"I have written, as you said, Chairman Thompson, that today, almost two years after that fateful day in January 2021, that still, Donald Trump and his allies and supporters are a clear and present danger to American democracy. That's not because of what happened on January 6th. It's because, to this very day, the former President, his allies, and supporters pledge that in the presidential election of 2024, if the former president or his anointed successor as the Republican Party presidential candidate were to lose that election, that they would attempt to overturn that 2024 election in the same way that they attempted to overturn the 2020 election, but succeed in 2024 where they failed in 2020.

I don't speak those words lightly. I would have never spoken those words ever in my life, except that that's what the former president and his allies are telling us. As I said in that New York Times op-ed, wherein I was speaking about the Electoral Count Act of 1887, the former president and his allies are executing that blueprint for 2024 in open and plain view of the American public. I repeat, I would have never uttered one single one of those words, unless the former president and his allies were candidly and proudly speaking those exact words to America."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans in Texas formally rejected President Joe Biden's election in 2020 as illegitimate and voted in a state-wide convention that wrapped up this weekend on a party platform that calls homosexuality an "abnormal lifestyle choice."

"We reject the certified results of the 2020 presidential election, and we hold that acting President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was not legitimately elected by the people of the United States," the Texas party said in a resolution, passed in a voice vote at its convention.

Texas is a major player in U.S. national politics, with 38 electoral votes, the second highest after California. Voters there have backed Republican presidents for the past four decades.

Following a Jan. 6, 2021 speech to thousands of his supporters in Washington, former President Donald Trump angrily demanded that his staff take him to the U.S. Capitol to press his efforts to block the certification of his election loss to Joe Biden, a former White House aide testified Tuesday.

as the president had gotten into the vehicle with Bobby, he thought that they were going up to the Capitol, and when Bobby had relayed to him that 'We're not, we don't have the assets to do it. It's not secure. We're going back to the West Wing,' the president had [a] very strong, very angry response to that. Tony described him as being irate. The president said something to the effect of 'I'm the effing president. Take me up to the Capitol now!' To which Bobby responded, 'Sir, we have to go back to the West Wing.'"

Earlier in her testimony, Hutchinson described how White House lawyers had refused to sign off on a plan for Trump to travel "off-the-record," and drive from the rally to the Capitol, saying that this departure from the president's official schedule would result in them getting "charged with every crime imaginable.”

Trump, however, was undeterred, and escalated the situation inside the limousine, Hutchinson testified.

"The president reached up to the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel. Mr. Engel grabbed his arm, said, 'Sir, you need to take your hand off the steering wheel. We're going back to the West Wing. We're not going to the Capitol.' Mr. Trump then used his free hand to lunge toward Bobby Engel, and when Mr. Ornato had recounted this story to me, he motioned to his clavicles."

Engel, who had been listening to Ornato's retelling of events, did not correct any part of the account, Hutchinson said.

Trump was furious the Secret Service was screening people at his rally for weapons.

"They're not here to hurt me. Take the F'ing mags away. Let my people in. They can march to the Capitol from here."

According to the latest round of polling, even as more and more (non-Republican) Americans turn firmly against Donald Trump, most Republicans still pick him as their favorite for 2024. Donald Trump and his allies are on edge as his former White House counsel Pat Cipollone testifies before the Jan. 6 committee. Cipollone reportedly told former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson that “we’re going to get charged with every crime imaginable” for Trump’s Jan. 6 plot.
