In an otherwise normal football season, two California high schools abruptly canceled the remainder of their games for the same reason. Players on both teams participated in troublesome acts of racism.

In October 2022, Amador High School in Sutter Creek ended its season after school officials learned that several players joined a Snapchat called “Kill the Blacks.”

In nearby Yuba City, members of the River Valley High School football team produced and filmed a modern day slave auction.

In the film, three teammates – all young Black men – were offered for sale.

Clad in their underwear and with their eyes downcast, the three were paraded through the locker room and put on an auction block. At least one of the Black teens had a belt representing a noose looped around his neck.

Their white and Latinx teammates feverishly bid on them. Even through the lens of the video camera, the “mock” enslavers’ excitement and frenzy were palpable.

A Boston University teaching guide defines the “hidden curriculum” as an amorphous collection of implicit cultural messages of the dominant culture. These unwritten rules reinforce an often unspoken social order in which people of color are subordinate.

The hidden curriculum refers not only to unwritten rules, but also “unspoken expectations” that serve as “unofficial norms, behaviors and values.” These norms become institutionalized. As sociologists Glenn Bracey II and Wendy Leo Moore write, “Although the norms are white, they are rarely marked as such.”

Mock slave auctions are not rare occurrences.

In May 2022, white middle school students at Chatham School District in North Carolina held one by staging the sale of their Black classmates.

One of the parents, Ashley Palmer, posted on Facebook that her son had been “sold” by his classmates.

“His friend ‘went for $350’ and another student was the Slavemaster because he ‘knew how to handle them,’” Palmer wrote. “We even have a video of students harmonizing the N word. Since when were children so blatantly racist?”

In another incident, students at Newberg High School in Oregon participated in a yearlong virtual slave auction called “Slave Trade” that was uncovered by their parents in 2021. On the chat, they targeted Black students and used homophobic and racist slurs while joking about how much they would pay for their Black classmates.

These patterns continued in 2021 when students in Texas created a social media group called “N***** Auction” and pretended to auction off their Black peers.

Not all of the auctions are held on virtual platforms.

In 2016 in Barrington, Illinois, for instance, a “mock slave auction” was staged by Barrington High School students in order to create what they described as “school spirit” during an event meant to bring students from Chicago and the suburbs together.

Group performances not only serve as a bonding experience among members, but they also reinforce an imaginary social hierarchy that harks back to the days of Jim Crow at the turn of the 20th century and legal racial segregation.

These performances convey a message about a sense of belonging. Without using the specific words, the acts suggest to Black students in stark images that their status is marginal at best.

For their part in the mock slave auction, the Black students at River Valley High School issued apologies.

Each received a three-day school suspension – a punishment that proved harsher than that issued to some of their non-Black counterparts, according to Greater Sacramento NAACP President Betty Williams. Though it’s unclear what the punishments were for white students, Williams said they “were not equitable in their distribution.”

I understand Williams’ frustration. In my mind, it could be argued that the onlookers were no more culpable than the hundreds and sometimes thousands of whites who packed picnic baskets and gathered after church to watch a Black person get lynched.

A California man is facing felony charges for allegedly shooting a 21-year-old unarmed Black man who was walking to the grocery store from an Airbnb rental in what officials are describing as an "unprovoked attack."

The victim was crossing the street in the 1200 block of Somerset Drive around 11:08 p.m. on Oct. 2 when he saw the suspect, later identified as 66-year-old Mark Waters, exit a home and "quickly approach him" while holding a handgun, according to San Jose police and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. The victim tried to run away, but as his back was turned, Waters fired his weapon, striking the young man in the leg, prosecutors said.

Why was the victim unarmed? This is what happens when you are unarmed.

Discussing with a racist whether something is racist will get you nowhere. They know perfectly well it is racist, which is why they posted it in the first place. They then pretend they do not understand how it is racist in order to demonstrate that it is OK to be "white". The only correct response to such behaviour is the Samuel Paty treatment.

Afterward, the mother of the student posted about the incident on Facebook.

“I’m just disgusted at how Jenison High School student section started making monkey noises as my son was on the free throw line,” Capriece Polson wrote, along with a video of her son at the free throw line. “Wait but not only the noise but if you look closely you can see one of the students actually acting like a monkey. Just know the superintendent, principal and [athletic director] will be receiving a email with this video. This needs to STOP and these kids need to be held accountable.”

“What have you done to remind the kids and staff that racism will not be tolerated in schools?” Polson asked the board, claiming board members did not act swiftly or severely enough. “What have you done since this incident to educate your students, your staff members?”

Polson’s mother also addressed the board, saying her grandson should have been protected during the game.

“This system is failing,” she said. “I’m very upset; he can’t go out here and play a game that he loves.”

Students accused of bullying a Black basketball player with monkey noises during a school game have been suspended from their Michigan school district—but it was not enough for parents and community members who claim the district is too soft on racism.

Despite the students’ punishment, parents and teachers continued to call out racism that pervades Jenison Public Schools at a board meeting Monday night.

Jenison Public Schools director of communications Peter DeGraaf told The Daily Beast Tuesday that the students responsible for the racist behavior had been given “out-of-school disciplinary action.” He didn’t specify what that entailed or how many students were involved; however, Michigan media outlet MLive reported that the students were suspended.

At Monday’s meeting in Georgetown Township, Superintendent Brandon Graham told the Jenison Board of Education that district officials were trying to find a way to create a more inclusive atmosphere for students, MLive reported. He added that staff members met with members of the NAACP for assistance. According to MLive, Graham wants to increase staff diversity, boost conversations among students about diversity, and make it easier for students to report racial incidents.

“It’s really important that we understand that our approach is not just the response to this isolated incident,” Graham said, according to MLive.

He added that the district needed to determine what the “meaningful steps are for us to develop a sense of belonging… and building cultural competency in our students and adults.”

At Monday’s meeting, the superintendent appeared to have an optimistic outlook after the racist incident, but dozens of community members took the opportunity to voice their frustration.

Joe Spalding, a local political activist, posted community members’ testimonies to the school board on Twitter.

“What have you done to remind the kids and staff that racism will not be tolerated in schools?” Polson asked the board, claiming board members did not act swiftly or severely enough. “What have you done since this incident to educate your students, your staff members?”

“This is clearly a systemic issue in our district. The softhand approach to discipline… has created a safe place—not a safe place for minority students—but a safe place for racism and bigotry,” a parent said at the meeting. “You had the opportunity to send a clear and concise message to your students, administrators, and parents… Unfortunately, I feel you have fallen short.”

An English teacher in the district claimed that racism was so rampant that a lot of students didn’t bother reporting it.

Alumni of Jenison public schools claimed similar racist incidents happened while they were in school and that nothing has changed over the years.

Nothing will change until all the racists' bloodlines have been eliminated.

I was a referee years ago and had this happen. I stopped the game and had the entire student section removed from the gym or suffer forfeit. This is absolutely not supposed to happen and it is required that school administrators be on hand to deal with ANY display of unsportsmanlike conduct from the crowd. A good coach would have called time out and gone to the microphone to announce they’re  forfeiting the game.

The players who did this should be suspended from school, suspended from the team for the rest of the season, and the team's season should end immediately.

Such behavior is inexcusable.

Being benched simply isn’t enough.

Transfer those students to public schools in Detroit.

They won't learn anything without a beating.

That sounds like a less harsh punishment.  Any white kid who acts like that at a game shouldn't be allowed in the building.  Your way is not working.
