As I foresaw:

https://qz.com/2160305/russia-ukraine-war-has-improved-us-perception-of-china/

Quote
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February, the share of Americans polled who say China is a competitor of the US has grown from 54% in January to 62% as of March. Meanwhile, the share who say China is an enemy has fallen from 35% to 25%.

The flip side has happened in American’s perception of Russia: the share who say Russia is an enemy increased to 70%, up from 41% in January. Meanwhile, only 24% say Russia is a competitor, a sharp drop from 49% before the war.

This is the real reason why our enemies are desperate for the Ukraine war to end quickly. Which in turn is why we should try to keep it going.

Demographic Blueshift will help us:

The huge gap between those who worry about Taiwan/Hong Kong and those who worry about China defending Russia shatters the False Left narrative that the current conflict is about democracy vs autocracy.

The single best move China can make to improve relations with the US is to turn on Russia. The single best move the US can make to improve relations with China is to make clear that so long as China turns on Russia, the US has no interest in preserving democracy in Taiwan/Hong Kong.

Quote
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two months after warning that Beijing appeared poised to help Russia in its fight against Ukraine, senior U.S. officials say they have not detected overt Chinese military and economic support, a welcome development in the tense U.S.-China relationship.
...
"We have not seen the PRC provide direct military support to Russia’s war on Ukraine or engage in systematic efforts to help Russia evade our sanctions," a Biden administration official told Reuters, referring to the People's Republic of China.
...
As well as steering clear of directly backing Russia's war effort, China has avoided entering new contracts between its state oil refiners and Russia, despite steep discounts. In March its state-run Sinopec Group suspended talks about a major petrochemical investment and a gas marketing venture in Russia.

The US should try to encourage China to keep moving gradually away from Russia. In order for this to be successful, China should be shown signals that the US is willing to partially withdraw its nearby troops in return for China's cooperation on dealing with Russia. Then China might be encouraged to do even more against Russia with the hope of eventual full withdrawal of US troops from the Indo-Pacific.

Improved US-China relations would benefit not only the US and China, but also all the West Pacific countries which currently feel as if they have to choose between the two. Imagine how relaxed the entire region would become if the US and China switched to being on the same side (against Russia)!

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/balancing-act-between-china-us-093000446.html

Quote
The Philippines under Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jnr - who has swept to a landslide victory in the country's presidential election - is expected to tread a careful line between China and the United States, observers say.
...
Unlike his main rival Robredo - the vice-president, who said she would seek stronger ties with Washington and distance from Beijing - Marcos Jnr's tone was friendlier to China during the campaign.
...
Marcos Jnr also joined his family when they travelled to China in the 1970s to meet Chinese leaders. "He grew up witnessing the rapprochement, diplomatic relations and friendly interactions between China and the Philippines during his father's administration," said Yang Jinglin, associate professor at the Centre for China-Asean Studies at the Guangxi University for Nationalities.

"His mother is friendly to China ... and has a very good relationship with the Chinese government at a high level, which is bound to influence Marcos Jnr's foreign policy towards China," Yang added.
...
Joshua Kurlantzick, senior fellow for Southeast Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations, said Macros Jnr was not expected to change the approach to China much, but it remained to be seen how much closer he would move to the US.
...
Shen Shishun, a researcher with the China Institute of International Studies, said many Southeast Asian nations did not want to pick a side.

"The international situation is so complicated at the moment, countries in Southeast Asia, like the Philippines and Singapore, are seeking a balanced policy among the big powers, because siding with one country is certainly detrimental," Shen said.

The entire issue would evaporate if the epic vision of the US and China joining forces against Russia were taken more seriously. But until then, the needless tension will continue.

Some mainstream journalists gradually catch on:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/central-asia-could-key-driving-182844050.html

Quote
Central Asia Could Be the Key to Driving a Wedge Between Russian and China

This is what the US should be concentrating on!

Quote
—basically, the “stans,” from Kazakhstan in the north through Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan, to Pakistan in the south.
...
To Russia, the stans are potential vassals who will restore its Soviet Empire; to China, they are potential collaborators who will host its Belt and Road Initiative.

The conflict in perspectives was on clear display at a conference I attended in Kazakhstan in 2018. With Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev looking on, pro-Russian and pro-Chinese delegates exchanged barbs about the region’s future—until an American journalist dared to question Chinese motives, whereupon everyone combined against him.

The correct approach for America is to side with China against Russia.

Quote
I learned three lessons in Kazakhstan’s capital. The first was that China and Russia are at odds over almost every major issue in the region; the second, that American diplomacy in the geographical pivot has been lackluster, lagging far behind not only Chinese and Russian but also European efforts. The third lesson, however, was that the U.S. therefore has everything to gain and little to lose by reviving the 19th-century “Great Game,” but this time pitting Russia against China rather than Britain.
...
two months of killing have exposed Russia’s military shortcomings, strengthened the western alliance, and stiffened American resolve so much that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says that he intends to see “Russia weakened to the point where it can’t do things like invade Ukraine.”

This string of setbacks can only be pushing Russia toward China, but must also have Xi wondering whether Putin is the sort of friend he wants on the eve of his bid for a third term as Communist Party Secretary. Even at the North Pole, Putin has become a liability. China announced a “Polar Silk Road” in 2018, forging new maritime connections with Europe as the ice melts, but its efforts are now stymied because the Arctic Council, the region’s main governance body, is refusing to deal with Russia. China continues to avoid condemning Russia at the U.N. or calling Putin’s invasion a war, but it does seem to be getting cold feet about its authoritarian friend. The Beijing-backed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank has frozen lending to Russia and Belarus and the energy giant Sinopec has withdrawn its $500 million investment from a Russian gas chemical plant and from efforts to market Russian gas in China.
...
The best way to punish Putin for the violence he has unleashed is by inflaming conflicts of interest that will drive his government and Xi’s apart.

