It's OK for admissions to be "white":

https://www.yahoo.com/news/harvard-admissions-data-shows-america-030249515.html

Quote
America’s most elite colleges and universities really don’t want the public to take a peek behind the curtain and get a better understanding of who gets admitted and why. And it’s not for the reasons you might think.

The urban legend endures that any Latino or African-American who applies to one of these ultra-selective schools can write their own ticket. But the truth is, the people who get the lion’s share of those tickets, who issue the tickets, and who, in fact, run the ticket booth are white.

The real pigs at the trough are white people who have connections, make donations or otherwise encourage wealthy alumni boosters to send more checks. T’was always thus.

A new study proves what the relatively few students of color who will ever have the chance to attend selective colleges and universities have long suspected: Despite what people call “imposter syndrome”—i.e., the insecurity that some Latinos and African Americans feel about whether they deserve the opportunities they’ve been afforded—they aren't imposters at all. Far from it. Rather, they’re among the most deserving of admission.

The numbers show that, for the most part, students of color had to work harder in high school to get into these elite schools than white ones with hook-ups, deep pockets or alumni pedigrees.

Moreover, in many cases, this pattern will continue throughout their entire professional lives. Merit only gets you so far.
...
Researchers from Duke University, the University of Georgia, and the University of Oklahoma dove into those documents and analyzed something that looms large in the admissions process of elite schools yet is rarely talked about: admissions preferences for recruited athletes, legacies, those on the “dean’s interest list” (read: donors), and children of faculty and staff—a group collectively referred to by the unwieldy acronym of ALDC).

Using data from the Harvard lawsuit on 166,727 U.S. applicants to Harvard between 2009-2014, the professors did a good job of breaking down who has been getting in and why they’ve been getting in.

According to their findings, more than 43 percent of the white students admitted were ALDC. But the share for African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos was less than 16 percent. Furthermore, the research shows, roughly three-quarters of white ALDC admits would have been rejected if not for their ALDC status. Finally, eliminating preferences for athletes and legacies would make the pool of admitted students much less white.

As a Mexican American who went to Harvard, I hear only one thing in these findings: vindication.

You see, Latino and African American students who go to Harvard, or other highly selective college and universities, tend to arrive on campus with a ringing in their ears. It’s the sound they heard in high school of jealous white classmates sniping that if they hadn’t been people of color, they wouldn’t have gotten in.
...
When I walked through Johnston Gate and into Harvard Yard in the Fall of 1985, I was one of just 35 Mexican Americans in a class of about 1,600 undergraduates. That’s only about 2 percent. Add in Puerto Ricans, Cuban-Americans, Colombians and others, and the total number of Latinos might have reached 5 percent.

Most of us were straight-A valedictorians, student body presidents, self-starters who had rocketed through high school kicking ass and taking names.

Meanwhile, 75 percent of Harvard’s student body was at that point still white.

Which reminds me of the second sound that people of color often hear in our heads as we make our way through the college experience. As we associate with our white classmates, it sometimes occurs to us that some of these people aren’t all that. A lot of them don’t seem that smart. They don’t spend a lot of time in the library, and yet they walk around campus with an impenetrable air of confidence. Indeed, some appear to have simply skated through life with help from their parents, from society, and ultimately from the admissions office.

Now thanks to a very important study, my friends and I know that we weren’t imagining things. There were, in fact, some imposters on campus. And now we know who they were.

To put it another way, Harvard's admissions policy is as un-American as is its architecture:

Watching European nations open their arms to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians in less than a week, the father of three can't help but compare their fates.

"We are wondering, why were Ukrainians welcome in all countries while we, Syrian refugees, are still in tents and remain under the snow, facing death, and no one is looking to us?" he told Reuters in a refugee centre where 25 families are sheltered on the edge of the Mediterranean city of Sidon.

In the Arab world, where 12 million Syrians have been uprooted by war, critics ranging from Hariri to activists and cartoonists contrast the Western reaction to the refugee crisis triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine with the way Europe sought to hold back Syrian and other refugees in 2015.

Some recalled images of refugees walking for days in harsh weather, or losing lives in perilous sea crossings as they tried to breach Europe's borders.

On Monday, four days after Russia launched its attack, the European Union said at least 400,000 refugees had entered the bloc from Ukraine, which has land borders with four EU states.

