Putin gives bizarre 'special message' to wives and daughters on International Women's Day
Quote
RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin today delivered a bizarre 'special message' to 'Wives, girlfriends, sisters and daughters', on International Women's Day.

He said: “I want to address mothers, wives, sisters, brides and girlfriends of our soldiers and officers who defend Russia during the special military operation” Putin said in the address.

"I emphasize that conscript soldiers are not participating in hostilities and will not participate in them. And there will be no additional call-up of reservists."

The Russian president also said he was sending special respect to the women of his country, adding "I understand how you’re worrying for your beloved ones. You may be as proud of them as the whole country is".

NATO Allies Send Ukraine 17,000 Anti-tank Missiles and NLAW in Six Days.
Quote
NATO Allies Send Ukraine 17,000 Anti-tank Missiles in Six Days.

Ukrainian leaders say the shipments – sent by U.S. and other NATO allies – have made a difference against Russia's armored vehicles, The New York Times reports

In just six days, the United States and other NATO allies have supplied Ukraine with more than 17,000 anti-tank weapons, the New York Times reported Sunday.

The shipments include the medium-range, U.S.-made Javelin; the Anglo-Swedish short-range NLAW; rocket-propelled grenades; and other anti-tank systems, according to the report.

Similar ammunition was supplied to Ukraine before the war broke out, along with Bayraktar drones supplied by Turkey before and during the conflict.

According to the New York Times, 70 percent of the $350 million military aid, approved by U.S. President Joe Biden on February 26, was delivered within five days in an attempt to get the weapons into Ukraine before Russian forces started attacking aid convoys.

These arms shipments were largely shipped from Germany initially, and then were sent through Poland, Romania and a few other neighboring countries before continuing over the Ukraine border to Kyiv and other major cities.

Ukrainian leaders informed U.S. officials that the weapons shipments were "making a difference on the battlefield," according to the Times.

Putin's war: No mercy for civilians? | To the point
Quote
It began as a military operation. Now, though, it’s a massive onslaught on the well-being, indeed the lives, of countless innocent civilians.

Residential areas have been razed to the ground. Many people killed in their own homes. Families, divided. Hundreds of thousands of mostly women and children forced to leave the country. How many will never return? It’s impossible to say. And the worst could still be yet to come.

So, on another special edition of To The Point, we ask: Putin's war: No mercy for civilians?

Ukraine's Zelensky says he has 'cooled' on joining NATO and is open to discussions about control of Russian-backed separatist regions
Quote
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he had "cooled down" about Ukraine's bid to join NATO amid Russia's war with the Eastern European country.

"Regarding NATO, I have cooled down regarding this question long ago after we understood that NATO is not prepared to accept Ukraine," Zelensky told ABC News in an exclusive interview published on Tuesday.

Zelensky added: "The alliance is afraid of controversial things and confrontation with Russia. I never wanted to be a country which is begging something on its knees. We are not going to be that country, and I don't want to be that president."

Russian health ministry documents show how Russia is preparing for casualties
Quote
I have been given a copy of document issued today by the Russian Ministry of Health which shows it is anticipating a major medical event in which doctors have to be drafted from across the country.

It indicates Russia is anticipating a massive medical emergency and has ordered health organisations to immediately identify medical staff ready to relocate and work. The document from the Russian Ministry of Health is signed by the deputy health minister and dated today - February 25.

It asks medical organisations to be ready "to be promptly involved in activities aimed at saving lives and preserving the health of people in Russia". Russian medical institutions have been ordered by the Health Ministry to send a list no later than 6pm to the deputy health minister of "medical specialists and medical workers… indicating their full name, place of work, positions & contact details". The document makes it clear these medics will be deployed somewhere and will be offered a "reimbursement of travel and accommodation expenses, as well as payment of labour is expected from funds from the Federal Centre of Medical Disasters".

Why is the Russian offensive not going at full speed? | Ukraine war latest
Quote
The Ukrainian military says that Russia is seeing major setbacks and its advance has slowed significantly.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the House of Commons by video link Tuesday evening, and received a standing ovation after paraphrasing one of Winston Churchill's famous wartime speeches in vowing his continued resistance of Russia's invasion.

