Tumble driers (another Western invention, of course) are even more absurdly wasteful; I never saw any reason to use them. What is wrong with simply letting laundry dry by itself?

Yet I know of some Western residential compounds where it is actually forbidden to dry laundry outdoors, supposedly for the sake of maintaining the view!

another benefit to hanging laundry outdoors to dry, which I forgot to mention last time, is that it considerably cools the air in the vicinity from evaporation of the water absorbing ambient heat! This effect is especially beneficial during summer.

But of course Westerners would rather dry using a tumble drier and cool using an air conditioner, both of which actually generate additional heat. This is how inferior Western civilization is.
