The Indo-European warrior initiation rite of passage often included the sacrifice of a dog or a wolf. A boy might have to kill his own beloved dog in order to become a man.

I once read somewhere that some Russian special forces training involved raising a kitten and then killing it, for comparable reasons. Quite frankly, that sounded like propaganda, but since the ritual existed in ancient times, who knows?