Millions more are expected and the EU is preparing measures which would offer temporary residence permits as well as access to employment and social welfare - a swift opening of its doors at odds with its response to wars in Syria and elsewhere.

Where are the usual voices complaining that flooding the market with labour will lower wages, and that providing social services to people who never paid taxes into the system is foolish? They are suddenly all looking the other way now that the beneficiaries are "whites".

French professor drives 1,200 miles to offer his house to Ukrainian refugees

VYSNE NEMECKE, Slovakia (Reuters) - When Russia invaded Ukraine last week French professor Yves Gineste didn't think twice - he set off on a four-day drive to the eastern edge of Slovakia to offer his Perpignan house to refugees.

Bearing a cardboard sign seeking "One family for a house in France, travel and house free", he registered with a charity at Vysne Nemecke, a crossing on the Slovakia-Ukraine border.

A few hours later he was helping 26-year-old manicurist Nastia Kiselyova, along with a friend travelling with her daughter and niece, load their belongings into his camper van prior to heading back the around 2,000 km (1,200 miles) to southwest France.

On hearing of the invasion "I could not believe it," the 70-year-old, a professor in medical research who works six months of the year at Kyoto University and normally rents the Perpignan house out, told Reuters.

There have been Afghan, Syrian and other refugees in and around Slovakia for a long time. Why didn't Gineste offer his house to any of them all this time?

A Romanian restaurant serves up to 100 free meals a day to Ukrainian refugees — its staff often break down in tears over the escalating crisis
...
In addition to providing free meals to Ukrainian refugees, Cristea said she organized a donation of food cans, bottled water, and packaged sweets for them. These efforts have been matched with "hundreds or thousands of activities of this kind" all across Romania, she added.

"There are many that are doing more, especially in northern Romania, where most of the Ukrainians arrived," Cristea said.

Does anyone want to guess whether or not they treated Afghan etc. refugees similarly? Does anyone want to guess why not?

If we had been treating Muslim or “Middle Eastern” migrants like this from the beginning, I would wager that there’d currently be a lot less of the “extremism” and general exclusionary attitudes that rightists accuse these migrants of. But as usual, rightists prefer to unwittingly create the problem/feedback loop, and then blame it on someone else.

Every country which has displayed this double-standard should be populated 100% by "non-whites".

Quote
VESZPREM, Hungary, March 9 (Reuters) - Two days after arriving from the bombarded outskirts of Kyiv following a gruelling journey, 24-year-old Ukrainian Olga Yasnopolska signed a contract to work for a large German automotive parts supplier in western Hungary.

Meanwhile, "non-white" refugees are frequently prohibited from getting jobs despite having been in a country for years.

Quote
Yasnopolska, who worked for the railways in Ukraine, said the job contract gave her some sense of security.

"It's a relief that we have somewhere to stay and now I have a job, and we are in safety," she said, with a tired, faint smile.

Translation: it's OK to be a "white" refugee.

Quote
She also hopes to find a job soon that will allow her to take care of her baby.

I am sure she will get one rather quickly. All the same people who deliberately make life miserable for "non-whites" will go out of their way to help her.

Quote
'UKRAINIAN-FRIENDLY JOBS'

In the wake of the European Union's 2015 migration crisis some eastern members, led by Poland and Hungary, refused to take in people fleeing war and poverty, saying an influx from Africa and the Middle East would threaten their Christian traditions.

But hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians had been working in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic even before the current exodus.

Since last year, companies across the manufacturing, information technology and construction sectors in the region have been jostling to attract employees as their economies rebounded fast from the COVID-19 induced slump.

Czech job vacancies climbed to a record high of nearly 364,000 in February. Romanian vacancies reached 45,600 in the fourth quarter of 2021, up by 10,000 in annual terms.

In Poland, which has been a top destination for Ukrainian workers for years and has received more than 1.3 million refugees since the war began, employers reported 116,500 job vacancies in February.

Work agencies and companies are now hoping to tap into the large pool of refugees, trying to arrange accommodation for Ukrainian workers' family members and their children.

None of which they did with "non-white" refugees.

Quote
"This 1 million women with children is in reality about half a million people who can actually enter the workforce and the Polish economy will be able to absorb them easily within a few, three or four months," said Krzysztof Inglot of the Employers of Poland Association.

You did not say this when the refugees were "non-white".

