 5.5 million Ukrainians who have fled to neighboring countries, as well as more than 7 million displaced within Ukraine’s borders.
...
Meanwhile, UNICEF said funding for humanitarian operations in Syria is dwindling fast, saying it has received less than half of its funding requirements for this year.
...
Umm Khaled is among those who rely on food aid. With her aid rations reduced, she has gone deeper in debt to feed her family.
...
Her family lives on two meals a day -- a small breakfast and a main meal late in the afternoon that serves as lunch and dinner. Her only income is from picking olives for a few weeks a year, making 20 Turkish liras ($1.35) a day.

“We used to get enough rice, bulgur, lentils and others. Now they keep reducing them,” she said by telephone from the camp.
...
In many of its operations around the world, WFP is reducing the size of the rations it provides, she said. Starting this month in northwest Syria, the provisions will go down to 1,177 calories a day, from 1,340.
...
“Syria is on the verge of becoming yet another forgotten crisis,” Assistant U.N. Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya warned in late April.

In northwest Syria, “a staggering 4.1 million people” need humanitarian aid, Msuya said — not just food, but also medicines, blankets, school supplies and shelter. She said almost a million people in the territory, mainly women and children, live in tents, “half of which are beyond their normal lifespan.”
...
Umm Khaled said she has no choice but to endure her deteriorating living conditions.

“They keep reducing our food basket,” she said. “May God protect us if they cut it completely.”

If it were simply a matter of more refugees leading to food having to be shared more thinly, we would hear stories about hungry Ukrainian refugees also. We don't, because it isn't. What is really going on is that some refugees are not getting enough food in order to ensure others get plenty. It is not hard to guess which.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The quick acceptance of Ukrainians fleeing Russia's aggression puts a spotlight on Europe's “double standard” for migrants, standing against its nonwelcome for people fleeing violence in Africa, the Mideast and elsewhere, the head of the world's largest humanitarian network said Monday.
...
“We hoped that the Ukrainian crisis would have been a turning point in the European migration policies,” Rocca said. “But unfortunately, this was not the case.”

He said the 27-member European Union still has different approaches to migration at its eastern border from Ukraine and its southern border on the Mediterranean.
...
Since Russia invaded on Feb. 24, more than 6 million people have fled Ukraine, with Poland absorbing more than 3.3 million and over 900,000 going to Romania, 605,000 to Hungary, 463,000 to Moldova and 421,000 to Slovakia, according to the U.N. refugee agency.

By contrast, Rocca said, migrants, refugees and asylum seekers trying to get to Europe are still dying, facing abuse and struggling to access essential services.

Over 48,000 migrants have died or disappeared since 2014 while traveling at sea, and the deadliest route is that taken by migrants across the central Mediterranean to Europe, with at least 19,000 such deaths, he said.

Those who arrive, mainly in Italy, Greece and Spain, are often put in camps and face long waits for their asylum claims to be heard.

“In Europe there is a big heart and soul, because the community in Europe were able to open their arms, receiving millions in a few days of Ukrainians,” Rocca said. “So, they lie about the threat that is coming from the Mediterranean Sea, when it comes about a few thousands of people.”
...
“There is a double standard,” Rocca said. “This is evident. It is in our eyes, and we cannot deny it when it comes about seeking protection.”

For example, would they have done the following to a boat full of Ukrainians?

https://news.sky.com/story/uk-and-french-services-left-rescue-of-more-than-30-drowning-migrants-in-channel-to-each-other-report-claims-12658965

The West Is Fully Behind Ukraine. Developing Countries See a Double Standard.
...
Western unity over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been swift, solid, and backed by arms and funds. But there is rising unease in low- and middle-income countries about the geopolitical stakes in which they have been swept up.
...
The view that there are double standards is exacerbated by the sense that Western countries are not particularly concerned about the social and economic effects of the war on developing countries. Developing countries are already suffering from the failure of the multilateral system, and the West, to assist with the health and economic costs of the Covid-19 pandemic. The war and the effects of sanctions are intensifying spiraling debt problems in the global South. The proportion of developing countries already in or at high risk of debt distress has doubled since 2015, to 60%. The populations of many countries are highly affected by fast-rising food and energy prices.
...
Additional money for the global South will not come from donor budgets that are stretched due to the costs of receiving Ukrainian refugees.
...
It would take only a relatively simple set of decisions for developed countries’ central banks to recycle their SDRs beyond the IMF trust funds available and onward to the multilateral development banks, including regional development banks. Yet reticence from developed country central banks to agree on a procedure for this reallocation has held up action for nine months.
...
The global South wants to see the North follow through on promised collective action, after two years of disappointment over the global Covid-19 response. It would be disastrous in political terms if they see resources being granted to Ukraine that have been effectively withheld from other countries.

This is what is in fact happening. The only way we will ever possibly get back the resources they stole from us during the colonial era is by mass immigration into the former Western colonial powers.

Its report, released on Thursday, found UK staff working under Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) contracts who were overwhelmingly white, were paid significantly more than people hired locally. One UK staff member was paid 10 times more than a locally employed colleague.
...
Lorriann Robinson, from international consultancy firm Advocacy Team, told MPs she had seen examples of projects where applying the FCDO’s rates meant it was possible to have a professional with 15 years’ experience working alongside a graduate from the UK with two years’ experience who is paid more. “That is an example of what we would say is a policy that is producing inequities between racial groups,” she said.
...
Boards and senior leadership positions in NGOs are dominated by white people and based in high-income countries such as the UK, underpinned by false assumptions that best practice originates in wealthy states, the report said.

Themrise Khan, an international development professional from Pakistan, said aid was “yet another vehicle to indulge in racist practices”.

She said aid was meant to rebuild countries after the end of colonial rule but had ended up being “a vehicle for former colonisers to continue to control most of their former colonists by holding them ransom to aid”.

“If we want racism in aid to end, we must accept the fact that the northern system of aid and everyone in it also abets racism,” Khan said.

This is why I have never been a fan of aid. If you really want to help people in another country, don't send money to that country, just accept (or, better yet, provide transport for) all refugees from that country! It really is that simple.

Suspected people smugglers arrested across Europe – BBC News
Quote
Police in at least five different European countries have detained dozens of people accused of smuggling people across the English Channel to the UK.

It is thought the criminal network brought up to 10,000 migrants in small boats in a period of 12-18 months.

In Germany, 18 suspects were arrested as hundreds of officers swooped in on locations across the country.

A main focus of the operation was the city of Osnabrück, which police said was one of the hubs of the operation.

Videos Emerge of Sesame Place Character Snubbing MORE Black Kids
...
More videos have emerged of a Sesame Place character seemingly ignoring Black kids, a day after the Sesame Street-themed park in Philadelphia claimed a viral clip was the result of a one-off misunderstanding.

The videos surfaced after a clip of two Black girls watching the Sesame Street Party Parade went viral over the weekend, showing Rosita, an aqua blue monster, seemingly snubbing them to give high-fives to white children.
...
LaMarr said multiple families have since contacted him about their Black children also being snubbed by the same character at the park.

In one video shared by @theneighborhoodtalk, Rosita appears to ignore a Black boy during a parade when he steps out to greet her.

In another video shared by @hollywoodunlocked, a Black girl—who is the most prominent in a crowd—consistently waves to Rosita, but the character ignores her and hugs a white child next to her.

Multiple videos from @frobabies show Rosita prioritizing hugs for white children in a diverse crowd of kids.

A small girl is seen in a video running up to Rosita in the park, but the character waves at other kids and walks off, leaving the girl confused and by herself.

With the video, the user posted the caption, “Now, I’m not saying #Rosita is racist.. but whoever is under this/those masks sure is curving a bunch of brown kids..She ignored Lola TWICE last Sunday. (7/10) Lola ran up to her saying ‘ROSITA!’ The character went out of their way to change course and Immediately after hugged and took a pic with a little white girl. Investigate this pattern.”
...
In a post with the video, the mother claimed Rosita interacted with white guests immediately before and after her daughter and niece tried to hug the muppet.

