According to a 2022 Pew Research Center survey, 81% of Latino immigrants believe restricting gun ownership is more important than protecting gun rights. But for Latinos born in the US, the figure drops to 65%.
Perez is also unsure how law enforcement perceives him as a Latino man wielding a firearm. On average, 200 Hispanic people in the US are killed by police each year, with Hispanic Americans more likely than white people to be fatally shot by police.

The Socialist Rifle Association’s answer to gun violence in the US is to arm “vulnerable populations” - meaning Black communities, LGBT people, and women. Through firearms training and advocacy, they hope to “take back the monopoly on gun ownership” from the right wing. I’ve interviewed them at an outreach event, and filmed with them at a shooting range as well as a first-aid training. At a public outreach event in a Washington D.C. park, the Socialist Rifle Association finds an audience for its message that there’s an arms race in this country whether you like it or not, and the right-wing is winning by a long shot.
Pretty scary when two groups with completely opposite beliefs start to arm themselves and preach about an arms race...

In the United States of America, we have a right to bear arms, but one could almost interpret this more as a civic duty - as the right to bear arms is clearly denoted in the grander context of maintaining a well regulated militia. Thus it is clearly stated in our social contract that we have at least the right, if not the duty, to organize ourselves into civilian military and/or police groups to ensure the safety of our communities. Most people, outside of cities, have and know how to use guns here. That's America, we've been that way for 100's of years - but typically the potential for extreme violence from just about anyone has a greater tendency to create peace order and stability than anything the police or institutions can achieve. At least that's my perspective based on experience.

It’s one of the only competitive events that we know of that are incredibly welcoming of all types of folks. This means lots of leftists of all stripes, as well as a wide range of other folks. No bigotry is the name of the game and strictly adhered to, at least while we were there.
