As usual, those who suffer the consequences are not those who created the problem:

"A mountain of discarded clothing, including Christmas sweaters and ski boots, cuts a strange sight in Chile’s Atacama, the driest desert in the world, which is increasingly suffering from pollution created by fast fashion.
[...]
Chile has long been a hub of second-hand and unsold clothing, made in China or Bangladesh and passing through Europe, Asia or the United States before arriving in Chile, where it is resold around Latin America.

Some 59,000 tonnes of clothing arrive each year at the Iquique port in the Alto Hospicio free zone in northern Chile.

Clothing merchants from the capital Santiago, 1,800km (1,100 miles) to the south, buy some, while much is smuggled out to other Latin American countries. But at least 39,000 tonnes that cannot be sold end up in rubbish dumps in the desert.
[...]
According to a 2019 UN report, global clothing production doubled between 2000 and 2014, and the industry is “responsible for 20 percent of total water waste on a global level”.

To make a single pair of jeans requires 7,500 litres (2,000 gallons) of water.

The same report said clothing and footwear manufacturing contributes 8 percent of global greenhouse gases, and that “every second, an amount of textiles equivalent to a garbage truck is buried or burned”.

Whether the clothing piles are left out in the open or buried underground, they pollute the environment, releasing pollutants into the air or underground water channels.

Clothing, either synthetic or treated with chemicals, can take 200 years to biodegrade and is as toxic as discarded tyres or plastic materials.

Chile, the richest country in South America, is known for the voracious consumerism of its inhabitants."

Democracy is bad for our health:
Quote
It wasn't just Trump: Four years later, politics still make people sick

2020 surveys show huge numbers of Americans perceive that politics exact a chronic negative toll on their health

Scrolling social media, reading websites, listening to podcasts, watching news. With so many options, it’s never been easier to follow American politics, but at what cost?

According to research from University of Nebraska–Lincoln political scientist Kevin Smith, all the political jockeying is harmful to our health, has been for some time, and even a change in party power didn’t help.

In a follow-up to the groundbreaking 2017 survey study where he first measured the effects of the political climate on Americans’ physical, social, mental and emotional health, Smith has published a new article in PLOS ONE. Smith repeated the same 32-question survey twice in 2020 — two weeks prior to the election, and two weeks after. The 2020 findings mirrored the 2017 results, and again found that a large proportion of American adults blame politics for causing them stress, loss of sleep, fractured relationships and more.

Similar to the 2017 findings, the 2020 surveys found that an estimated 40% of Americans identified politics as a significant source of stress. Additionally, between a fifth and a third of adults (50 to 85 million people) blamed politics for causing fatigue, feelings of anger, loss of temper and triggering compulsive behaviors. About a quarter of adults reported they’d given serious consideration to moving because of politics.

That the results remained mostly stable after nearly four years is cause for alarm, Smith said.
[...]
Besides pointing to a possible health crisis, Smith warned the findings could be a bad recipe for democracy.

“There’s potential for a demobilization effect here,” Smith said. “If people view politics as so conflictual, and potentially a threat to their own well-being, they’ll say ‘heck with it, I don’t want to get involved.’ And democracies depend on participation. We need civically-engaged citizens.”
https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/940003

(It's not "politics". One party states with no elections don't have this kind of stress which is unique to democracy...)

Quote
So, how can these effects be mitigated? Smith said that’s a question he plans to explore further in future research, though his team has identified one possible tool: becoming more politically knowledgeable.

“People who were more politically knowledgeable were less likely to report these negative outcomes,” Smith said. “Something I’d really like to look at would be if you took somebody who’s politically interested, but not particularly politically knowledgeable, and they were given information about the political system, would that reduce these negative costs of politics? That could be a positive outcome of civic education that’s never been considered before.”

Excuse me? Wtf? Politically knowledgeable people are burnt-out, miserable husks. Politically knowledgeable people watched a coup unfold in real time and have spent over a year watching literally nothing be done about it, while the coup organizers organize future coups in public... For every single person I've seen, the longer they've followed politics and the more knowledgeable they are about it, the more miserable they are.

In fact, one can find a plethora of news article blog things suggesting turning off the news and ignoring everything to be the cure for democratically-induced stress.

I feel like Western politics in general have had a major negative impact on my health. I feel the rest of us who aren't barbarians deserve some kind of compensation for the negative impacts on our health that barbarians in the political arena have forced upon us without our consent.

INDEED!!! Politics by Westerners is now almost as miserable as being cold, wet, tired, and hungry, for myself atleast. I need serious shelter away from most of these people....

And what will be done to address this? Nothing, as long as democracy remains in place.

Chemical pollution has passed safe limit for humanity, say scientists
[...]
The study concludes that chemical pollution has crossed a “planetary boundary”, the point at which human-made changes to the Earth push it outside the stable environment of the last 10,000 years.

Chemical pollution threatens Earth’s systems by damaging the biological and physical processes that underpin all life. For example, pesticides wipe out many non-target insects, which are fundamental to all ecosystems and, therefore, to the provision of clean air, water and food.