Quote
The nonprofit Washington Office on Latin America reported that by February of this year, the U.S. government had deported some 20,000 Haitian migrants since the beginning of the Biden Administration. While sending that many people back to a country ranked as the poorest in the Western hemisphere sounds unjust, it represents a tiny fraction of the hundreds of thousands of Haitians who have reached the U.S. in recent decades only to be deported with little to no due process. Many of them, already fleeing poverty, violence or both, were abused by U.S. authorities along the way.

Back in September, nearly 15,000 mostly Haitian immigrants were camped under a bridge at the Del Rio, Texas border. Nearly 30,000 migrants have passed through since last Sept. 9, according to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Photos of border patrol agents on horses forcefully preventing immigrants from crossing the border—visuals I can only associate with slavery and the roles of slave patrols—have gone viral. President Joe Biden called the border patrol agents’ actions “horrible,” but his administration has done little to bring them to heel.
...
why hasn’t the U.S. opened its arms to the Haitian people?

Fully considering that question requires contrasting how this country treats immigrants from other lands with how it treats Haitians. For decades Cuban defectors were allowed to enter the U.S. under the “wet foot, dry foot” policy, which ended in 2017 under the Obama administration. This policy allowed undocumented Cubans, who reached U.S. soil, were able to reside and receive their residency after a year living in the U.S., all while Haitians were continually expelled without question.

More recently, the Biden Administration in April implemented a “fast” and “streamlined” plan for Ukrainian refugees, who are fleeing Russia’s invasion of their country. The plan will allow nearly 100,000 Ukrainians to enter the U.S. in the coming months, though on a temporary basis and only as long as they have a financial sponsor in the country. Nearly 23,000 Ukrainians arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border in March and April and have been processed for entry.
...
The major difference is that most of the Haitian immigrants are Black while most of the Ukranians and Cubans before them are not.
...
many immigrants from other countries continue to skip the line and enter the U.S. while Haitians wait for a turn that often never comes.

GORZOW WIELKOPOLSKI, Poland (Reuters) - Construction sites, factory assembly lines and warehouses across central Europe are scrambling to fill vacancies after tens of thousands of Ukrainian men left their blue-collar jobs to return home after Russia invaded their country.

Ukrainian workers had flocked to central Europe in the past decade - drawn by higher wages and aided by an easing of visa requirements - filling jobs that weren't highly paid enough for local workers in construction, the automotive sector, and heavy industry.
...
the departure of Ukrainian workers was leading to rising costs and delays in manufacturing orders and construction work.
...
"Many companies are looking for employees on a massive scale at various construction sites due to large outflows," he told Reuters.
...
Some companies are bumping up salary offers to attract replacement workers, seeking to lure local workers and stave off competing firms for the limited number of Ukrainians.

"We're searching for Ukrainian workers on the market, offering more money," said Maciej Jeczmyk, chief executive of Poland-based manufacturer InBet, which makes prefabricated materials for construction. "We are adapting almost every week."

Jewish volunteers bond with Ukrainian kids at summer camp
...
After Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, people across Poland sprang into action to welcome and help refugees from the neighboring country. Poland has accepted more of the war's refugees than any other nation.

Local and international Jewish organizations also wasted no time in trying to meet the most urgent needs: to house and feed the Ukrainians, most of whom are women and children.

With the war about to enter its sixth month, the camp at the Lauder Morasha School in Warsaw reflects the type of programming being developed to meet the changing needs of refugees. Many Ukrainians realize they won’t be able to go home soon, or perhaps ever, said Helise Lieberman, the director of the Taube Center for Jewish Life and Learning.

Mornings were devoted to Polish, English and math lessons so the children will be in a stronger position to adapt to school. Many of the Ukrainian kids who arrived in Poland since February finished the Ukrainian academic year remotely but will be entering Polish schools in September.

Campers spent afternoons doing arts and crafts, playing sports and making excursions to city museums and parks. About a third of the 90 children who attended the camp are Jewish, according to Marta Saracyn, the head of the Jewish Community Center of Warsaw.
...
The Taube Center and the Jewish Community Center of Warsaw organized the camp in conjunction with the Jewish Federations of North America, the Jewish Agency for Israel and the American Joint Distribution Committee.

