The Terrible Truth of Shapiro’s True Allegiance

Championing conservative causes may be Ben Shapiro’s calling, but writing fiction isn’t. True Allegiance is Shapiro’s ham-fisted attempt at an action-packed political thriller. It may have heroes and villains duking it out for the sanctity of the country, but it meanders through five interconnected stories plagued by two-dimensional characters, bizarre conspiracy theories of current political groups, and tons of misguided or ambiguous allegories meant to represent his distorted worldviews.

A Little Background on Shapiro
If you have conservative friends on social media—or you, yourself, lean to the right—you probably know a lot about Shapiro. This thirty-something pundit has become the wunderkind among those who lean to the right. As a result, it’s not surprising to see his articles re-posted on Facebook or Twitter on a daily basis.

The other plots (including the main one) pan out in the following manner:

    A young general serving in Afghanistan must escape from the clutches of terrorists in Iran and make it back to the United States to stop another terrorist attack.
    A California rancher deemed a domestic terrorist by the government joins an anti-government paramilitary biker gang (whose members insist, repeatedly, they’re not white supremacists!) and decides to set
    out on a journey to save a police officer in Detroit she believes was wrongfully accused of shooting a young black youth.
    A Texas governor and his assistant (the wife of the young general) go to war with drug cartels along the Mexican border.
    An African-American drug kingpin devises a complex (and convoluted) scheme to take over Detroit…and possibly other cities.

The one thread to tie all these plots together is the main antagonist of the story, a corrupt president with a “socialist” agenda that puts the security of the country at stake so he can get a work program through congress and have his “moment” in the media to enshrine his legacy. All this within a book containing a little over 230 pages!

Who’s the Hero?

The plot about the young general is the main one. It’s obvious because Shapiro supplies a lengthy back story to General Brett Hawthorne. In addition, he gloriously describes Hawthorne as being the epitome of masculinity by writing “a bear of a man, six three in his bare feet and two hundred fifteen pounds in his underwear, with a graying blond crew cut and a face carved of granite.”

The description hasn’t escaped scrutiny by critics. A few of them mentioned that it suspiciously sounds homoerotic. This is ironic, considering Shapiro has a long history of making homophobic comments.

Supposedly, Hawthorne is a bright individual who can quickly pick up languages, especially Arabic and Pashto (that “he somehow” learned,as Shapiro states). Also, his Farsi is limited. A bizarre statement considering that Afghanistan’s two official languages, Pashto and Dari, are closely related to Farsi.

In fact, Dari (the most widely spoken language int the country) is also called “Afghan Persian” and is often used in Kabul for business or government transactions. Pashto belongs to the same Indo-Iranian language family and shares some of the same Farsi words. Also, it's not uncommon for the two languages to be blended. Many in the country are bilingual or multilingual, considering that there are other Farsi dialects and minor languages spoken in the country.

Considering that Hawthorne is gifted in language, and has served in Afghanistan, he'd be able to be fluent in Dari, as well as Pashto.

Levon’s Twisted Plan

Not all allegories paint a pretty picture. The story involving Levon Williams takes a negative and incredulous turn. Levon is describe as a well-educated drug kingpin with a bold and devious plan to take over Detroit. He stages a shooting involving a white cop and a black youth meant to galvanize the African-American community to protest. In the process he manipulates the outrage (even staging the assassination of a civil rights leader for further effect), becomes the de facto leader of a grassroots organization with the grieving mother (who doesn’t know Levon’s intent), and uses secret channels with politicians to eventually form a committee to reform the police department.

There is no doubt that the organization formed in the story is an allegory for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, at least in the way that Shapiro see them. In Shapiro’s interpretation of the group, they’re revolutionaries easily manipulated to seek vigilante justice against officer while unwittingly helping a con artist rise to political power.

So Who Would Read This?

There’s one thing that works in Shapiro’s favor. He has a fan base that’s willing to put up with the fault found in this book. The book has glowing reviews on Amazon and the latest cover sports the New York Times Bestseller emblem. Thus, it’s almost unlikely, his fans will find fault in the story…well, not everybody. One Shapiro fan wrote that she usually likes his philosophy, but she didn’t like the story. Too bad there’s not enough fans like her to be this honest.

The epilogue summarizes how the Organization went on to conquer the rest of the world and how all non-white races were eliminated. Africa was invaded; all of its black inhabitants were killed. Puerto Ricans (described as a "repulsive mongrel race") were killed and Puerto Rico was recolonized. After China attempts to invade European Russia, the Organization attacks its with nuclear, chemical, radiological and biological weapons which render the entire continent of Asia uninhabitable and rife with "mutants". In the United States, the last remaining non-whites are hunted down, along with all of the individuals who are involved in organized crime (such as the Mafia).

One of the last steps in the Organization's victory is its truce with the remainder of the American military's generals, who agree to surrender if the former swears not to harm them or their immediate families. The Organization gladly accepts. The epilogue concludes with the statement that "just 110 years after the birth of the 'Great One', the dream of a white world finally became a certainty... and the Order would spread its wise and benevolent rule over the earth for all time to come."[4]

I used to be a liberal, then a conventional (National Review–Rush Limbaugh) conservative. I grew up like most Americans observing blacks and noticing their behavior, but I attributed it completely to the environment. About four years ago, I read Michael Levin’s book Why Race Matters and became converted to the American Renaissance position. How did I happen to read this book?

I had been a fan of Prof. Levin since I first came across his article, “Why Homosexuality Is Abnormal” in The Monist — I believe this was in the late 1980s. As I had always thought homosexuality weird and disgusting, it was nice to find that a very sharp philosopher had actually presented arguments against it. And he did it with such humor and elegance as well. Then, in the early 1990s I found out he had written Feminism and Freedom, which I purchased and devoured. Then in the late 1990s, I found out he had written a book on race and I, of course, had to read it so I purchased it.

