It is probably a good thing that D&D ended before the Counterculture era ended. Had it tried to continue, it might have been pressured to adapt to subsequent trends. As it is, at least we can remember it as an untainted phenomenon marking the last few years before the collapse.



"Living with roommates"

I don't think this is a good comparison. Serious artists typically need a lot of privacy. Arranging for them to live together would lead to all kinds of extra trouble. Indeed this is why they need managers/agents/PAs/etc. to keep them from having to interact with the outside world more than is necessary.
