Racism, discrimination may be to blame for immigrants’ dissatisfaction with Canada: advocates

Quote

More than one-third of recent immigrants to Canada say living here has been worse than expected, according to a new Leger poll done exclusively for OMNI News.

Racism and discrimination may be playing a role.

More than half of the respondents say they’ve experienced or witnessed racism and discrimination.

“I work with a lot of people who are immigrants and they have a lot of dreams about coming to Canada,” said Niemi. “And one of the dreams is that Canada is a society that’s fair, that’s based on equality, that does not have the kind of ethnic and religious strife that they live in their countries of origin.

“And when they come here, they will encounter discrimination, particularly in employment and in housing. This is where they start to feel a little bit less optimistic and less hopeful about society as a whole.”

“They realize over time that perhaps it’s the skin colour, the race that holds them back, that makes them get less opportunities than they expected,” said Niemi.

“This is something that could be a fact, that it impedes integration and also satisfaction as newcomers. Because they feel that these are the barriers that they didn’t expect.”

A quarter of those polled say they’ve experienced or witnessed religious discrimination.

Conseil Migrant’s Carlos Rojas, an advocate for migrants’ rights for more than 20 years, says racial profiling needs to be addressed.

When people see you, they act in different way,” said Rojas

“When you arrive here, the first years of your staying in Canada is overwhelming… I can tell you the amount of information that you have to handle and amount of things that you have to do is just overwhelming.”

Muslim group calls on Ottawa to lift cap on program allowing Palestinians to flee to Canada

Quote

The National Council of Canadian Muslims is calling on the federal government to remove a cap on the number of Palestinians who can seek refuge with their Canadian extended family members from the violence in the Gaza Strip.

The special extended family program for people in Gaza is set to launch next week. Palestinian Canadians pleaded for months for help from the federal government to rescue their loved ones from the Israel-Hamas war.

The program offers visas to a maximum of 1,000 Palestinians, which would allow them to take refuge in Canada for three years if their families are willing to support them financially during that time.

"There should not be a cap," said Uthman Quick, the organization's director of communications.

The cap "takes into consideration the volatility on the ground and the difficulty that Canada and like-minded countries are having in moving people from Gaza to Egypt," Immigration Department spokesperson Matthew Krupovich said in an email statement Tuesday.

Toronto immigration lawyer Yameena Ansari said she believes the cap vastly underestimates the number of people who need help.

Ansari advocated for the policy as part of an ad hoc group of immigration lawyers called the Gaza Family Reunification Project.

"Just between the lawyers in this group, we know more than 1,000 applicants," said Ansari, who called the cap "heinous."

Cap will result in 'battle royale' for visas, lawyer says

"What's at stake is — and I want to put this really bluntly — is your family going to live or are they going to die?" Ansari said.

Most people in Gaza don't want to leave, Quick said, and they want to know that if they do flee to Canada, they'll have the right to return home when the conflict is over.

What’s behind the dramatic shift in Canadian public opinion about immigration levels?

Quote

Over the last few years, Environics public opinion data also indicated Canadians felt very positively about immigrants and immigration levels.

Something changed in 2023.

There is a large body of research examining how perceived threat/competition predicts attitudes toward immigrants and immigration.

This research shows that negative attitudes toward immigrants can develop when situational factors — for example, housing shortages, inflationary pressures and a rise in anti-immigration ideologies — combine to create perceptions of group competition.

Perceived competition may be rooted in real or imagined national economic challenges, as well as beliefs about access to housing, employment and other resources.

Ottawa seeking unprecedented level of personal details from Palestinian migrants, lawyers say

Quote

immigration lawyers say Ottawa is asking for an unprecedented level of personal information from prospective migrants.

"It's strikingly different than what is ordinarily required for a visitor visa application," said immigration lawyer Pantea Jafari. "[The federal government] is asking for significantly more information than any of those applications, and even more than any permanent resident's application."

The form asks for "a full and detailed employment history, since the age of 16 years, including exact dates, description and details on your roles and responsibilities, name(s) of supervisors(s), reason for leaving the job, and any disciplinary issues."

It also requires a "description" of, and explanations for, "any scars or injuries which have required medical attention." The form asks applicants to list all social media accounts, former phone numbers and email addresses associated with a prospective migrant, along with passport information.

Jafari said that's a lot of information to ask of people who are fleeing for their lives.

"It's an incredibly difficult position to put an already vulnerable population into, and I just can't imagine being anyone that needs to fill this out right now. I can't imagine the hardship that they're experiencing," she said.

Adam Sadinsky of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers said it took him six hours recently to help a family of four gather all this information. He said it would be a lot for anyone struggling with unreliable internet access in Gaza.

Aidan Simardone, who also practices immigration law, said the federal government's approach to migrants from Gaza betrays a double standard.

