Speaking of the Switch:

Pretty awesome IMO! Also, NES and SNES games are already on the Switch btw. A good way for young people like me to get into Retro games. I used to play Nintendo games (still 3D), but I increasingly lost interest in video games during my teen years, as I felt they were becoming more and more Westernized.

EDIT: should probably move to "Counterculture" thread

The Pokemon games were my first formal introduction to 2D games. Playing them allowed me for the first time to experience the feeling of truly being immersed in the game world. I would later search for such experiences in games, but would be unable to find them as I thought the only way for games to achieve this was to be more "realistic", which led to me playing 3D open/world games. The anime was also really good as it glorified individualism and showed the Kampf of Satoshi/Ash, which seemed to mirror what the game was doing.

Unfortunately, looking back, the Pokemon series seems very non-Aryan in its theme, as it revolves around using the Pokemon as goys by capturing them, and breeding them. However, given that the Pokemon series itself was made in part by Creatures Inc. (formerly Ape Inc), the company behind the Mother series, which largely inspired the gameplay of Pokemon, it may be possible to experience the immersive experience sans the ignobility by playing that series instead. But alas, I have lost interest in video games completely by this point, given the depressing state of the world.

What do you guys think?

Mobile games are also a great way to experience 2D games:

Tal Tal Heights from Link's Awakening:

Chiptunes are incredible IMO. The ability to use limited resources to create amazing melodies is a talent.

"Westerners prefer more realistic art styles because it is more mature, and in their minds, only that which is more mature is more "serious"."

Recall over here:

https://trueleft.createaforum.com/issues/media-decolonization/msg4688/#msg4688

Quote
"Prince of Persia Trilogy"

I am happy to discuss Prince of Persia, however, as it is actually an example of what I was talking about:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_of_Persia_(1989_video_game)

Quote
Mechner used an animation technique called rotoscoping, with which he used footage to animate the characters' sprites and movements. To create the protagonist's platforming motions, Mechner traced video footage of his younger brother running and jumping in white clothes.[9] To create the game's sword fighting sprites, Mechner rotoscoped the final duel scene between Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone in the 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood.[8] Though the use of rotoscoping was regarded as a pioneering move, Mechner later recalled that "when we made that decision with Prince of Persia, I wasn't thinking about being cutting edge—we did it essentially because I'm not that good at drawing or animation, and it was the only way I could think of to get lifelike movement."[10]

This reinforces the thesis of my previous post. Even in 2D, Westerners were always trying to make sprite animation imitate realistic motion as closely as possible:

The excessive realism made controlling the character just plain irritating due to the lag between input and response. For example, when you press jump, the Prince doesn't jump right away, instead he begins his Realistic Jump Animation Sequence which consists of coiling up and then jumping and then uncoiling, during which you may have already changed your mind about what you want him to do but have to wait for him to finish the whole move before you can tell him to do something else. Therefore the whole game experience is of trying to send delayed instructions to the Prince, rather than ever being able to feel that you are the Prince.

Compare with non-Western sprite animation which thoroughly disregards realism:

yet result in far more player-friendly control (you instantly feel like you have become Mario) and hence ultimately far more captivating games.

For the record:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordan_Mechner

Quote
Mechner was born in New York City, into a family of European Jewish immigrants.

Here is another Western game animated in the same irritating Western realist style using rotoscoping:

which unsurprisingly won praise from the Western pro-realism reviewers (who simultaneously admitted that it actually sucks (see bold)):

Quote
Computer Gaming World approved of Flashback's "superbly rotoscoped graphics", "fluid movement", and sound card audio. While criticizing the awkward interface and use of save points, the magazine concluded that it "is an excellent game that truly creates a sense of reality".[23]
...
Nintendo Power praised the graphics, story and animation calling it "almost cinematic" while noting that the play control takes "some getting used to".[24]
...
In 1995, Total! placed the game 24th on their Top 100 SNES Games. The lauded the rotoscoped graphics saying at the time "the most realistic animation ever seen in a platformer."

Contrast with the incomparably superior non-Western style:

Should I stop playing games like The Sims and Tiny Life (which is like The Sims 1, but retro style)?

I also don't get the popularity of multiplayer games like Among Us. But it seems to be better than Minecraft or Roblox.

I've seen that the crowds of The Sims and Tiny Life tend to be the best, along with retro gamers.

I personally never liked The Sims. In general I avoid games with no ending. And the very notion of simulating real life is antithetical to what I expect from a game:

It’s as though the Western aim is to create within virtual space yet another material world as realistic as the real material world, whereas the non-Western aim is to use virtual space to help people momentarily forget the real material world in favour of a much simpler world.

rp also had a good post about this:

open-world games are Yahwist simulators.

It goes without saying that I infinitely prefer the non-Western approach to simulation games:

•The Metal Gear franchise (only the first two are 2D, sorry) do a good job of showing the dangers of advanced technology (AI, nanomachines, mechas, etc.) It also has deep philosophical/sociological/political overtones.

•I've already suggested this, but Undertale.

•The Coffee Talk games.

Indivisible.

VA-11 Hall-A.

...And more I will post soon.

Speaking of RPGs, has anyone here played the Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest series? How about the Mother series?

"Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection for Switch:"

Do not play any SF game outside of this collection!

I played SF1 casually, but it was SF2 which really drew me into the series:

which I continued to be a fan of until I saw SF4, which finally convinced me that it was not worthwhile to follow anymore. I was also a fan of FF, AoF and KoF (98 and earlier), so the last high point for me was probably the Capcom vs SNK series.

I would honestly have preferred if no more games with these characters were released after CvS2. At least that way I could have avoided having to see the characters jump the shark in the subsequent releases. I only want to remember them as they were at their best:

For anyone who can stomach modern video game graphics and open world gaming, I would highly recommend The Elder Scrolls VI: Oblivion. Could definitely be improved but the main storyline is excellent, and the game itself has a whimsical feel throughout.

The only 3D games I can stomach are Nintendo games, as they have still retained a degree of fictionality in their graphics. The ones with realistic graphics I find unbearable.

"The only 3D games I can stomach are Nintendo games,"

Yes! I especially love Mario games (been a fan since I was little), though by early Switch era, their path to realistic graphics have progressed:

It's like I'm not even playing a Mario game, for the love of Shennong.

Which is why (unlike what the Eurocentrist base game fans like to think) I sorta like that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Courses became a little less detailed in the 2020s:

Though Nintendo turned cowardly when they started to make their textures a little more realistic:

Base game fans would call BCP courses "too simple" but for my inner leftist perspective, it's not simple enough (which is why Mario Kart should shift back to Super Circuit graphics).