There has been a fiftyfold increase in the production of chemicals since 1950 and this is projected to triple again by 2050,” said Patricia Villarrubia-Gómez, a PhD candidate and research assistant at the Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) who was part of the study team. “The pace that societies are producing and releasing new chemicals into the environment is not consistent with staying within a safe operating space for humanity.”
[...]
“There’s evidence that things are pointing in the wrong direction every step of the way,” said Prof Bethanie Carney Almroth at the University of Gothenburg who was part of the team. “For example, the total mass of plastics now exceeds the total mass of all living mammals. That to me is a pretty clear indication that we’ve crossed a boundary. We’re in trouble, but there are things we can do to reverse some of this.”

Villarrubia-Gómez said: “Shifting to a circular economy is really important. That means changing materials and products so they can be reused, not wasted.”
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jan/18/chemical-pollution-has-passed-safe-limit-for-humanity-say-scientists

Scientists, journalists, and politicians who claim to care about environmentalism but aren't CONSTANTLY DECLARING WE MUST GET RID OF DEMOCRACY every single breath they take need to be called connivers.

Revised headline:
Scientists are allowing chemical pollution to pass the safe limit for humanity since they care more about preserving democracy than doing anything about pollution.

Which humans? Only those belonging to one particular civilization, as our enemies proudly tell us:

Periodic reminder that problems created by Western civilization cannot be solved with more Western civilization:

They can only be solved by killing Western civilization completely.

There have always been volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis, but in the old days these did not lead to oil spills because there was no oil industry. (Similarly they did not lead to nuclear disasters because there was no nuclear industry.) Every other historical civilization was successfully avoiding these problems, and then Western civilization came along and ruined it for everyone.

Holding in the deep: what Canada wants to do with its decades-old pileup of nuclear waste
Quote
Canada plans to store spent nuclear fuel deep, deep underground in the Great Lakes basin. That is, if an industry group can find a community willing to play host
Quote
The final resting place of Canada’s most radioactive nuclear waste could be a cave about as deep below the surface as the CN Tower is tall.

If it happens, the chamber and its network of tunnels will be drilled into bedrock in the Great Lakes basin. Pellets of spent nuclear fuel — baked into a ceramic form, loaded into bundles of metal tubes the size of fireplace logs, then placed into a metal container encased in clay made from volcanic ash — will be stacked in the underground chamber sealed with concrete 10 to 12 metres thick. Though the radioactive pellets will have spent several years cooling down in pools and concrete canisters, they will still emit so much energy that their presence will heat up the space where they sit for 30 to 60 years. The warmth will linger for anywhere from a few centuries to a few millennia.

Disposing of spent fuel clearly does not consume any energy or time....

Sounds really efficient to me.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/images-show-100-000-dead-175552385.html

Quote
France and the European Commission have launched inquiries into how a Dutch-owned supertrawler deposited more than 100,000 dead fish in the Atlantic Ocean off the French coast on Thursday.
...
Images of the spill show a carpet of dead blue whiting, a sub-species of cod used to mass-produce fish fingers, covering a surface area of over 32,000 square feet, said conservation group Sea Shepherd France, per The Washington Post.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottom_trawling

Quote
Trawling gear produces acute impacts on biota and the physical substratum of the seafloor by disrupting the sediment column structure, overturning boulders, re-suspending sediments and imprinting deep scars on muddy bottoms.[11] Also, the repetitive passage of trawling gear over the same areas creates long-lasting, cumulative impacts that modify the cohesiveness and texture of sediments. It can be asserted nowadays that due to its recurrence, mobility and wide geographical extent, industrial trawling has become a major force driving seafloor change and affecting not only its physical integrity on short spatial scales but also imprinting measurable modifications to the geomorphology of entire continental margins.[12]
...
Bottom trawling can both resuspend and bury biologically recyclable organic material, changing the flow of nutrients and carbon through the food web and thereby alter geomorphological landscapes.[12] Ocean sediments are the sink for many persistent organic pollutants, usually lipophilic pollutants like DDT, PCB and PAH.[citation needed] Bottom trawling mixes these pollutants into the plankton ecology where they can move back up the food chain and into our food supply.[19]

Phosphorus is often found in high concentration in soft shallow sediments.[20] Resuspending nutrient solids like these can introduce oxygen demand into the water column, and result in oxygen deficient dead zones.[21] Even in areas where the bottom sediments are ancient, bottom trawling, by reintroducing the sediment into the water column, can create harmful algae blooms.[22][23] More suspended solids are introduced into the oceans from bottom trawling than any other man-made source.[24]
...
The Secretary General of the United Nations reported in 2006 that 95 percent of damage to seamount ecosystems worldwide is caused by deep sea bottom trawling.[28][29]

So, which civilization introduced trawling? The same one as usual, of course:

Quote
The development of this type of craft, the sailing trawler, is credited to the fishermen of Brixham in Devon. The new method proved to be far more efficient than traditional long-lining. At first its use was confined to the western half of the English Channel, but as the Brixham men extended their range to the North Sea and Irish Sea it became the norm there too.

By the end of the 19th century there were more than 3,000 sailing trawlers in commission in UK waters and the practice had spread to neighbouring European countries.

By the way, credit to Hugo Chavez:

Quote
Venezuela was the first country to ban industrial trawling in its territorial waters and EEZ in 2009.[39][40]

Oil demand may run up to 103M barrels a day in 2022, says Hotchkis & Wiley's Stan Majcher