Professor Levin’s book is remarkable. I am an amateur philosopher with an M.A. in the field. Prof. Levin literally teaches you how to think better and to apply philosophical concepts to practical issues like race. As I read through chapter after chapter, I continually had the “aha” feeling of finally understanding something that was all too familiar but that my previous conceptual scheme had forced me to misunderstand. Prof. Levin enabled me to see that there was a biological explanation for what I saw.

"The Guardian" newspaper in the UK for example, said the other day that whatever happens to the pandemic, and the COVID, and all the rest of us, they would like us to go into lockdown once every two years. It would supposedly be good for climate change. You do not see this in America, but you quite a lot on overseas news reports. BBC, in the early days of the pandemic was doing all these encouraging reports on how Ireland where it is illegal for you to go more than three miles from your home.

On how Ireland had, fantastically -- and this is really terrific news – they have managed to lower their carbon footprint simply by confining people to their homes and a three‑mile radius. The idea that this is the new normal is deeply disturbing.

What I find disturbing is the carbon footprint itself from the Industrial Revolution onwards. The Industrial Revolution is what we do not want accepted as normal.

Question: What are your thoughts on China and what the US and the West should be doing about it?

Steyn: I think we ought to have some serious decoupling. Under cover of COVID this year, China tore up an international treaty over Hong Kong. Hong Kong essentially existed as a hybrid Anglo-Chinese entity since 1997. They have some Chinese judges, but they also have seven judges from the British Commonwealth. There are English, Canadian, Australian judges sitting on the Hong Kong High Court. Beijing did not like that. Beijing basically tore up that treaty and said, "From now on, you are just Chinese like everybody else."

What's the problem?

Right now, we are witnessing a non‑stop continuous transfer of power to a country that is serious about using that power. This is China's moment. Take it as someone who grew up, in large part, in a great power in decline. There's no real explicit handover day. People, in hindsight, expect to pinpoint the day that the baton was passed.

No one in Britain was aware of it at that time. The term the British Empire was used seriously basically until Suez, the Anglo‑French‑Israeli operation against Nasser's Egypt that Washington decided to scuttle. At that point, after that, it was hard to use the phrase the British Empire with a straight face, because it was obvious it was no longer any such thing.

You only see, in hindsight, the moment it occurred. My great worry is that actually, the transfer to China has already happened. The baton has already been passed. We just haven't formally acknowledged that yet.

But is this worse than not passing the baton? Especially considering what the previous carriers have done to the world while carrying it?

I try to restrain myself from seeing obvious metaphorical geopolitical symbolism in trivial events, but that story the other day about how China was making US diplomats undergo COVID anal swabs had too much symbolic power for what China has basically done to the entire planet to let it go.

They understand that; that is the reason they did it too.

At some point, if we're not prepared to stand up... My whole thing, in all the years, is that Western civilization is sliding off a cliff and most citizens of most Western nations are not even aware of it.

They think the big story is whether Britney Spears will recover rights to her wealth from whoever is running it all at the moment. If you said to them, "No, the fact that Western civilization is heading off the cliff, is the one you ought to be focusing on".... We are running out of time to actually focus on that.

I am totally focusing on it. I'm the one at the bottom of the cliff handing out free sledgehammers to anyone worried that the fall alone fails to kill it.

We are the civilization that built the modern world. If you do not like us, we can go back to what it was 500 years ago. Basically, the world functions because of the world we built.

I look forward to going back - after getting rid of you first so you do not build it again.

We are going to have to have someone who is prepared to say, "Enough with the self‑loathing. Enough with the moral preening. We're going to put the Cat in the Hat bow tie around every Confederate General across the land and stop being ashamed of who we are."

And on our side we need someone who is prepared to say, "All those who agree with Steyn must be prohibited from reproducing."

Professor accused of hurling racial slurs, spitting on Black woman and her daughter outside Oak Park grocery store

Prosecutors on Sunday accused a longtime academic in sports exercise and rehabilitation of hurling racial slurs and spitting at a Black woman parked outside an Oak Park Jewel store in front of the woman’s young child earlier this month.

Authorities also said Alberto Friedmann, 53, allegedly sped past the victim in his Jaguar, narrowly missing her, but intentionally striking her vehicle with his.

The woman and her 7-year-old daughter were in a parked car waiting for her mother to finish shopping when she heard honking and yelling behind her, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Lindsay Ruedig.

After exiting his car, Friedmann is accused of yelling slurs at the victim and her daughter, Ruedig told the court. When the victim attempted to open her own door, Friedmann allegedly slammed her door shut and spit in her face, telling her he spit “because he does not like Black people,” Ruedig said.

The victim’s mother exited the store in time to hear the slurs and see the offender spit at her daughter, authorities said. The victim exited her vehicle to get his license plate number but didn’t see one and called out for someone to call police.

Friedmann then allegedly accelerated toward the victim, who moved out of the way and wasn’t struck, Ruedig said. Friedmann’s vehicle struck the woman’s car twice. Eyewitnesses intervened when Friedmann exited his car a second time, and he was later arrested.

Two years ago, while working as an assistant professor of exercise science at Indiana State University, Friedmann was named a fellow with the Royal Society of Medicine in London.

Alberto Friedmann sometimes lights candles on Shabbat. He once competed in the Maccabi games. He was confirmed and became a bar mitzvah as a youngster. Today, he still celebrates many of the holidays and even taught his stepchildren the dreidel game.

His Judaism is important to him.
