The History of Adults Blaming the Younger Generation
Quote
The timeless and everlasting need to blame young people for everything. Even though their parents did the same to them, and their parents to them, and so on and so on.

Found this quote in a book once:
"Adults are like butterflies; they have forgotten what it was like to be a caterpillar once."
Quote
I don’t want to be this kind of adult. I want the next generation to feel empowered
Quote
So basically society went downhill after the blasted youth started shaving
Quote
They forgot that the way that the younger generations acted depended on their teaching as parents, teachers abd society, who's to blame then?
Quote
Yes, let’s blame the generation after us for everything, even though we are the ones who raised them
Quote
Moral of the story: folks change a lot throughout their lives, but mankind has changed very little.
Quote
Two possible conclusions: society has been progressively getting worse and worse since 4th century BC, or, every generation thinks they’re better than the next.
Quote
The other quotes where bad, but Aristotle really had a point, the old folk have been young, but the young have never been old.
Quote
I think that there is some truth to what Aristotle said. He wasn’t blaming young people, he was simply stating the fact that young people aren’t mature.
Quote
Suddenly the "okay boomer" thing takes historical significance.
Quote
okay boomer is basically the reversal  of  old people complaining about  youth, where we have young people blaming old ones for their situation.
Quote
Half of these actually have good points. The other half range from grumbling old men to the mouthpieces of powerful people telling anyone who sees flaws in the system to shut up.

Westerners are some of the most foul mouthed people in the world. A bad habit I picked up living in the UK and the US. The UK and the US are some of the worst when it comes to cursing for no good reason. I remember being told off by civilians in Germany and in France about our cursing habits when I was out in public with my U.S. Army friends. Certainly nothing to be proud of.

I'm also pretty sure your mother did not set the rules for this forum which is owned by a private business?

You are an absolute idiot.

US President Joe Biden calls Chinese President Xi Jinping a dictator - BBC News
Quote
US President Joe Biden called Chinese President Xi Jinping a dictator at a fundraising event in California.

The remark came a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Xi for talks in Beijing, which were aimed at easing tensions between the two superpowers.

Biden also said Xi was embarrassed after an alleged Chinese spy balloon was shot down by the US.

China said it "firmly opposes" Mr Biden's comments.

I didn't know dictators were shy about being called dictators. Did Biden essentially just out him to his entire country? I didn't realise closeted dictators were something that we had to tiptoe around

Irresponsible but accurate.

Xi should have taken it as a compliment and then reminded everyone that 75 million US citizens voted for Trump, Marie Le Pen was close to being elected in France, etc.

Why do some people have problems with authority?
Quote
Let’s say you’re an adult and all your life you’ve had problems with authority, or should I say problems with people in a position of authority. A typical such person, used to get into conflicts with teachers, caretakers, sports coaches, probably police as well. Later, that reflected during military service (if applicable), but more so at work. The conflict was transferred and projected on managers.

We’re talking here about consistently placing oneself antagonistic, opposite to people in a position of power. A life pattern, not remote or justifiable episodes (like rioting against abusive measures). If you have problems with authority, then by default: the teacher, the police officer, the coach, the manager are the enemy. No need for a justification. The person having these problems also gets the whole angry pack “benefits”: frustration, anger, impatience, somatization, episodes of depression and possible substance abuse. In turn, these cause trouble retaining jobs, relationships (both romantic and friendly).

Perhaps the better question is, why do Westerners have such problem with authority unless it's their own tribe in power?

Mysterious spiral signals in the human brain could be key to our cognition
Quote
Scientists suggest strange swirls across the outer layer of the brain might be used to link different parts of it together and help process information faster.
Quote
Mysterious, spiral signals have been discovered in the human brain, and the scientists who found the swirls think they could help to organize complex brain activity.

The signals, which appeared as swirling spirals of brain waves across the outer layer of the brain, were discovered in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain scans of 100 young adults, and appeared both when they were resting and working on tasks.

The exact purpose of these vortices is unknown, but their discoverers think the spiral signals might be used to link different parts of the brain and help process information faster. These vortices may even be impaired by brain diseases such as dementia, and could serve as inspiration for advanced computers that emulate the complex processes of the human mind. The researchers published their findings June 15 in the journal Nature Human Behaviour...

these alien debates are taking away from energy and eyes that should be used to discuss the _ethics_ of the impending human-made AI crisis.

The EU seems to be ahead of most on this subject:

EU lawmakers pass landmark artificial intelligence regulation
Quote
The European Union’s AI Act is the first comprehensive set of regulations for the artificial intelligence industry.
The law proposes requiring generative AI systems, such as ChatGPT, to be reviewed before commercial release. It also seeks to ban real-time facial recognition.
It comes as global regulators are racing to get a handle on the technology and limit some of the risks to society, including job security and political integrity.
Quote
The European Parliament has approved the bloc’s landmark rules for artificial intelligence, known as the EU AI Act, clearing a major hurdle for the first formal regulation of AI in the West to become law.

AI has become a key battleground in the global tech industry as companies compete for a leading role in developing the technology — particularly generative AI, which can generate new content from user prompts. The rules are the first comprehensive regulations for AI.

What generative AI is capable of, from producing music lyrics to generating code, has wowed academics, businesspeople and even school students. But it has also led to worries around job displacement, misinformation, and bias.

