Mind-blowing side-by-side photos reveal the hidden cost of mowing your lawn
...
The photo of the unmowed area showed the thermometer reading 25.5 degrees Celsius, or just under 78 degrees Fahrenheit. But the temperature of the mown part of the lawn was a whopping 34.3 Celsius (around 94 degrees Fahrenheit) almost 10 degrees hotter in Celsius and almost 20 degrees higher in Fahrenheit.

Some success:

California legislators passed a water-saving bill banning the use of drinking water on decorative grass outside businesses and along streets.
Los Angeles Times · latimes.com

Quote
Outdoor watering accounts for roughly half of total water use in Southern Californias cities and suburbs, and a large portion of that water is sprayed from sprinklers to keep grass green.

Under a bill passed by state legislators this week, California will soon outlaw using drinking water for some of those vast expanses of grass the purely decorative patches of green that are mowed but never walked on or used for recreation.

Grass covers an estimated 218,000 acres in the Metropolitan Water District of Southern Californias six-county area. Nearly a quarter of that, or up to 51,000 acres, is categorized as nonfunctional turf the sort of grass that fills spaces along roads and sidewalks, in front of businesses, and around parking lots.

This unused grass covers an area roughly 12 times the size of Griffith Park. By eliminating this grass and replacing it with landscaping that fits Southern Californias arid climate, the district estimates the region could reduce total water use by nearly 10%.
...
Ortega said the legislation is overdue.

Wasteful outdoor irrigation is a major challenge to our ability to adapt to climate change, Ortega said.
...
In cities across the West, areas with unused grass have become a major target for urban water managers as they look for ways to quickly and permanently reduce water use. Some officials have been talking about nonfunctional turf so much that they abbreviate it with the acronym NFT.

The efforts to move away from grass also reflect a shift in aesthetics and values, linked to growing scarcity and simple economics. Where once it might have seemed acceptable to line suburban streets with lush landscapes reminiscent of English estates, there is now widespread agreement that it doesnt make sense for cities to pump water long distances and treat it to drinking water standards only to spray it on grass that serves no real purpose.

Last year, the leaders of 30 water agencies that supply cities from Denver to San Diego signed an agreement setting a goal of removing 30% of the existing nonfunctional grass and replacing it with drought- and climate-resilient landscaping, while also maintaining trees.

This realization seems to be catching on:

How to cool our homes (even without ACs)
Quote
As the planet gets hotter, more people use air conditioners to keep cool. Running these takes lots of energy, which means emissions that then further speed up global warming. Rethinking our architecture and using more efficient cooling technologies could help us break this vicious circle.

Building the apartments close enough to shade one another may actually be prudent as a way to reduce heating from sunlight. If they were built further apart such that none of them were shaded, they would heat up even more.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/heritage-status-home-toronto-caldecott-1.7163883

Quote
A couple in an affluent midtown Toronto neighbourhood is asking the city to remove the heritage designation from their century home because they say the original owner was racist.

The two-and-a-half storey 9,000-square foot house in the Yonge and St. Clair area, was built in 1906 for Stapleton Pitt Caldecott, a former Toronto Board of Trade president who was opposed to immigration, a University of Toronto historian says.
...

...
The board turned down the couple's request
...
A city staff report to the TPB concluded the home's designation had little to do with its association with Caldecott. Instead, the report says the home is worth preserving because it was designed by prominent Toronto architect Eden Smith and because of the unique structural qualities he brought to the building.

"Staff maintain that the property is valued as a fine representative example of an early 20th century house form building designed in the Period Revival style influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement,"

The fundamental argument that should be made is that no Western-style building should have heritage designation in Canada, as otherwise would be an affirmation of colonialism.

Quote
Akladios said that within weeks he told the couple that if they wanted to object to the house's heritage designation, they'd be better off focusing on the building's architectural merits than on Caldecott, because he felt they'd have a better chance challenging the designation on those grounds.

Western architecture needs to be eradicated from Canada (and all other former Western colonial possessions) ASAP.

Quote
Another board member, Paul Cordingley, told last week's meeting the Mahesan-Earle application raises significant points about what a heritage designation means.

"I think we have to find a way of disengaging preservation from celebrating," he said. "Because I would not want anyone to think that if we're trying to maintain the designation of this house, that we are celebrating or downplaying what goes along with that."

If you want to preserve it, you are saying the house belongs here. But such a house only got built because of Western colonialism. Therefore you are saying you are glad Western colonialism happened. So there is no disengaging preservation from celebration.

Quote
As for whether the couple is looking to renovate or demolish the house, Earle told CBC Toronto they're not looking to have the designation removed "as a tactic."

"I have no plans of developing this house or changing this house," she told CBC Toronto.

I suggest you demolish it.

ACs are not a solution to heat. You don't magically create cool air without heating something else. At nights, temperatures in big cities are raised by over 1C b.c of continuous AC usage.

Start fixing green cover, move away from cars, stop putting up glass towers to beat this.

Disappearing fast... but traditional Indian rural homes designed around a central courtyard (aangan) embodied a perfect harmony of functionality, sustainability and strong family bond..... Adding multiple floors for increased space & modern needs and improving aesthetics can still bring them back.

Short answer: Eurocentrism.

In the 17th century multi-faceted crystals that could reflect light from the candles were used to decorate chandelier and they were called chandeliers de crystal in France.[8] The chandeliers produced in France in the 17th century were in the French Baroque style, and rococo in the 18th century. French rock crystal chandeliers found their finest expression under Louis XIV, as exemplified by chandeliers at the Palace of Versailles.[39] Rock crystal began to be replaced by cut glass in the late 17th century.[8] and examples of chandeliers made with rock crystal as well as Bohemian glass can be found in the Palace of Versailles.[40]
...
The 19th century was a period of great changes and development; the industrial revolution and the growth of wealth from the industries greatly increased the market for chandeliers, new methods of lighting and better techniques of production emerged, and countries such as the United States also became significant producers of chandeliers.[49] New styles and more complex and elaborate chandeliers also appeared, and production of chandeliers reached a peak in the 19th century. France, which only started producing significant amount of high-quality glass in the late 18th century, became renown as a producer of the finest quality chandeliers. One of the best-known manufacturers, Baccarat, started making chandeliers in 1824. In England, Perry & Co. produced a large quantity of chandeliers, while F. & C. Osler was known for producing spectacular chandeliers, the great proportion of which went to India, the richest market for chandeliers at that time.[8]

This is confusing. The post showing Guangzhou is accurate in pointing out that China is not collapsing. The reply suggesting that China would be better with less infrastructure was posted by a tweeter who in other posts praises China's infrastructure:

I also like the public transportation aspect of China's infrastructure, but not the buildings.

I do not side with agentsaffron over spiritofho on all issues, but spiritofho is a noted False Leftist "New China" fan, and his purpose of the tweet is not just to show that China is not collapsing, but to implicitly praise the Western infrastructure, while Agent Saffron (although praising high tech public transportation) has praised walkable infrastructure in the past:
Saudi is already building a traditional walkable version of ancient Diriyah city. We can also remake many traditional Indian cities as walkable and vehicle free.
