I agree it is the kind of campaign ad we need more of. Every criticism from the right is a badge of honour.

A new public opinion survey in Texas released on Wednesday suggests that Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke has increased his support and trails two-term Republican Gov. Greg Abbott by single digits.

O’Rourke, a former El Paso congressman who came close to ousting Sen. Ted Cruz in the 2018 Senate election before unsuccessfully running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, grabbed the support of 43% of registered voters in a Quinnipiac University poll.

Abbott, a former state attorney general who’s running for a third four-year term steering Texas, stood at 48% support.
...
The Quinnipiac poll indicated Abbott was up by double digits among men, with O’Rourke holding a similar lead among women. The governor led among White voters and those 35 and older, while O’Rourke was up among Black and Hispanic voters, and those 18-34, according to the survey.

Abbott's border policy cost the U.S. almost $9 billion in just 10 days

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's short-lived policy of requiring state troopers to conduct secondary inspections of trucks crossing into Texas from Mexico cost the United States almost $9 billion in just 10 days, Axios reported Tuesday.

The policy, which Abbott enacted on April 6, snarled truck traffic at the border and led to a protest by Mexican truckers that stopped trade at some major crossings. On April 15, Abbott ended the double inspections, for which he'd received withering criticism from both sides of the border and the aisle, after striking deals with the governors of the four Mexican states that border Texas.

Per Axios, Abbott implemented the policy "in response to the Biden administration's announcement that it would lift Title 42," a Trump-era public health policy that denied migrants entry into the United States.

An analysis by the Perryman Group showed that the U.S. lost an estimated $8.97 billion in GDP due to delays at the border, while Texas alone lost $4.23 billion.

Beto O'Rourke, the Democrat contesting Abbott's bid for a third term as governor, slammed Abbott for his costly gambit. "Abbott jacked up inflation, increased prices at our stores, hurt Texas businesses, killed jobs, and shut down billions of dollars in trade ... Abbott says this financial pain is necessary. I say electoral consequences are necessary," he tweeted Tuesday.

Recently, I read a tweet from Governor Greg Abbott: “I’ve asked the members of the Texas Restaurant Association, Texas Package Stores Association & all Texas retailers to voluntarily remove all Russian products from their shelves. Texas stands with Ukraine.”
...
I’ve spent the last four years fighting to preserve the right to boycott for all Texans; a right which, ironically, Abbott has been eroding. In 2017, Abbott signed into law House Bill 89, which prohibits state agencies (such as public school districts) from contracting with those who boycott Israel.

Our enemies are terrified of Cisneros:

On immigration, Blue Dog Cuellar and his opponent Cisneros are night and day. While Cuellar has been a high-profile advocate for action against the illegal aliens, drug traffickers and human smugglers pouring into his district, Cisneros is an actual  immigration attorney backed by the “Squad” who advocates for Open Borders

About her opponent:

In 2011, Cuellar was the author and one of two main co-sponsors of legislation seeking to honor slain ICE agent Jaime Zapata.

In 2014, Cuellar was the only House Democrat to vote for a bill that would have made it easier to deport unaccompanied minors to Central America.
...
Cuellar was one of three Democrats to vote for Kate's Law, which expands maximum sentences for immigrants who reenter the U.S. after being deported.[3] He supported legislation to strip federal funding for jurisdictions that have sanctuary policies in place.[3]

SAN ANTONIO ― Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) spoke in support of progressive House candidates Jessica Cisneros and Greg Casar in Texas on Saturday, using her star power to influence the first major intraparty contests of the midterm election cycle.
...
Ocasio-Cortez recounted how the years she spent as a community organizer in South Texas when she was in her late teens and early 20s convinced her that Democrats will eventually flip Texas. She argued that electing Cisneros and Casar, who are capable of exciting the state’s young and racially diverse electorate, could hasten that process.

“That’s why I’m here: for the long haul,” said Ocasio-Cortez, vowing to return. “I don’t care how many cycles it takes, it is going to happen.”

“Texas turning blue is inevitable!” she added. “It will happen. The only question is when, Texas!”
...
Like Ocasio-Cortez, Cisneros and Casar are part of a younger generation of progressive Latinos who are less patient with the incremental change preferred by many Democratic politicians elected during earlier eras. They both support “Medicare for All,” a Green New Deal, canceling student debt, and an expansive approach to immigrant rights.

Not sure what they are like on foreign policy, but anyway:

Texas might be a red state now, but the Lone Star State is turning blue right before our eyes
...
Republicans who hold all statewide offices and both U.S. Senate seats are now trying to slam the door shut, lock it and throw away the key. Through gerrymandering, they reduced the number of majority-Black and Latino congressional districts and split up Asian communities – significantly diluting political power for the Texans of color who have driven population growth.

There is, however, reason to be hopeful. Reason to keep organizing, knocking doors, making phone calls, sending texts and persuading Texans from every corner of the state to vote. Reason to act now, else risk losing generations of progress made in enfranchising Black and brown communities.
...
While Texas Democrats still face daunting historical odds – having not carried the state in a presidential election since 1976 or won statewide since 1994 – parallels can be drawn to Arizona, another border state where Republicans’ hold has eroded.

Before 2020, Arizona had voted Democratic only once in a presidential election since 1948 and Democrats had not occupied both U.S. Senate seats since 1952. These changes were catalyzed by a diversifying electorate similar to Texas and aggressive investment in organizing to reach young voters and voters of color.
...
Moreover, the stakes are too high to lose faith. Texas’ 40 electoral votes are on the table. To put the state’s seismic political weight into perspective, based on the current electoral map, Democrats could lose Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – and still take the White House if they won Texas.

America’s future is Texas. The state’s rapid diversification and leftward lurch in politics are emblematic of broader trends across the nation, which could end up looking like Texas sooner rather than later. The people in power, however, would rather not have you know that.

But the Texas I know is Black and brown, with more than 50% of the state’s population being Black, Latino or Asian.

The Texas I know is young, with nearly half of the state being younger than 35.

The Texas I know is worth fighting for.