The Jewish Federations of North America recruited nearly 90 Russian-speaking educators and rabbinic leaders to help Ukrainian refugees in Poland and Hungary, and 10 helped out at the Warsaw camp, said Hannah Miller, who runs the volunteer program.

The 10 camp volunteers are Russian-speaking immigrants who left the Soviet Union decades ago, or the children of Russian Jewish immigrants. Only a couple spoke Ukrainian, so they mostly spoke to the children in Russian, which is also widely used in much of Ukraine.

Quote
White Socialite Hacked Her Mother to Death—and Tried to Blame a Black Man
...
On Nov. 17, 1948, police were called to the home of society matron Idella Thompson on tony Deer Creek Drive in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. The house was quiet, but as they made their way further inside, they discovered a grim scene.

Idella was lying dead in her bathroom, which was “as bloody as could be,” Leland police chief Frank P. Aldridge said. Next to her lay a pair of pruning shears, the kind home gardeners everywhere use to cut roses and manicure their flower beds. It was the obvious weapon responsible for over 150 small, bloody cuts that covered Idella’s body.
...
But perhaps even more surprising than the murder is what the town did about it.
...
From the moment police arrived on the scene, the investigation was a mess, as can happen in a small town where everyone has a personal relationship with nearly everyone else and many of the players involved are related. As word quickly spread about what had happened—thanks in no small part to the loud sirens and nosy switchboard operator—the white members of Leland began to converge on the scene, which had not been properly secured.

The door was left wide open and too many people were allowed to walk around inside, tracking blood around the house. The investigators took Ruth’s word for what had happened and saw nothing wrong with allowing the messy crime scene to be cleaned up soon after. They also allowed Ruth to return to her home just a few doors down without thoroughly questioning her. It was only later that they realized it might have been useful to preserve her bloody clothes, now washed clean of any evidence.

What Ruth told them before she took to her bed was that a Black man she didn’t recognize had come into the house and attacked her mother.
Idella was known to be “right difficult” and very protective of the pecans that grew in her backyard. Ruth said maybe what happened was Idella started going off on the man for picking her pecans, something that happened regularly. Maybe Idella grabbed the pruning shears Ruth had left behind earlier that day, and the man in an act of self-defense-turned-rage grabbed the “snips” from her and began to attack.

At her words, a posse of white men on horseback rode into the Black part of town to try to find a man fitting Ruth’s description. Before the night was over, a few suspects had been rounded up for questioning, but they were all released the next day. It was pretty clear even then that no one matching Ruth’s description was going to be found. One woman remembers her father coming home from the search party and immediately saying, “There’s no Negro. It’s somebody in the family.”
...
On Jan. 8, 1949, Ruth was taken into custody.

You think the ethnonepotism is over? Not a chance:

Quote
Ruth was found guilty of first degree murder.
...
she received the lightest punishment possible for the charge: life in prison rather than death by the electric chair.

Ruth would go on to serve only six years
and through her husband’s never-ending campaigning and political maneuvering, she would eventually not just get out of prison but also receive a pardon.
...
“I just came to think of her as a special character. Really smart. Way too smart,” Lowry says. “I’ve known a number of women like that who come from the era before mine. And I think when you look at Ruth lying—well, not lying but saying, ‘Don’t tell John’ [about her debts]—she wants to be in charge. She wants to have her own life.

If you ask me, that she tried to pin the murder on a "non-white" was probably the action she took that convinced the authorities to go lightly on her.

For esophagogastric cancers, it took white people 53 days to get a diagnosis while Asians waited 100 days, which is six weeks longer.

For myeloma, the median wait time for white people was 93 days, but for Black people, the wait time was 127 days, which is over a month longer.

Family says fatal shooting case shows ‘stand your ground’ defense doesn’t work for Black men

William “Marc” Wilson was recently convicted of involuntary manslaughter for a shooting that he says was in self-defense against a racist attack on a Georgia highway, and his family and lawyers say the case reveals a racial double standard for “stand your ground” laws.