Quote
BestJobs, a Romanian recruitment platform with 32,000 open positions, has introduced a "Ukrainian friendly jobs" tag.

Jitka Souckova, marketing director of Grafton Recruitment in Prague, said there were many jobs in manufacturing or logistics, where Ukrainians could work even without speaking Czech.

Yet the frequently stated reason for not letting "non-white" refugees get jobs was because they were not fluent in the local language. Supposedly, a worker lacking fluency in the local language would endanger the other workers in case of fire hazards and other emergencies. What happened to all that?

Quote
Gabor Berta, head of the Man at Work temp agency office in Veszprem, through which Yasnopolska found her job, said the biggest problem was finding accommodation for all the Ukrainian workers they have placed and their families.

Meanwhile, many "non-white" refugees are still living in tents, and the camps are bulldozed once every few months.

Quote
"This situation is different," he said. "Here you cannot say to the Ukrainian employee that 'I am sorry I have too many workers now', or 'sorry we need to halt production, please can you go home'. Now, they cannot go home."

You say all of this just fine to "non-whites". The situation is certainly different when the refugees are "whites'.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/two-refugees-both-polands-border-114324482.html

Quote
Two Refugees, Both on Poland's Border. But Worlds Apart.

KUZNICA, Poland — On the day war broke out in Ukraine, Albagir, a 22-year-old refugee from Sudan, was lying on the frozen forest floor at the gateway to Poland, trying to stay alive.

Drones sent by the Polish border patrol were looking for him. So were helicopters. It was night, with subzero temperatures and snow everywhere. Albagir, a pre-med student, and a small band of African refugees were trying to sneak into Poland, down to the last few shriveled dates in their pockets.

“We were losing hope,” he said.

That same night in a small town near Odesa, Katya Maslova, 21, grabbed a suitcase and her tablet, which she uses for her animation work, and jumped with her family into a burgundy Toyota RAV4. They rushed off in a four-car convoy with eight adults and five children, part of the frantic exodus of people trying to escape war-torn Ukraine.

“At that point, we didn’t know where we were going,” she said.

Over the next two weeks, what would happen to these two refugees crossing into the same country at the same time, both about the same age, could not stand in starker contrast. Albagir was punched in the face, called racial slurs and left in the hands of a border guard who, Albagir said, brutally beat him and seemed to enjoy doing it. Katya wakes up every day to a stocked fridge and fresh bread on the table, thanks to a man she calls a saint.

Ethnonepotist =/= saint

Quote
Their disparate experiences underscore the inequalities of Europe’s refugee crisis. They are victims of two very different geopolitical events but are pursuing the same mission — escape from the ravages of war. As Ukraine presents Europe with its greatest surge of refugees in decades, many conflicts continue to burn in the Middle East and Africa. Depending on which war a person is fleeing, the welcome will be very different.

From the instant they cross into Poland, Ukrainian refugees such as Maslova are treated to live piano music, bottomless bowls of borscht and, often, a warm bed. And that’s just the beginning. They can fly for free all across Europe on Hungary’s Wizz Air. In Germany, crowds line up at train stations, waving Ukrainian flags. All European Union countries now allow them to stay for up to three years.

Watching all this on a TV in a safe house in th

e Polish countryside, where it’s too dangerous for him to even step outside, Albagir, who asked that his last name not be used because he crossed the border illegally, said he was almost in a state of shock.

“Why don’t we see this caring and this love? Why?” he asked. “Are Ukrainians better than us? I don’t know. Why?”

No, you are better than them. Their ancestral civilization created almost all of the problems in the world today:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/news/climate-weather-and-climate-effects-2020-and-beyond/

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/true-left-vs-right/western-civilization-is-a-health-hazard/

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/true-left-vs-right/if-western-civilization-does-not-die-soon/

etc.

Your ancestral civilization did not. But they are "white", and their ancestral civilization thinks it's OK to be "white". That is why.