Yes, but in order to be convincing, this has to be done with ideological sincerity on the part of the US in wanting China to gain at Russia's expense.

US ready to use force to defend Taiwan, says President Biden | DW News
Quote
US President Joe Biden said he would be willing to intervene militarily to defend Taiwan if it were attacked. It is one of the strongest statements in support of the island in decades. Biden also warned that China's increasingly assertive stance over Taiwan was "flirting with danger".

"We agreed with the One China policy, we signed on to it... but the idea that it can be taken by force is just not appropriate," he said.

The US president pointed to Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, saying that sanctions against Russia should be continued "in many ways" to send a right message to China over Taiwan.

His statements appear to clash with the US tradition of "strategic ambiguity" as Washington usually avoids making any such explicit guarantees to Taiwan. Taiwan's foreign ministry thanked Biden and the US government for reaffirming their commitment to the island.

Biden is on a five-day Asia tour. After three days in South Korea, he arrived in Tokyo Monday morning, where he launched a new regional economic plan involving 12 Indo-Pacific states.

The Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, or IPEF, provides a means for partner countries to deal with key issues including climate change, supply chain and digital trade, but does not extend to seeking to negotiate tariffs or ease market access.

Common sense:

https://us.yahoo.com/news/ex-malaysia-pm-us-led-122836867.html

Quote
TOKYO (AP) — Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad criticized a new U.S.-led economic grouping on Friday, saying it is intended to isolate China, and won't benefit regional economic growth without Beijing.
...
“China is a big trading partner for Malaysia, we don’t want to see any tension, any conflict with China and we hope that the U.S. will realize that China is there, it’s not going to disappear, and we have to live with China, which is now richer than most countries in the world,” he said at “The Future of Asia,” a conference organized by Nikkei Inc.
...
Mahathir, 96, who served as Malaysia's fourth and seven prime ministers, was seen for many years as a de facto spokesperson for less developed countries and frequently criticized the West. He remains an influential figure in Malaysia.

I have been saying this since the TPP days:

China Threatens War I Beijing's Face To Face Warning To US Over Support To Taiwan's Independence Bid
Quote
Chinese and US defence chiefs, Wei Fenghe and Lloyd Austin, held their first face-to-face meeting in Singapore on June 10. The Taiwan issue dominated the talks held on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore.
At the meeting, Beijing reportedly threatened to “crush” any “independence plot” in the self-ruled Island. In response, Washington urged China not carry out “destabilising actions” near Taiwan.

US-China tensions, maritime security set to come under spotlight at Shangri-La Dialogue

Intensifying competition between the US and China is the backdrop for what is billed as Asia’s premier defence summit. But that is not all that is up for discussion at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, the first one since the COVID-19 pandemic. How likely is a Chinese invasion of Taiwan? | DW News
Quote
The war in Ukraine has forced Taiwan to re-focus on how it defends itself from a possible Chinese invasion.

In recent months, Beijing has stepped up military incursions into Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone, raising alert levels on the island.

Taipei is now thinking of improving training for its nearly two million reserve force, investing in specialised weapons and civil defense. And there’s also a greater willingness among people to be prepared to take up weapons should the time come.

China will fight to the very end to stop Taiwan independence: Defence minister | Shangri-La Dialogue
Quote
China will "fight to the very end" to stop Taiwan from declaring independence, Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe said in a speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue on Sunday (Jun 12).

"We will fight at all cost and we will fight to the very end. This is the only choice for China," General Wei said.

His speech came a day after US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said China was becoming "more coercive and aggressive" in its approach to its territorial claims in the region.

On Sunday, General Wei said Beijing firmly rejects the US' "smearing accusations and even threats" against China.

Global affairs should be handled through consultation by all stakeholders instead of being dictated by just one country or a small group of countries, he said, adding: "No one or no group of countries should impose its will on others or bully others under the guise of multilateralism."

General Wei said the United States' Indo-Pacific strategy is an attempt to build an exclusive small group in the name of a free and open Pacific to "hijack countries in the region and target one specific country". It is a strategy to "create conflict and confrontation to contain and encircle others", he said.

This is good, at least:

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/us-makes-asia-inroads-playing-223751604.html

Quote
(Bloomberg) -- The US sought to bolster its support in Asia this weekend by reassuring nations they don’t need to join a coalition against China
...
It represented a break from the Trump administration pressing nations to take sides on the use of 5G equipment from Huawei, one of China’s most strategically important companies, a position that rankled many at the last gathering of defense officials in 2019.
...
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations “will take comfort that both have said, ‘There is no need to choose. We don’t want you to choose,’” Singaporean Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen said. “But whether that’s the reality, I think only the facts will speak for themselves.”

But the only true way to ensure there is no need to choose between the US and China is when the two are explicitly on the same side. This requires a credible common enemy.

Quote
Fareed argues that the best way for the US to keep China in check is to ensure that Russia is defeated in Ukraine. #CNN #News

The problem with this approach is that it is about "keeping China in check" as opposed to positively helping China. Yes, we should ensure Russia is defeated, but not only in Ukraine, but also in Outer Manchuria (which is far more valuable than Taiwan materially). Russia is still defeated, but the narrative changes completely, especially if the US sends weapons to help China take back its territory the same way it is currently sending weapons to help Ukraine take back its territory.