He pointed out that Ukrainians fleeing Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 were not asked such detailed questions, despite the documented existence of a group with neo-Nazi ties, the Azov Battalion, operating in Ukraine.

In an interview with CBC's Ottawa Morning on Thursday, Miller said it's reasonable to ask for these details given the security concerns.

"I don't think Canadians would forgive us if we let in someone that was not the person we wanted to be, and turned out to be a terrorist," he said.

Toronto police chief reverses course, identifies 'terrorist flag' waved at demonstration

Quote

A day after refusing to identify the "terrorist flag" held at a demonstration last weekend that led to charges being laid against a man for public incitement of hatred, Toronto's police chief said the flag belongs to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

At a Toronto Police Services Board meeting Thursday, police announced that a 41-year-old man was charged with public incitement of hatred for allegedly waving the flag while marching through the city's downtown Sunday.

Demkiw called the charge "unprecedented," noting the "very high threshold" to charge anyone with a hate propaganda offence.

Elementary school warns parents about student racial slurs

Quote

Parents at an elementary school in Ottawa are being asked to speak to their children about respect and kindness because primary-age students had used racial slurs.

While the board described these incidents as isolated, Taylor said based on her experience racist incidents in schools often go unreported, especially if they're not overheard by a staff member.

Trudeau Government Authorized $28.5 Million Of New Military Exports To Israel Since October

Quote

The Trudeau government authorized at least $28.5 million of new permits for military exports to Israel during the first two months of the state’s brutal war on Gaza

“It’s not only troubling that Canadian officials have continued to authorize arms transfers since the onset of Israel’s operation, but also that the value of those transfers is in the tens of millions.”

These combined values exceed that of total Canadian arms exports to Israel for any year on record.”

The newly issued permits include four worth a combined total of $1.7 million that authorize the sale of, among other items, goods under an export category that includes “bombs, torpedoes, rockets, missiles, other explosive devices and charges and related equipment and accessories, and specially designed components.”

Michael Bueckert, vice president of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME), called the military exports to Israel “absolutely scandalous.”

“It’s almost as if Canada is accelerating its arms export authorization process amid a genocidal campaign,” he said.

Canadian ministers have been accused of deliberately sowing confusion about military exports to Israel

‘Go back to Hong Kong’ jibe sparks debate on level of racism in Canada

Quote

Canadian city of Richmond in spotlight after woman filmed telling Asian man to ‘go back to Hong Kong’ during angry exchange at local council meeting

A widely shared video originally posted by online group Neighbours of Richmond shows a white woman in favour of the motion accosting an elderly Asian man during the rally and describing him as “what’s wrong with Canada”.

You do not belong here. Go back to Hong Kong,” the woman says in the video.

Community leaders were quick to rebuke the woman’s comments, even as the country is grappling with fears of a gradual shift from its traditional acceptance of immigrants.

“Racism has no place in our society and it is disheartening to witness such behaviour,” said Chak Au, a Richmond city councillor who once taught at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and moved to Canada in 1988.

“This incident underscores the urgent need for collective action against racism,” he said. “t is an essential endeavour for fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.”

Hidden Figures: New podcast shines a light on racism in academia

Quote

The Hidden Figures Project team, which includes Nathan Andrews and Akalya Kandiah from the department of political science, has been exploring how racism and Whiteness occur in the social and natural sciences in Canada.

“The main rationale is informed by the need to challenge the academic status quo by critically evaluating how practices that have historically marginalized certain scholars persist, how these practices remain part of broader systemic injustices and what can be done about it to make our disciplinary fields more inclusive.”

On being explicit about anti-Black racism in Canada

Quote

Experts showcased evidence of systemic discrimination against the Black population in Canada

Racism remains a major issue, with 58% of Black people aged 15 years or older reporting discrimination. Further, 50% of Black employees reported that they have experienced discrimination in promotional processes.

Despite bridging the education gap with almost identical rates of post-secondary education when compared to the rest of the population, Black Canadians have the highest rate of underemployment for any Canadian-educated racialized group

The United Nations Human Rights Commission expressed serious concerns about the Canadian justice system for the way Black people are treated. Black people in Canada face over-policing and are over-incarcerated. “One of the most devastating indications of the persistence and perniciousness of anti-Black racism is the finding that the Canadian Human Rights Commission had discriminated against their Black and racialized employees,” Cukier said.

Governments at all levels and private sector companies now are explicit in their commitments to fighting anti-Black racism. If you don't name the problem, you can't forge solutions.”

Despite the evidence pointing to systemic discrimination, Cukier said the backlash directed against the Black population and equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) efforts is growing. She pointed to a recent poll from Global News where almost one-half of respondents said that diversity is causing Canada to change in ways they don't like.

There are reports of upward harassment, microaggressions and unconscious bias. “We have seen Black women rise, despite the odds, into leadership roles, only to be  targeted, held to impossible standards and then pushed over what we refer to as ‘the glass cliff,’” she said.