Quote
What Albagir experienced has been repeated countless times, from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel, as European governments have made it difficult for migrants from Africa and the Middle East to enter their countries — sometimes using excessive force to keep them out.
...
“This is the first time we are seeing such contrast between the treatment of different groups of refugees,” said Camille Le Coz, a migration analyst in Brussels, who added that Europeans see Ukrainians as being “like us.”
...
Maslova’s family walked into the kitchen and saw the three-course meal that their hosts had prepared for them, and cried. They stepped into the bathroom to a row of brand-new toothbrushes, soaps and shampoos, and cried. They saw freshly washed sheets, towels and blankets lined up on their beds, and cried.
...
A few nights later, while Maslova and her family were admiring a stack of toys that their hosts brought for the children, Albagir and three men with whom he was traveling were arrested. They had made it across the Polish border undetected, but the driver they hired to get them to Germany forgot to turn on his headlights and was stopped. Albagir said Polish police officers stole their SIM cards and power banks; disabled their phones (so they couldn’t call for help); and drove them back to the place they dreaded: the forest.

At least 19 people have frozen to death in recent months trying to get into Poland after Polish border guards pushed them back into this forest, human rights groups say.

Polish officials insisted it was not their fault.
...
“Go! Go!” the Polish guards yelled at Albagir’s group, shoving them at gunpoint toward a barbed-wire fence in an isolated part of the forest, Albagir said. The guards threw one of the men into the fence so hard that he sliced open his hand, Albagir said. When interviewed, he showed a gash mark between his fingers.
...
“He punched us, he kicked us, he threw us down, he hit us with sticks,” Albagir said.

He said there was one light-skinned Kurd detained in the garage with them whom the soldier didn’t touch.
...
For Maslova’s family, the treatment just gets better and better. Poterek enrolled her brother and sister in a primary school — the Polish government has extended free education and health care to Ukrainian refugees.

“It seems like the whole country is slightly bending the rules for Ukrainians,” said Maslova, after a doctor refused to accept payment for a visit.

...
Last Thursday, Janusz Poterek spoke to a friend about finding Maslova a job as a translator.

That same afternoon, Albagir and the others made it to a safe house in Warsaw. Once again, they were told not to step outside.

When do we nuke Poland?

https://us.yahoo.com/news/does-the-ukrainian-refugee-response-expose-a-european-double-standard-experts-weigh-in-212817039.html

Quote
The reception of Ukrainian refugees by European countries has been vastly different from previous refugee crises where European countries were largely resistant to being a safe haven for those escaping persecution, including the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis, where since 2015 more than 1 million Syrians have sought refuge in Europe with little to no support.

“It's a striking difference,” Lamis Abdelaaty, a professor of political science at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, told Yahoo News.
...
some critics see a double standard in how Ukrainian refugees are being treated compared with asylum seekers from other countries.

Poland, which has accepted more than 60% of the 3 million Ukrainian refugees, was a big detractor of Syrian refugees just a few years ago. The leader of Poland's conservative party and current deputy prime minister, Jarosław Kaczyński, has been one of the most outspoken critics against refugees. In 2017, he said that accepting Syrians would be dangerous and would "completely change our culture and radically lower the level of safety in our country."

Now European leaders are praising the continent’s largely unified response.

“The response by Europe has been remarkable,” the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said in a statement.
...
“Since the Syria crisis erupted more than 10 years ago, we’ve seen that there was a high level of reluctancy from Europeans to share the burden amongst themselves,” she said.

Abdelaaty also notes a striking difference in the framing of the Syrian refugee crisis and the Ukrainian refugee crisis.

“In 2016, [the Syrian refugee influx] was framed as a huge ‘crisis for Europe,’ and it was a crisis for how European countries were going to respond to this,” she said, adding that Syrians were labeled as migrants, not refugees, as a way to “delegitimize their request for protection.”

Abdelaaty believes that the Ukrainian crisis is being framed in such a way that leads others to have empathy for those fleeing the conflict
...
However, not all refugees fleeing Ukraine have had the same experience. African and Indian men and women, many of whom went to Ukraine to further their education, have regularly reported being denied space on trains or buses or faced ridicule at the border. They have complained of a sometimes hostile reception from Ukrainian authorities and officials from other European countries that have by and large taken in scores of Ukrainians.

This disparity in treatment, for many, illustrates a hypocritical attitude they say has always been present across Europe.
...
“There was no one offering their homes to Black people, no one offering to pick up the Black individuals. There was a tremendous amount of people offering help and support, but I feel like it was limited to Ukrainian nationals alone. And we know what that means. It’s excluding a group of people.

NEVER FORGIVE. NEVER FORGET.

Quote
Refugees From Other Wars Want to Know Why White Ukrainians Get VIP Treatment

Hint: it is not because they are Ukrainians.

