OPINION: Why are so many local leaders silent about antisemitic leaflets in Sarasota?
The silence is deafening.Why didn’t the headline in the Feb. 16 Sarasota Herald-Tribune read: “Area leaders decry antisemitic messages”? Instead it specified “area Jewish leaders.”
Faith leaders, community leaders, Black leaders, political leaders, neighborhood leaders and business leaders, where are you? Why have you remained silent?
I expect more of you. We, the Jewish community, expect more of you. We, the residents of Sarasota, expect more of you.
A debate between two candidates for Senate went awry on Monday, as one of them sparred with an audience member and insulted the other candidate's intelligence.The event saw Republican Josh Mandel face off against Democrat Morgan Harper. But it quickly devolved as Mandel, whose provocative campaigning style has already made headlines, began arguing with an attendee.As a debate moderator began asking Mandel, 44, about comments he had made calling Black Lives Matter supporters "thugs," an audience member began saying, "Mmhmm, put him out."That's when Mandel — currently leading the race for the Republican nomination, per one poll, with many undecided voters — turned to the audience member, saying, "What do you mean, 'Put him out?' As in, with a bullet?"
Mandel continued, gesturing with his hands, "I thought this was America where we could debate freely."
The audience member could then be heard telling the moderator not to "suck up" to Mandel, saying, "This is a Black community. He's calling my parents 'thugs.' "
Elsewhere in the debate, Mandel said of his rival Harper, 38: "She's like [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez], only dumber," an insult that elicited groans from the audience.
Amid his third run for Senate in Ohio, Mandel has courted controversy, raising eyebrows for comments made about refugees, support for alt-right personalities and incendiary tweets about immigrants. He has also supported the evidence-free claim the 2020 presidential election was fraudulent.
The chair of Columbia University’s psychiatry department has been suspended after posting a tweet earlier this week that many have called racist.The original tweet from Jeffrey Lieberman, MD, along with his entire Twitter account, have since been deleted — but not before members of #MedTwitter took screenshots that were reposted and shared. In the tweet, he retweeted another user who had posted about Sudanese model Nyakim Gatwech, describing her as “the most beautiful among the Black beauties.” Lieberman added his own version of a compliment to this, writing, “whether a work of art or freak of nature, she’s a beautiful sight to behold.”Healthcare professionals on #MedTwitter were quick to point out why his remark was not, in fact, a compliment at all.“Respectfully, this ‘compliment’ is problematic stated and reads as racist,” wrote Stella Safo, MD, MPH, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, in response. ...Lieberman formerly served as the president of the American Psychiatric Association.