"We will not give up and we will not lose. We will fight to the end, at sea, in the air. We will continue fighting for our land, whatever the cost, in the forests, in the fields, on the shores, in the streets," Zelenskyy said.

The Ukrainian president added his country was fighting for its survival, and called on UK lawmakers to continue applying pressure on the Kremlin with sanctions.

Zelenskyy's address to a packed house in the Westminster chamber came shortly after the UK announced it would be phasing out imports of Russian oil in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden said that the US will also no longer import Russian oil.

"We will not be part of subsidizing Putin's war," Biden said. Energy imports provide a vital source of income for the Kremlin.

True. The only other thing I was thinking was that it's a last ditch attempt to get NATO to implement a "no-fly zone". It is a shame NATO could not have gotten involved because that Russian convoy was literally stuck in place for about three days and was extremely susceptible to aerial bombardment. I believe this is what the big push for a "no-fly zone" has been all about.

Yep, Israel is taking credit already:

Quote
Israeli officials with direct information about the talks coordinated by Israel said they feel there is a softening of positions on both sides in the last 24 hours, with the Russians saying they only want to demilitarize the Donbas region and Zelensky telling ABC news he has “cooled down” about joining NATO.

Israeli officials said they hope these are signs that more progress toward a diplomatic solution might be possible.
...
Israeli officials are crediting their talks with Putin for crystallizing the situation for Zelensky and also contributing to western knowledge about the Russian president’s positions.
...
A senior Israeli official said Zelensky is at a crossroads and has to choose between two options:

Accept the Russian proposal, which is very tough, but preserve Ukraine’s sovereignty and stop the war.

Reject the proposal and risk a serious escalation in the Russian attack that could end in a catastrophe for Zelensky and for Ukraine.

Now would be the best timing for NATO to agree to implement the no-fly zone, thereby boosting Zelensky's confidence to reject the proposal.

40-mile Russian convoy headed to Kyiv has 'virtually stalled for over a week'
Quote
The 40-mile (64 km) long Russian military column convoy heading toward Kyiv has "virtually stalled for over a week and sits about 15 miles out from the city", said The Washington Post.

"Mechanical breakdown, congestion and morale issues, plus food and fuel supplies running low", are cited by the BBC as contributing factors to the extremely slow progress.

“Additionally, one former commander of the U.K. Joint Forces Command, told the BBC command and control issues such as faulty radio networks are likely to be causing bigger problems.”

“The Associated Press, meanwhile, reports that Ukrainian resistance may also account for some of the slowdown, with one senior U.S. defense official saying Ukrainian troops have been targeting the convoy with ground fire, including shoulder-fired Javelin anti-tank missiles, and essentially creating roadblocks when vehicles at the front of the convoy are struck.”

“Alternatively, though, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby has suggested that the vehicles, which he says are largely meant for ‘resupply’ purposes, could be deliberately paused as the Russians regroup themselves.”

“Cited by The Washington Post last week, the director of the Security and Defense Studies Program at Turkish think tank EDAM[a], added detail to that suggestion, explaining the convoy’s delay could be partially the result of Russia’s attempt to move away from a failed plan to ‘decapitate’ the Ukrainian government quickly.”

“The Russian forces are instead now trying to transition to ‘Soviet-type heavy fire power and armor-focused operations,’ he said.”

“Going further, the former head of the British Army, General Lord Dannatt, told the BBC ‘This enormous column ... will encircle and lay siege to the capital,’ Kyiv, where the New Yorker reported last week that thousands of those residents still in the city are seeking shelter every night in its metro system.”

Turkey has delivered a new batch of Bayraktar TB2 attack drones to Ukraine.
Quote
Turkey has delivered a new batch of Bayraktar TB2 attack drones to Ukraine.