“If you put me in Marc’s shoes, there’s no way that I would've been prosecuted,” Wilson’s cousin, Chance Pridgen, who is white, told Yahoo News. “Odds are I would've been given a medal — probably gotten a parade in my name. It’s unreal how he was treated just because he’s a little bit more tan than I am.”
...
The case against Wilson was closely watched by legal experts and civil rights advocates who have long criticized the use of “stand your ground” laws as racist. Perhaps the most high-profile case was the 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black teen. George Zimmerman, who killed Martin, successfully argued that the use of force was justified under Florida’s self-defense laws.

Studies have found a significant racial disparity in whether homicides are deemed justified based on the race of the shooter and the person shot. A 2020 study by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights said "white-on-black homicides have justifiable findings 33 percentage points more often than black-on-white homicides,” with “stand your ground” laws exacerbating that disparity.

“This case, among so many others, highlights the urgency in why Georgia must address the racial disparity in Stand Your Ground claims,” James Woodall, a public policy associate with the Southern Center for Human Rights, said in a statement to Yahoo News. “It is troubling that people continue to have to defend themselves against violent behavior, only to be further criminalized by an unjust legal system.”
...
CJ Jenkins, an organizer and JustGeorgia coalition member who has been working as a liaison between the Statesboro community and Wilson’s legal team, says the facts of the case were on the defendant’s side.

“[The teens] admitted to hiding evidence. They admitted to being intoxicated,” Jenkins told Yahoo News.

Maybe it's because Wilson didn't do this in court?

“This is institutional racism,” he said. “There are two classes of refugees.”

In Germany and across the rest of the European Union, officials say the sudden scale of the Ukrainian arrivals has left the bloc with little choice but to offer automatic recognition and, therefore, direct access to services for which other asylum seekers often wait months and years.

If the aim is purely to clear the backlog, then why not in the same decision offer automatic recognition to the earlier arrivals also? We all know why not.

Let me preface this by saying there is nothing romantic about this restaurant. It looks like this:

One if by Land, Two if by Sea, considered one of the most romantic restaurants in the world, is now under fire after a TikTok user accused the establishment of racially discriminating "against non-white people — particularly Asians."

TikTok user Annie (@rokug4n) called out One if by Land, Two if by Sea in a recent post. She says in her video that she and her boyfriend recently had a date at the restaurant and were seated on the second floor, or mezzanine. During their meal, she noticed that most of the people around them were purportedly Asian.

“I'm going to preface this by saying, I have no issue dining with other Asian people, other Chinese people, I don’t care. What I do care about, and have an issue with, is people of color being separated from white people by white people in higher-end establishments,” she says.

Annie then highlights the difference in ambiance between that of the first floor and that of the mezzanine, pointing out that the first floor, where the white diners are purportedly usually seated, has chandeliers, high ceilings, huge windows, mosaics and plenty of natural lighting. She claims that the second floor, which has two small windows, is not as well lit. It also does not have a piano and a bar.

“The unfortunate truth is that racial discrimination in higher-end spaces is not a new phenomenon,” she says. “What is unfortunate is that One if by Land, Two if by Sea has been racially discriminatory for so long.”

Annie also points out that “so many Asian foodies are paying hundreds of dollars to this restaurant and getting racially discriminated against.”

All I will say is that the restaurant's ethics matches its aesthetics.

Also, a useful comment points out a fundamental asymmetry:

Pope Karen thinks it's OK for war criminals to be "white":

In an interview with the Catholic magazine America published Monday, the pope said that soldiers from Buryatia, where Buddhism is a major religion, and the Muslim-majority Chechnya republic, were “the cruellest” while fighting in Ukraine.

“Generally, the cruellest are perhaps those who are of Russia but are not of the Russian tradition, such as the Chechens, the Buryats and so on,” he said.

As if someone like him would know.

Human rights groups and independent media organisations have documented overwhelming evidence of war crimes by Russian forces, but there has been no data to suggest that soldiers from national minorities fighting in Ukraine have behaved worse in Ukraine than ethnic Russian members.

But let's just presume it anyway! When in doubt, "whites" are always better than "non-whites"!