During a critical Wednesday vote, the Parliament adopted the AI Act with 499 votes in favor, 28 against and 93 abstentions. The regulation is far from becoming law, but it is likely to be one of the first formal rules for the technology globally.

European Parliament members agreed to bring generative AI tools like ChatGPT under greater restrictions. Generative AI developers will be required to submit their systems for review before releasing them commercially.

The Parliament also decided to hold firm with a ban on real-time biometric identification systems, as well as controversial “social scoring” systems.

Human rights campaigners had expressed concern over an attempt by the European People’s Party to water down the ban. Lawmakers nevertheless pressed ahead with it and agreed to prohibit biometric surveillance from all public settings...

Makes me wonder, if there was actually an accurate and incorruptible\truthful "social scoring system" in place in the West how would "whites" score? How would Trump supporters score?

Satellite images show that Spain is in danger of drying out one of the main wetlands in Europe
Quote
Wetlands are among the most biodiverse yet endangered ecosystems on Earth. In the last century alone, around 70% of them have disappeared, with overexploitation of aquifers being the main threat in many cases.

The Doñana National Park lies on the right bank of the Guadalquivir River mouth, in southern Spain. It represents the most important wetland in Western Europe, covering 543 km2 (209.65 sq mi) of protected area. The park owes its importance both to its marshes, which are house to thousands of breeding and wintering waterbirds, and to its ponds, which host a large number of rare, endemic and endangered species.

For more than 20 years, numerous researchers have been warning of the environmental risk posed by excessive urban and agricultural growth in the area surrounding the Andalusian national park.

For this reason, a proposed new law to extend irrigation in its vicinity even more is of concern to the international community.

The European Commission is again threatening to take Spain back to the Court of Justice of the European Union, which already condemned the country in 2021 for failing to take adequate measures to protect Doñana’s habitats.

Germany, the main import destination for strawberries from Huelva – one of the areas where Doñana is located – decided to send a delegation to find out about the situation – although the visit has been delayed because of the general elections that will take place in Spain at the end of July...

Himalayan glaciers on track to lose up to 75% of ice by 2100, report says
Quote
Glacier loss was as much as 65% faster in 2010s compared with 2000s

30% to 50% of glacial ice will be lost by 2100 at 1.5C of warming

Region expected to hit 'peak water' by mid-century, followed by shortages
Quote
June 20 (Reuters) - Glaciers in Asia’s Hindu Kush Himalaya could lose up to 75% of their volume by century’s end due to global warming, causing both dangerous flooding and water shortages for the 240 million people who live in the mountainous region, according to a new report.

A team of international scientists has found that ice loss in the region, home to the famous peaks of Everest and K2, is speeding up. During the 2010s, the glaciers shed ice as much as 65% faster than they had in the preceding decade, according to the assessment by the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), an intergovernmental scientific authority on the region.

But where glaciers will melt most depends on location. At 3C of warming — what the world is roughly on track for under current climate policies — glaciers in the Eastern Himalaya, which includes Nepal and Bhutan, will lose up to 75% of their ice. At 4C of warming, that ticks up to 80%.

Ancient Structure Along River Nile Is Oldest Hydraulics System of Its Kind
Quote
A smattering of ancient rock walls along the river Nile in Sudan appear to represent the oldest known hydraulics system of their kind.
Quote
New findings suggest people living in the ancient empire of Nubia in northern Sudan were manipulating the river to their advantage as far back as 3,000 years ago.

River 'groynes' are rigid structures, laid perpendicular to a shore or bank, that humans still use to this day to manipulate the flow of water and silt.

They're highly useful, and farmers and boaters along the Nile have known that for much longer than we ever knew.

The Yellow River in China used to have the oldest known groynes in the world. But not anymore.

Researchers in Australia and the United Kingdom have found evidence that Nubians were using groynes 2,500 years before farmers in China were doing the same.

Using satellite data, local surveys, and previous studies, the team revealed hundreds of groynes that still stand in Sudan to this day.

Some are buried under the waters of the Nile, while others stand on ancient riverbeds that have long since dried out.

Their shape, orientation, and size say a lot about their possible purposes.

Researchers suspect they were used to trap fertile silt, to irrigate land, to limit bank erosion, to defend against seasonal floods, to create optimal fishing pools, or to stop winds of sand from smothering crops.

Quote
The system is so effective, it's actually still employed by locals, although not in the same spots. Climate changes over the past three millennia have significantly altered the flow of the Nile in this region.

"From speaking with farmers in Sudanese Nubia, we also learned that river groynes continued to be built as recently as the 1970s, and that the land formed by some walls is still cultivated today," says archaeologist Matthew Dalton from the University of Western Australia.

"This incredibly long-lived hydraulic technology played a crucial role in enabling communities to grow food and thrive in the challenging landscapes of Nubia for over 3,000 years."

The practice of installing river groynes along the Nile was assumed to be modern, dating to around the early 19th century, and yet other older-looking groynes also exist in the region.

Unfortunately, the groynes found near archaeological sites from Nubia are often submerged in active channels, which means they cannot be properly dated.

Still, the ones that exist on dry riverbed, near an ancient walled town known as Amara West, have now been dated to between 3,000 and 3,300 years old...