A few hours ago, a Ukrainian An-124 military transport aircraft took off from the Turkish city of Tekirdag towards the Polish Rzeszow, located on the border of Poland and Ukraine, which, according to a number of sources, is transporting another batch of Bayraktar TB2 strike unmanned aerial vehicles.
“The An-124-100 heavy transport aircraft of the Ukrainian Antonov airline took off from the Turkish city of Tekirdag, where the production of UAVs is located, to Polish Rzeszow. On board, presumably, a new batch of Bayraktar TB2 attack drones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This is the second such flight in the last few days.”, - informs "Telegram" channel "Military observer."

A few days ago, a plane with Bayraktars actually flew from Turkey to Rzeszow, but Ankara said that this was a personal matter of Kyiv and the Turkish company, in which the Turkish authorities did not intend to interfere.

It is known that the Armed Forces of Ukraine really actively used Bayraktar TB2 attack drones, however, the latter were massively shot down, including by the Russian military, as previously reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Poland Pushes Ukraine Fighter Jet Issue Over to NATO to Decide
Quote
Poland offered to send its MiG-29 fighter jets to an American base in Germany for NATO to decide what to do with them, as it grapples with public pressure from Ukraine to send in planes to help combat Russia’s air superiority.

The government in Kyiv has repeatedly called for more fighter jets for its pilots, putting Poland in a tricky spot as it seeks to avoid being pulled into a potentially broader conflict with Russia.

The government in Warsaw has now opted to push the issue over to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization more broadly to handle. So far the military alliance has been highly cautious about adding fighters to the weaponry that’s being sent in to support Ukraine’s military. Russia has already warned that doing so would be seen as an act of direct aggression by NATO members.

“It is about providing some transparency,” Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski said Wednesday on local radio. “It is not that Poland wants to make any decisions on its own that may affect NATO security. Likewise, other NATO members should not independently make decisions that may disproportionately affect Poland’s security.”

Poland has also said it would only be willing to send its fighters to the Ramstein air base in Germany if it were to receive replacements from the U.S., and that is a process that requires multiple steps in Washington for compliance and can in theory take years.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday ruled out any suggestion of sending MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine via Germany.

“We have to very carefully consider what we send to Ukraine and quite certainly fighter jets are not part of that,” Scholz told reporters in Berlin during a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

NATO nations -- including Poland, Germany and the U.S. -- have repeatedly committed themselves to the bloc’s vow to consider an attack on one ally as an attack on all. But Ukraine isn’t part of NATO, which is why nations haven’t been willing to commit forces following Russia’s invasion.

Russia is changing tactics' UK sends anti-air missiles to Ukraine to adapt to new threat.
Quote
DEFENCE Secretary Ben Wallace announced to the House of Commons that the UK is considering sending anti-air missiles to Ukraine and additional non-lethal aid to combat Russia's change in tactics.

Ben Wallace revealed the Russians are "changing their tactics" as the conflict "intensifies" and says the UK must do more to aid Ukraine in its fight. Mr Wallace announced to help Ukraine combat the Russian airforce, in light of a no-fly zone rejection, the UK would explore donating anti-air missiles to Ukraine to better their defences. Additionally, the UK would be increasing rations, medical equipment, and other non-lethal supplies to the warzone including an increase in humanitarian aid spending in what he says makes the UK the "single biggest bilateral humanitarian donor".

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Wallace announced new support measures the UK would be given to Ukraine.

He said: “As the conflict intensifies, Mr Speaker, the Russians are changing their tactics.

“And so the Ukrainians need to, we can all see that horrific devastation inflicted on civilian areas by Russian artillery and airstrikes, indiscriminate and murderous.

“It is vital therefore that Ukraine maintains its ability to fly and suppress Russian air attacks.

“To date, the international community has donated over 900 Man-Portable Air Defence missiles and thousands of anti-tank guided weapons of varying types, as well as various small arms.

“But the capability needs strengthening, so in response to Ukrainian requests, the Government has taken the decision to explore the donation of Starstreak high-velocity man-portable anti-air missiles.

“We believe that this system will remain within the definition of defensive weapons and will allow the Ukrainian forces to better defend their skies.”

Mr Wallace added the UK would be boosting their humanitarian support to Ukraine and would be offering more funds.
