Mahathir, who served as Malaysian premier twice for a total of 24 years, said that French President Emmanuel Macron was "not showing that he is civilised", adding he was "very primitive".

"The French should teach their people to respect other people's feelings. Since you have blamed all Muslims and the Muslims' religion for what was done by one angry person, the Muslims have a right to punish the French.

"The boycott cannot compensate the wrongs committed by the French all these years."

To elaborate, France is still using the same flag as it used during the colonial era:

and still keeping in its museums the stuff it stole during the colonial era. How then can the French expect to be seen by default as anything other than people proud of their colonial past, and treated accordingly? If France wants change, it should start by changing its flag:
