Putin 'drastically' WITHDRAWS troops from Kyiv in sign Ukraine is winning
Quote
RUSSIA has said it is to “drastically reduce” forces near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv as its invasion continues to falter.

The announcement was made by the Deputy Defence Minister Alexander Fomin and comes as a fresh round of peace negotiations get under way.

Fomin said Russian forces will also be reduced in Chernihiv region.

Moscow had decided to fund "cut back military activity in the direction of Kyiv and Chernihiv to increase mutual trust and create conditions for further negotiations", he said.

The announcement came as the Ukrainian military leadership had said it had began to notice Russian troop withdrawals from Kyiv and Chernihiv.

Ukrainian army celebrates Irpin victory and plans to 'retake more territories'
Quote
UKRAINE is regaining territory in Irpin, Kyiv and the Kyiv region, a Ukrainian army commander said on Tuesday (March 29).

In an interview with Reuters, Oleksandr Syrskyi said nearly 95% of Irpin was once again under Ukrainian control.

“The territory controlled by us is way bigger then it was at the beginning of the aggression. It’s not only Kyiv and Kyiv region, we are now on the administrative borders of Chernihiv and Zhytomyr Regions,” he added.

However, the Ukrainian military is still in need of assistance when it comes to weapons.

“We are using thousands of missiles daily, and we obviously need help with the resupply of air defence systems, anti-tank systems, artillery resonances means, and much more,” Syrskyi told Reuters.

Russia promised on Tuesday to scale down military operations around Kyiv and northern Ukraine as a confidence-building step, in the most tangible sign yet of progress towards negotiating an end to the war.

Russian soldiers kick up radioactive dust in Chernobyl as 'dirty bomb ingredients go missing'
Quote
Russian soldiers drove through a highly toxic zone without radiation protection when they seized the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in late February.

That’s according to two Ukrainian workers on duty there at the time, who said they saw the Russians’ armoured vehicles kick up clouds of radioactive dust as they drove through the so-called “Red Forest”.

It’s the most radioactively contaminated area around Chernobyl and got its name when miles of pine trees turned red after absorbing radiation from the 1986 explosion.

A nuclear safety expert has warned that a monitoring lab in Chernobyl village has been raided, with thieves looting radioactive ingredients which could be mixed with explosives to create a 'dirty bomb' amid chaos brought about by Russia's invasion.

Anatolii Nosovskyi, director of director of the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants (ISPNPP) in Kyiv, said he has lost contact with the lab so the 'fate of these sources is unknown to us'.

He told Science that if such a bomb were to be made, created with the radioactive isotopes and radioactive waste pieces said to be taken, a wide area risks being contaminated.

In an interview with Reuters on Monday, Balthasar Lindauer, the nuclear safety department head at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, called the Russian troops “reckless”.

"We have seen in the first few days, a spike in radiation that is very likely due to the transport of very heavy military equipment. So that gives you an indication that these troops do not know what they are doing and behaving recklessly."

Lindauer said it was “lucky” they’ve done no further damage so far.

“But if the behaviour of the troops continues as they have shown in the past, of course there is a huge danger for severe accidents that could affect the region and it would be a disaster.”

One of the Chernobyl workers told Reuters, some of the soldiers now stationed there said they had never heard of the 1986 nuclear disaster.

And one called the Russian soldiers’ “Red Forest” drive “suicidal”, as inhaling the radioactive dust would likely cause internal radiation.

Reuters could not independently verify their accounts, and Russia's defense ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

The Russian military said after capturing the plant that radiation was within normal levels and their actions prevented possible "nuclear provocations" by Ukrainian nationalists.

600 Russian ‘spies unmasked’ by Ukraine in embarrassing move for Putin
Quote
Ukraine has claimed to expose the identities of more than 600 alleged Russian spies in a move to embarrass Vladimir Putin, according to reports.

A list of 620 agents believed to be working for Russia’s FSB security agency has been made public, Ukraine claimed.

It has revealed details including the passports, phone numbers and even drinking habits of those alleged agents, The Telegraph reported.

Among the list, one alleged FSB agent fancies himself as a James Bond-like character even using “jamesbond007” in his Skype address.

Meanwhile, one agent was said to like “premium cars” while another, who was branded a heavy drinker, “systematically violates traffic regulations”.

Ukrainian officials made further claims the spies have been involved in “criminal” activity in Europe but they did not offer any details or evidence of this, it was reported.

Details published reportedly included their date and place of birth, passport number, their “registration address” and in some cases car licence plate numbers and financial information.

In a handful of cases, the spy’s home address was reportedly included on the list.

If the list proved to be accurate, it could compromise many of Russia’s FSB agents.

Last week, a hunt for “Western spies” in the FSB was reportedly launched.

Earlier in March, it had been claimed spies were not informed of plans to invade Ukraine.

Some FSB figures were placed under house arrest by Putin, in what is thought to be a response from the Russian president over plans of the invasion being leaked to Western intelligence agents, it was claimed.

It comes as Russian forces have been pushed back from a “number of positions” near Kyiv, British defence chiefs have said.

In its latest intelligence briefing, the Ministry of Defence said: “Ukrainian Forces have continued to conduct localised counter attacks to the north west of Kyiv - including at Irpen, Bucha and Hostomel. These attacks have had some success and the Russians have been pushed back from a number of positions.

Paramilitaries in Ukraine - How Ramzan Kadyrov and Chechen mercenaries shape the war | DW News
Quote
The leader of the Russian province of Chechnya is calling for the storming of Ukraine's capital Kyiv as part of Russia's so-called 'special military operation.' For years, soldiers from Chechnya have been fighting alongside pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Chechen separatists fought two wars against Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. But Russia violently defeated the separatists. Now, Chechnya is part of the Russian Federation and is ruled by Ramzan Kadyrov - a loyal ally of President Vladimir Putin.
Putin has repeatedly called upon Kadyrov's paramilitary fighters to undertake risky missions in Ukraine. But some Chechen separatists have also joined the war - fighting against Russian forces.

Ukraine War - Ukrainian Civilians Driving Straight Through Minefield
Quote
Crazy video footage from Ukraine shows Ukrainian civilians driving straight through an anti-tank minefield in the middle of a road.

Several cars carefully navigated through the mines one after another trying to evade the explosives.

The mines appears to have been M-62M anti-tank blast mines armed with a 7.5 kg explosive charge and an operating pressure of 150+ kg.

Luckily the mines were not magnetic.

There are unconfirmed reports that the mines got placed by retreating Russian forces in the area of Kyiv but we can not say for sure.

How will Germany spend its massive €100 billion military budget? | DW News
Quote
Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a historic increase in military spending. It included a one-time sum of 100 billion Euros to swiftly upgrade the armed forces, and a pledge to spend at least 2 percent of Germany's economic output on defense every year. So what exactly is Germany planning to buy with these billions?

Germany's government has just announced it's activating its early warning plan in anticipation of possible shortages of gas supplies from Russia.
Economy Minister Robert Habeck stressed that there are currently no shortages, but that the government would be establishing a crisis team to monitor the situation more closely. The move follows Russia's demand for gas payments in rubles, which Germany and other western nations have rejected.

The invasion of Ukraine is going much worse than the Russian military expected. In the face of fierce resistance, it experienced heavy losses of both personnel and equipment, including many trucks. And more recently, footage in Ukraine shows the Russian military using “ISIS-style” Toyota and Mitsubishi pickup trucks.

Russian conscripts say they've been 'thrown into the s**t' with '1940s rifles that don't work'
Quote
Mutinous Russian forces are sabotaging their weapons and refusing to carry out orders amid surging Red Army deaths, a UK spy chief will reveal today.

Vladimir Putin “massively misjudged” how hard conquering Ukraine would be but is bent on his “personal war” — even as his poorly fed and armed soldiers are giving up.

It came as telling footage showed despairing conscripts complaining of being “thrown into the s**t” with 1940s rifles that do not work.

Planes have been downed by friendly fire and Russia’s “command and control is in chaos,” GCHQ boss Sir Jeremy Fleming will say.

Met with fierce resistance, Russian troops have been bogged down and pushed back. The strategically important town of Trostyanets in the north-east has been retaken, the occupying soldiers fleeing, leaving their uniforms behind.

But Putin’s fearful generals are hiding the scale of the battlefield losses from him as what was meant to be a lightning war grinds on.

"But we can't let a criminal like Putin get away with it just because he's threatening to use the atomic bomb."

I agree with our enemies:

https://vdare.com/posts/cnn-talking-heads-none-of-them-american-born-you-must-believe-u-s-intel-on-russian-military-failure

Quote
One talking head (Blitzer, I believe) said that U.S. intelligence claims that Vladimir Putin is being misled by his military leaders into thinking Russian forces are doing better than they really are. Blitzer and his guest talking heads explained that Putin has been dictator for 22 years, and people are afraid to tell him what he doesn’t want to hear.

And yet, the very same segment, with Amanpour doing most of the talking on the ground in Ukraine, showed that Russian forces have devastated the country.
...
The segment also showed a huge, bombed-out apartment building, and aerial photos of a new Ukrainian city laid to waste (Irbin), and mention of the destruction the Russians have inflicted on Mariupol. Then there’s Kiev, Kharkiv, Volonavkha, etc. If that’s a failure of the Russian military, what would count as success for it?

So far, Russia has destroyed a lot of infrastructure on Ukrainian territory, whereas Ukraine has destroyed no infrastructure on Russian territory. Similarly, Russia has captured Ukrainian territory, whereas Ukraine has captured no Russian territory. By either of these serious measures, Ukraine is losing and Russia is winning. Absent a Ukrainian counter-invasion into Russian territory, this will continue to be the case. The only way Russia can be said to have lost this war is if it ends the war with less territory than it started it with. So far, I see no sign that anyone even seems interested in making this happen.

Ukraine doesn't want to "give up on Donbas and Crimea" - Zelenskyy presidential adviser | DW News
Quote
The Red Cross says its convoy of buses and aid has not yet made it to Mariupol to help evacuate civilians from the city that's been besieged by Russian forces for weeks. Earlier, the city council suggested that the first evacuations had taken place in buses belonging to the International Committee of the Red Cross. Reporting from Ukraine, DW's Correspondent Rebecca Ritters explained: "The ICRC team said they were on their way to facilitate the safe passage of civilians to Zaporizhzhia, a Ukrainian-held town just north of Mariupol. But they had to turn around because arrangements and conditions made it impossible to proceed." "We had heard that 2,000 people were going to be evacuated today. Unfortunately, that's not true," Ritters added. But she said that more than 1,400 people had left the city by private vehicle on Thursday. The Red Cross convoy also includes desperately-needed humanitarian supplies, which have still not made it the city. Mariupol residents have been without power and communications for several weeks and food supplies have run low.

Kyiv has denied responsibility for a blaze at a fuel depot in the Russian city of Belgorod, which Moscow said was caused by a Ukrainian air strike. Russia's Defence Ministry said that two Ukrainian helicopters struck the facility, which lies some 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the joint border, and is one of Russia's main logistics hubs for the war. Moscow said the choppers entered Russian territory at an extremely low altitude at around 5 a.m. Moscow time (0200 UTC) on Friday, but Ukraine's top security official rebuffed the accusation. "For some reason, they say that we did it, but according to our information, this does not correspond to reality," Security Council Secretary Oleksiy Danilov said on Ukrainian national television. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin had been briefed about the incident and that the strike could harm peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv.

Ukraine doesn't want to "give up on Donbas and Crimea," during peace talks with Russia, Liubov Tsybulska, an expert in hybrid warfare and an adviser to the Ukrainian government told DW. Tsybulska said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's position was to "talk about this in a few years and solve it in a diplomatic way." She rejected the idea that taking control of the Donbas region has been the goal of Russian President Vladimir Putin all along. "They [the Russians] don't need Donbas at all," she said. "They were controlling Donbas — Donetsk and Luhansk — for eight years. It's not their intention to get these territories." Russia says Kyiv has agreed to cede sovereignty of Donbas and Crimea as well as not seek NATO membership, but Ukraine's government has denied those claims.
Tsybulska said that Russian President Vladimir Putin's real strategy is "about controlling Ukrainians." She said Russia's claim that it was easing military activity around Kyiv was a ploy so they can regroup their forces, especially considering that "Russia is suffering very heavy losses, human losses, equipment and so on."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i59BbOpfvBQ

A united Ukraine that has driven Russia completely from it's territory would probably become a powerhouse in the region similar to the U.K. or Germany, I agree with other recent commenters in that regard. A powerhouse that could also potentially seize Russian territory within Russia proper....