Quote
ROME—The queue outside the Baobob refugee soup kitchen in central Rome is filled with desperate migrants and refugees every single day of the week. In recent months, most are from Afghanistan and war-torn African nations like Somalia, Sudan and the Tigray region of Ethiopia. There aren’t any Ukrainian war refugees standing in the cold, though. They have been welcomed into warm homes and care facilities. “They are white, so they get special treatment,” a man from Afghanistan who worked as a translator for Italian peacekeepers in Afghanistan before the Taliban regained control over the country told The Daily Beast as he crouched beside the tent nearby where he sleeps.

Correct answer!

Quote
The man doesn’t want his name published out of fear it will negatively impact his asylum request, which he launched more than a year ago. He and thousands of other war refugees in Italy are stuck in bureaucratic limbo that can take two or three years before they learn if they can legally stay even when they are from countries that have suffered longer wars than the four-week invasion of Ukraine, whose refugees do not have to go through the same process—even though they are not part of the European Union. Ukrainian refugees are automatically granted a right to stay for 90 days—no questions asked. If they want to extend the stay, they can apply for a 90-day extension.

While no one disagrees that Ukrainians need assistance and support as their country is besieged in this unfair war, there is a growing sense of a double standard when it comes to the color of refugees’ skin and their treatment.

Actually, I disagree. At minimum, Ukrainians should move to the back of the queue. Only when all refugees from chronologically earlier crises have been absorbed should we even consider what to do with Ukrainian refugees. Anything better for Ukrainian refugees is favouritism.

Quote
Andrea Costa, who runs the Baobab center in Rome, told The Daily Beast that while he agrees wholeheartedly that the Ukrainian refugees need help, so do the African and Middle Eastern refugees.

And the latter have needed help for much longer, and have waited for help for much longer, which is why they should not now have to be kept waiting even longer while "white" Ukrainian refugees do not have to wait at all!

Quote
And he sees hypocrisy in calling those helping Ukrainians “saviors” while those who save African refugees are often prosecuted for people smuggling, referring to a number of NGO rescue boat captains currently facing charges in Italy for rescuing migrants and refugees.

Very good point. Anyone still remember Mayor Lucano of Riace? He was a true saviour. This is what happened to him:

https://time.com/6104836/domenico-lucano-riace-mimmo-migrant-mayor/

Quote
How an Italian Mayor Who Turned His Town into a Haven for Migrants Wound Up Facing 13 Years in Jail
...
Lucano’s dream was to bring an abandoned place back to life by welcoming migrants — creating a community in Riace where they could live and possibly work while seeking asylum. And for over a decade, his dream became a reality for countless people arriving in Italy in search of a better life.

Yet on Sept. 30, Lucano’s life became a living nightmare. Judges sentenced him to 13 years and 2 months in jail, far in excess of anything sought by prosecutors.

The judges must think it's OK for Italy to be "white".

Back to the first link:

Quote
The discrepancy between “types” of refugees was made crystal clear in the days after Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine. Thousands of Africans who were working and studying in Ukraine were stopped at the Polish border while white Ukrainians were quickly ushered through, according to Human Rights Watch.
...
At the Santa Sofia Ukrainian Church in Rome, organizers have had to turn people who are delivering supplies including clothing and medicine away due to the outpouring of generosity. “We have told them to give the excess to other refugee groups in the city,” a church official told The Daily Beast. “We are overwhelmed with donations.” Meanwhile the Baobob center regularly publishes its list of needs: canned food, children’s clothing and shoes, diapers, and medicine.
...
Back in Italy at the food line, there is little belief that the Ukrainian situation will make any difference to how war refugees from elsewhere are received.
...
Italy has allotted 13,000 places in refugee centers for Ukrainians. “We were wondering if there was a place to sleep even for Sudanese fleeing a civil war who has already seen the deaths of 300,000 people or for Afghans stranded from Europe on the border between Bosnia and Croatia. We asked ourselves if they deserve peace too. Beyond skin color, that’s it.” The Baobob group posted, noting that Italy set up a National Emergency Fund with €10 million to respond to the “serious crisis: The Ukraine one. Only the Ukrainian one.”

I am sure there exist other individuals like Lucano. I am also sure that if they try to do what Lucano did, they too will be imprisoned for it. This is why the focus has to first be on exterminating racists; only after that can we be practically effective in helping "non-white" refugees on a large scale.
